Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Middlesex County, Massachusetts This catalogue has been a natural outgrowth of the incorporation of the Middlesex Institute in 1881. The results of numerous excursions in the vicinity of Malden encouraged wider research, leading to the exploration of the entire county, with publication in view. Works known to contain lists of county plants have been carefully examined, among which are Bigelow's "Florula Bostoniensis;" Hitchcock's "Report on the Geology, etc., of Mass.;" Emerson's "Trees and Shrubs of Mass.;" a "List of Plants in Malden and Medford;" the "Catalogue of the Davenport Herbarium;" "A partial list of the native flora of Waltham;" a "List of introduced plants found in the vicinity of a wool-scouring establishment" in North Chelmsford, by Rev. W. P. Alcott; and miscellaneous papers in the "Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History," Hovey's Magazine, and other publications. The verification of these lists has been no light task. Where 110 specimen exists, where it has been impossible to find the original authority upon which a plant outside its recognized limits has been reported, or where there is a strong probability of wrong determination, the authors have excluded such names from the catalogue, thinking it better to lose several species which may be in the county than admit one which would be justly open to criticism. Various public and private collections have been examined for rare species; while holidays and vacations have been for six years largely devoted to botanical expeditions which have embraced within their scope, though very imperfectly, every section of Middlesex. Download or read book The Flora of Essex County Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by John Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flora of Essex County, Massachusetts The following enumeration of the plants of Essex County has been prepared, after a careful examination of the work of the earlier botanists and diligent search in almost every portion of the county for species not previously noticed. With so few persons devoting themselves to the study of botany or the collection of specimens, particularly of the lower orders of plants, it would be impossible to present an absolutely complete list, and perhaps with even the greatest facilities no one has succeeded in so doing for any region. Almost the only extended collection of dried specimens of county plants were those of the late Mr. Oakes, so that there really exists no very great foundation upon which to build other than the herbarium recently collected, and the writings of the more reliable among the earlier botanists, who for nearly a century have now and then appeared upon the scene. Book A Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Worcester County Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Worcester County Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Joseph Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Worcester County, Massachusetts IN 1883 I prepared for publication the first Catalogue of the Plants of Worcester County, Massachusetts, containing eight hundred and twelve species and well-marked varieties. In 1894 the second edition, enlarged to ten hundred and ninety-eight species, was issued. In the meantime, by the kind and generous help of many friends, all of whom will understand, I hope, that whether their names appear in these pages or not, my sense of obligation to them is here fully acknowledged and gratefully remembered, more than a bun dred additions have been made. The arrangement and the nomenclature are those of Gray's New Manual of Botany, Seventh Edition, 1908, the book most likely to be used by all persons interested in the study of the local flora here given. In the hope that they may add some interest to certain plants in the catalogue, I have inserted references to a few plants, made by writers of recognized standing in American and English literature. I have not included writers like Thoreau in this country and Jefferies in England, whose writings abound in such references, on the ground that their works are more or less well known to all persons interested in wild flowers found in their respective countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Flora of "Oak Island," Revere, Massachusetts: With Notes Oak island, or Chelsea Beach Island, as it was called before North Chelsea was rechristened Revere, is a Slight elevation of land, covered with trees, hardly reaching more than three or four feet above the surround in'g saltmarsh, within the limits of the town of Revere, Massachusetts, and just a few rods beyond the inlet which separates that town from the town of Saugus in Essex County. The island begins at about 800 feet back from what is now called Revere beach, with a strip of land running north and south feet, having a breadth of 100 feet which is connected with the larger portion of the island which runs east and west some feet, and has a breadth of 800 feet. This latter portion is divided into two unequal parts by the Eastern Railway which runs through it north and south. The Salem and Boston turn pike road runs by the island to the west at a distance of about a quarter of a mile. Formerly this station was only accessible to pedestrians and to the salt hay teams by a rough road from the beach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of Plants Growing Without Cultivation in Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden Counties, Massachusetts Society and, in addition, we have consulted the herbaria of Mt. Hol yoke and Amherst Colleges, and the Knowlton herbarium of the Massachusetts Agricultural College. The mosses, liverworts, lichens, fungi and Characeae have been purposely omitted from this list. The list of lichens in Prof. Tuckerman's catalogue is one of the most complete and authentic published, but the list of fungi, Characeae, etc., contributed by Mr. Frost is of little value as it stands today, since much progress has been made in the study of these groups since his time.
