Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydraulics of the Miami Flood Control Project As a result of rainfall almost unprecedented for this region all portions of southern Indiana and Ohio, together with adjacent areas in surrounding states, suffered from phenomenal floods on March 25, 1913. In the Miami Valley this flood submerged much of the resi dence portion and the greater part of the business and manufacturing area of the cities of Piqua, Troy, Dayton, Franklin, Miamisburg, and Hamilton. The considerable loss of life and the immense damage to property immediately raised the question whether it would be feasible to take steps to prevent any possible'recurrence of such a disaster, and the difierent interested communities gradually drew together to seek relief. Download or read book Relief from Floods Vol 1 written by John W. Alvord and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relief From Floods, Vol. 1: The Fundamental of Flood Prevention, Flood Protection and the Means for Determination Proper Remedies Although great floods are constantly occurring in vari ous parts Of the country, they happen infrequently in the same locality. They come unexpectedly, and as they pass, they leave the community with the desire for better con ditions but with considerable bewilderment as to how they shall be secured. There is a lack of appreciation of the prob lem and an absence of knowledge, even among some engi nears, as to what shall be done to determine proper measures for relief, to ascertain what fundamental data is reason ably required, and to determine what investigations and studies must be made before the proper remedy can be selected. Everyone wants to see the dirt fly. It is the tendency to be intolerant of the time spent in investi gation, and yet nothing good can be accomplished without a proper amount Of such preliminary work. Some phases Of this matter have received much thought in the past, but it is only recently that the number Of problems care fully studied has been great enough to warrant a clear-cut outline Of the field, and to demonstrate that nearly every remedy has its specific place. Book The Passaic Flood of 1903 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Passaic Flood of 1903 Classic Reprint written by Marshall Ora Leighton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passaic Flood of 1903 The Passaic Basin is fairly well supplied with storage facilities, which, under ordinary circumstances, would temper the severity of floods by holding back a large amount of water. In this case no such effect was produced, as the reservoirs, lakes, and ponds on the drain age area were filled, or practically se, at the beginning of the storm, and there was consequently no available space in which to hold back even an appreciable part of the run-otf water. Over some of the dams in the highland region a comparatively small amount of water was being discharged at the beginning of the storm. Therefore, while these storage basins may have hada certain deterring effect upon the rate of flood accumulation, they could not, in the end, assist materially in preventing damages in the lower part of the drainage area. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Floods and Levees of the Mississippi River I have undertaken to collate such data, and set out in orderly sequence such related incidents as are thought necessary to a proper understanding of the problem to be solved. The platforms of all three of the great political parties in 1912, distinctly, specifi cally and emphatically declared that the control of the floods of the Mississippi River was a national problem, and the Democratic party went so far as to declare that this problem imposes an obli gation which alone can be discharged by the General Government. In accepting the nomination of the Baltimore Convention, Mr. Wil son said: In the case of the Mississippi River, that great central artery of our trade, it is plain that the Federal Government must build and maintain the levees and keep the great waters in harness fur the general use. Book Notes on Justification of Flood Control Proposals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Justification of Flood Control Proposals Classic Reprint written by U. S. Soil Conservation Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Justification of Flood Control Proposals The institution of an extensive program of flood control and the proposal of a large number of specific pro jects has focused attention upon the question of the economic justification of flood control expenditures. Widespread agree ment has'been reached upon the proposition that justification must derive from the excess of benefits over costs. To date, however, there has been.no agreement upon.and insufficient con sideration of the nature of either benefits or costs, the methods and techniques of their estimation, and their precise significance. The formula of weighing benefits against costs is simple, but the definitions of what constitute benefits and what constitute costs are exceedingly complex. A variety of concepts and practices are current; consideration of their implications and the development of a sound and uniform.method of estimating the economic justification of flood control projects is imperative if a rational and effective national flood control program is to be launched. Book Floodplain Management and Flood Control

Download or read book Floodplain Management and Flood Control written by United States Congress and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Floodplain Management and Flood Control: Hearings Before the Committee on Environment and Public Works, United States Senate, One Hundred Third Congress, Second Session; May 26 and July 20, 1994 Senator bond. This is the report that just came out today. This is the report by General Galloway to the Interagency Flood Plain Management Task Force, and I assume this is the full text of the remarks he's going to give today. In there, he said, The Midwest flood of 1993 was a hydrometeorological event unprecedented in re cent times, which is a nice way of saying it was a heck of a flood. It was excessive rainfall that occurred throughout a significant sec tion of the upper Mississippi River Basin, and he said it was an occurrence of 500-year flooding on the segment of the Mississippi south from Burlington, IA to St. Louis, mo. I would say much of the damage in our State was along the Mis souri River. These pictures here are Missouri River flooding. The Midwesterners fought the battle. They fought as the river rose, they maintained the levees, the water went down, but it came back up, and that's when disaster struck.
