Book Flood Warning Systems Manual

Download or read book Flood Warning Systems Manual written by Paulina Broderick and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-03 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a holistic and integrated method to assess and design effective flood warning systems. Aptly named the 'Total Flood Warning System' (TFWS) approach, it has been used by the author for several communities, particularly in the state of Victoria, Australia. However, although I draw mainly from my Australian TFWS experience for this book, the TFWS approach could be used to effectively warn any flood-prone community throughout the world.

Book Flood Early Warning Systems

Download or read book Flood Early Warning Systems written by Daniela Molinari and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the results of an ambitious research activity this book intends to understand why Early Warning Systems (EWSs) fail. However, from the beginning, the objective turned out to be challenging; first, because, so far, there is not a shared understanding of what an EWS is (among both researchers and practitioners communities); second, as a consequence, because it is equally unclear when an EWS can be considered successful or not. Due to this, the research needed first to face some “open questions” instead of going straight to the point under investigation. Specifically, it was first necessary to define EWS, identify its components and functions, peculiarities, and weak points. Only at that point, a first attempt to evaluate EWS performance was possible. Flood Early Warning Systems Performance is organised according to the conceptual steps required by the research. In part I the “open questions” about the definition and the role of EWSs are handled, the aim being the identification of how to evaluate their effectiveness/performance. Part II focuses on the real aim of the research, providing concepts and tools to assess EWS performance; suggested tools are also implemented in a case study to describe how they can be applied in practice. Focusing specifically on the topic of flood risk in mountainous regions, the book can be viewed as a sort of manual for EWS designers, managers, and users. It is organised into different independent sections which will appeal both to experts as well as those with an interest in the subject. Most of results can also be exported to other hazards.

Book excerpt: This open access book brings together research studies, developments, and application-related flash flood topics on wadi systems in arid regions. The major merit of this comprehensive book is its focus on research and technical papers as well as case study applications in different regions worldwide that cover many topics and answer several scientific questions. The book chapters comprehensively and significantly highlight different scientific research disciplines related to wadi flash floods, including climatology, hydrological models, new monitoring techniques, remote sensing techniques, field investigations, international collaboration projects, risk assessment and mitigation, sedimentation and sediment transport, and groundwater quality and quantity assessment and management. In this book, the contributing authors (engineers, researchers, and professionals) introduce their recent scientific findings to develop suitable, applicable, and innovative tools for forecasting, mitigation, and water management as well as society development under seven main research themes as follows: Part 1. Wadi Flash Flood Challenges and Strategies Part 2. Hydrometeorology and Climate Changes Part 3. Rainfall–Runoff Modeling and Approaches Part 4. Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Part 5. Reservoir Sedimentation and Sediment Yield Part 6. Groundwater Management Part 7. Application and Case Studies The book includes selected high-quality papers from five series of the International Symposium on Flash Floods in Wadi Systems (ISFF) that were held in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020 in Japan, Egypt, Oman, Morocco, and Japan, respectively. These collections of chapters could provide valuable guidance and scientific content not only for academics, researchers, and students but also for decision-makers in the MENA region and worldwide.

Book Flood Warning

Download or read book Flood Warning written by C. L. Keys and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In describing a set of best practices to guide flood warning in Australia, the manual focuses on tasks rather than on the inter-organisational arrangements within which they must be carried out, since the latter vary considerably between the various states and territories. The tasks, however, are the same within each jurisdiction. In terms of flood context the primary focus is riverine flooding, rather than localised f︣lash ̉flooding from thunderstorms or surcharging drains, or flooding from oceans as a result of storm surge or tsunami conditions. Nevertheless many of the principles which the manual espouses are applicable to the development of warning systems and procedures for a wide range of hazards. The manual is structured as follows. Each chapter begins with a number of questions and answers which summarise the chapters̉ content in a nutshell. The details are then spelled out, and each subsection within a chapter is summarised in an italicised paragraph"--Page 1.
