Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are hundreds of ancient flood legends around the world that tells of vast inundations in ancient times caused by catastrophic events. It's often assumed that these legends refer to the flood of Noah and his ark. Although many do mirror this biblical story, some people say these legends simply refer to local floods that only affected the world of the locals, not the whole globe. There are three types of flood legends: global, local, and a confusion of global mixed with local floods. We sorted these legends into categories, presented the evidences, and exhibited the causes of each type. From this discussion emerges a frightful picture of the ancient world where civilizations were affected time and time again by vastly destructive cataclysmic events. The world changed—mountains rose, continents shifted, cities and islands sunk, species were obliterated, and whole populations were wiped off the face of the earth. Legends regularly validate others as true histories. If the floods they spoke of were not global, their effect was. This roller coaster ride of evidence will challenge the worldview of ancient and geologic history that have been taught to us. Legends of the floods often mentioned God or the gods, which were considered to be either responsible for the floods or saved people from them. The age when the gods ruled is associated with advanced technology and flood legends. Atlantis is considered central in flood legends, and many researchers have incorrectly linked its destruction with all flood legends. The gods, too, are related to Atlantis and are frequently tied with floods, which necessitated a section devoted to the age of the gods wherein we discover their origins and who they are.

Book The Flood Myths of Early China

Download or read book The Flood Myths of Early China written by Mark Edward Lewis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Chinese ideas about the construction of an ordered human space received narrative form in a set of stories dealing with the rescue of the world and its inhabitants from a universal flood. This book demonstrates how early Chinese stories of the re-creation of the world from a watery chaos provided principles underlying such fundamental units as the state, lineage, the married couple, and even the human body. These myths also supplied a charter for the major political and social institutions of Warring States (481–221 BC) and early imperial (220 BC–AD 220) China. In some versions of the tales, the flood was triggered by rebellion, while other versions linked the taming of the flood with the creation of the institution of a lineage, and still others linked the taming to the process in which the divided principles of the masculine and the feminine were joined in the married couple to produce an ordered household. While availing themselves of earlier stories and of central religious rituals of the period, these myths transformed earlier divinities or animal spirits into rulers or ministers and provided both etiologies and legitimation for the emerging political and social institutions that culminated in the creation of a unitary empire.

Book The Great Flood and Other Myths and Legends of the Old Testament Creation of Man the Fall of Man the Mark of Cain the Great Flood the Tower of Ba

Download or read book The Great Flood and Other Myths and Legends of the Old Testament Creation of Man the Fall of Man the Mark of Cain the Great Flood the Tower of Ba written by James G. Frazer and published by . This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Can We Really Believe About Scripture? BIBLICAL STORIES - TRUTH? OR FICTION? Here is Unequivocal Proof That "Noah's Flood" Actually Occurred and That The Fall of the Tower of Babel Did Cause Chaos, Mass Hysteria and the Confusion of Multiple Tongues to Prevail Among Humankind. Hundreds of Biblical accounts accepted as gospel by "true believers" have come under continued attack by the secular community to the point where it is difficult to sort out the factual nature of God's works. One researcher, James George Frazer, spent a good part of his life scoffing at the "Christian World" only to accumulate records from all over the planet which showed the universality of Creation, the Great Flood, and Man's Fall from Grace, as well as the collapse of the Tower of Babel. GLOBAL ACCOUNTS OF A 'GREAT FLOOD' PREVAIL In a lengthy presentation Frazer presents astounding evidence that a global flood has left the strongest single historical imprint upon all of humanity, no matter where on the globe folks had later moved to and settled. Skeptics have proclaimed that the Flood of Noah was merely "regional in scope," even though the Bible makes it clear: (Genesis 7:19b) ..".all the high hills that (were) under the whole heaven, were covered." In fact, "amongst 120 different tribes in North and South and Central America, not one tribe exists that has not related distinct or vague traditions of such a calamity, in which one, or three, or eight persons were saved above the waters..." Furthermore, here are many great tales, including: The Hebrew Story of the Flood; Ancient Great Stories of the Rising Tide of Doom; Supposed Persian Stories; Stories of a Great Flood in Eastern Asia; Stories From Australia, New Guinea, Melanesia, Polynesia and all of the Americas. Believe it or not the flood really occurred and it covered the globe! EXPLORE THE CREATION OF MAN Do the various stories told by many cultures vary or do they agree at all on the creation? Were humans molded out of red clay? What is the truth about the creation of woman out of man's rib? THE TOWER OF BABEL Here are the "stories" told by many societies, including the Cholula in Mexico; the Toltecs, the origin of the diversity of tongues in Greece, Africa, Assam, Australia and America. There are even Jewish legends as to the Tower of Babel. Theories are many as to the primitive language of humankind and several experimental attempts have been made to determine if there is one source for primitive language. Far from being omitted are other "myths and legends" of Biblical proportions including the Mark of Cain, fear of ghosts of the murdered, a motive for executing murderers, bodily marks to protect people against ghosts of the slain. There is also discussion of the serpent in the Garden and the deception of woman by the serpent and the immortality of serpents and the story of the origin of death. ORDER NOW: If you are a student of the Bible or wish to know the links between the many great Scriptural stories that have been handed down by all means send for THE GREAT FLOOD AND OTHER MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. Book Water and fire

  • Author : Daniel Anlezark

Download or read book Water and fire written by Daniel Anlezark and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noah’s Flood is one of the Bible’s most popular stories, and flood myths survive in many cultures today. This book presents the first comprehensive examination of the incorporation of the Flood myth into the Anglo-Saxon imagination. Focusing on literary representations, it contributes to our understanding of how Christian Anglo-Saxons perceived their place in the cosmos. For them, history unfolded between the primeval Deluge and a future – perhaps imminent – flood of fire, which would destroy the world. This study reveals both an imaginative diversity and shared interpretations of the Flood myth. Anglo-Saxons saw the Flood as a climactic event in God’s ongoing war with his more rebellious creatures, but they also perceived the mystery of redemption through baptism. Anlezark studies a range of texts against their historical background, and discusses shifting emphases in the way the Flood was interpreted for diverse audiences. The book concludes with a discussion of Beowulf, relating the epic poem’s presentation of the Flood myth to that of other Anglo-Saxon texts.

Book When the Great Abyss Opened

Download or read book When the Great Abyss Opened written by J. David Pleins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Noah's flood is one of the best-loved and most often retold biblical tales, the inspiration for numerous children's books and toys, novels, and even films. Whether as allusion, archetype, or literal presence--the American landscape is peppered with "recreations" of the ark--the story of Noah's animals and the ark resonates throughout American culture and the world. While most think of Noah's ark as a dramatic myth, others are consumed by the quest for geological and archeological proof that the flood really occurred. Persistent rumors of a large vessel on the mountain of Ararat in Turkey, for instance, have led many pilgrims and explorers over the centuries to visit that fabled peak. Recent finds suggest that there may have been a catastrophic flood on the shores of the Black Sea some 7,600 years ago. Is this then the reality behind the ancient tale of Noah? More to the point, why does it matter? What does the story of the Flood mean to us and why does it so stir the collective imagination? When the Great Abyss Opened examines the history of our attempts to understand the Flood, from medieval Jewish and Christian speculation about the physical details of the ark to contemporary efforts to link it to scientific findings. Unraveling the mythical dimensions of the parallel Mesopotamian flood stories and their deeper social and psychological significance, J. David Pleins also considers the story's positive uses in theology and moral instruction. Noah's tale, however, has also been invoked as a means of justifying exclusion, racism, and anti-homosexual views. Pro-slavery advocates, for example, used the story of Noah's Curse on Ham's son Canaan to rationalize the enslavement of Africans.Throughout this expansive and lively book, Pleins sheds new light on our continuing attempts to understand this ancient primal myth. Noah's Flood, he contends, offers a unique case study that illuminates the timeless and timely question of how fact and faith relate.

Download or read book Echoes of Ararat written by Nick Liguori and published by Master Books. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 300 Flood traditions from all over North and South America are included, organized by regions beginning in Canada and proceeding southward. In Echoes of Ararat, author Nick Liguori contends that oral traditions of the Flood-and the survival of the few inside the floating Ark-are even more prevalent than previously thought, and they powerfully confirm the truth of the Genesis account. This unprecedented work carefully documents hundreds of native traditions of the Flood-as well as the Tower of Babel and the Garden of Eden-from the tribes of North and South America. Learn what the Cherokee, Lakota, Iroquois, Cheyenne, Inuit, Inca, Aztec, Guaraní, and countless other tribes claimed about the early history of the world. Liguori also shares many evidences for the historical reliability of Genesis, and shows that the Genesis Flood account is not dependent on the Epic of Gilgamesh or other Near-Eastern texts, as skeptics claim. Rather, its author Moses had access to ancient records passed down by the early Patriarchs, including Joseph, Jacob, Abraham, and even Noah himself.
