Pete and Paul yelled together. 'Bandit! Nine o'clock! Bandit!' Jack spun to stare. There was the Messerschmitt on their left, streaking straight at them. Eighteen-year-old Jack wanted to escape boring little New Zealand. But he soon finds that flying in a Lancaster bomber to attack Hitler’s forces brings terror as well as excitement. With every dangerous mission, he becomes more afraid that he’ll never get back alive. He wants to help win the war, but will he lose his own life? My Brother’s War: '... there are stories that need to be told over and over again, to introduce a new generation of readers to important ideas and to critical times in their country's history ... Download or read book The Duel written by Tariq Ali and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world, the only Islamic state to have nuclear weapons, under military dictatorship for 33 of its 50 years in existence. Its 1000-mile border with Afghanistan is the likely hideout of Osama bin Laden--yet it is the linchpin in the United States' war on terror. With increasingly bold attacks by Taliban supporters in the border regions threatening to split the Pakistan army, with the only political alternatives as corrupt as the regime they seek to replace, and with a newly radicalized movement of lawyers testing its strength as champions of the rule of law, the chances of sustained stability in Pakistan look slim. Tariq Ali, long acknowledged as a leading commentator on Pakistan, combines deep understanding of the country with extensive firsthand research and unsparing political judgment to weigh the prospects of those contending for power today.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: There is always a before and an after… Sophie and Miles have a long marriage, twin daughters, a close-knit circle of friends and a happy home, until an accusation of inappropriate sexual conduct with a pupil blows everything apart. Sophie knows Miles as her husband of thirty years, the father to their twins and a dedicated teacher. Could he really be a sexual abuser? As the trial approaches, Sophie must ask herself if Miles is merely a bumbling innocent or a scheming manipulator. Flight Path explores the effect that an accusation of sexual assault has on a family. Guilty or Innocent, nobody wins. “It’s rare to read a novel that is as gripping as it is subtle. Flight Path is that novel. Buried within the story of a marriage coming undone is a compelling exploration of our moral and sexual confusions – and of one of our worst fears: that of the predator. E. J. Pepper delivers a disquieting, absorbing story. Throughout, she reveals our human frailties and bonds with delicacy and power.” Alison MacLeod, Booker prize long-listed author of Unexploded

Book Airborne Wind Energy

Download or read book Airborne Wind Energy written by Roland Schmehl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides in-depth coverage of the latest research and development activities concerning innovative wind energy technologies intended to replace fossil fuels on an economical basis. A characteristic feature of the various conversion concepts discussed is the use of tethered flying devices to substantially reduce the material consumption per installed unit and to access wind energy at higher altitudes, where the wind is more consistent. The introductory chapter describes the emergence and economic dimension of airborne wind energy. Focusing on “Fundamentals, Modeling & Simulation”, Part I includes six contributions that describe quasi-steady as well as dynamic models and simulations of airborne wind energy systems or individual components. Shifting the spotlight to “Control, Optimization & Flight State Measurement”, Part II combines one chapter on measurement techniques with five chapters on control of kite and ground stations, and two chapters on optimization. Part III on “Concept Design & Analysis” includes three chapters that present and analyze novel harvesting concepts as well as two chapters on system component design. Part IV, which centers on “Implemented Concepts”, presents five chapters on established system concepts and one chapter about a subsystem for automatic launching and landing of kites. In closing, Part V focuses with four chapters on “Technology Deployment” related to market and financing strategies, as well as on regulation and the environment. The book builds on the success of the first volume “Airborne Wind Energy” (Springer, 2013), and offers a self-contained reference guide for researchers, scientists, professionals and students. The respective chapters were contributed by a broad variety of authors: academics, practicing engineers and inventors, all of whom are experts in their respective fields.

Book Trajectory Control for Vehicles Entering the Earth s Atmosphere at Small Flight path Angles

Download or read book Trajectory Control for Vehicles Entering the Earth s Atmosphere at Small Flight path Angles written by John M. Eggleston and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of controlling the trajectories of high-drag--low-lift vehicles entering the earth's atmosphere at angles of attack near 90° and at initial entry angles up to --3° are studied. The trajectories are calculated for vehicles whose angle of attack can be held constant at some specified value or can be perfectly controlled as a function of some measured quantity along the trajectory. The results might be applied in the design of automatic control systems or in the design of instruments which will give the human pilot sufficient information to control his trajectory properly during an atmospheric entry. Trajectory data are compared on the basis of the deceleration, range, angle of attack, and, in some cases, the rate of descent. The aerodynamic heat-transfer rate and skin temperature of a vehicle with a simple heat-sink type of structure are calculated for trajectories made with several types of control functions.

Book A Computer Called Katherine

Download or read book A Computer Called Katherine written by Suzanne Slade and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of mathematician Katherine Johnson--made famous by the award-winning film Hidden Figures--who counted and computed her way to NASA and helped put a man on the moon! Katherine knew it was wrong that African Americans didn't have the same rights as others--as wrong as 5+5=12. She knew it was wrong that people thought women could only be teachers or nurses--as wrong as 10-5=3. And she proved everyone wrong by zooming ahead of her classmates, starting college at fifteen, and eventually joining NASA, where her calculations helped pioneer America's first manned flight into space, its first manned orbit of Earth, and the world's first trip to the moon! Award-winning author Suzanne Slade and debut artist Veronica Miller Jamison tell the story of a NASA "computer" in this smartly written, charmingly illustrated biography.

Book Bayesian Methods in the Search for MH370

Download or read book Bayesian Methods in the Search for MH370 written by Sam Davey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how nonlinear/non-Gaussian Bayesian time series estimation methods were used to produce a probability distribution of potential MH370 flight paths. It provides details of how the probabilistic models of aircraft flight dynamics, satellite communication system measurements, environmental effects and radar data were constructed and calibrated. The probability distribution was used to define the search zone in the southern Indian Ocean. The book describes particle-filter based numerical calculation of the aircraft flight-path probability distribution and validates the method using data from several of the involved aircraft’s previous flights. Finally it is shown how the Reunion Island flaperon debris find affects the search probability distribution.

Book Flight Path Characteristics for Decelerating from Supercircular Speeds

Download or read book Flight Path Characteristics for Decelerating from Supercircular Speeds written by Roger W. Luidens and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristics of six types of flight paths for the deceleration from circular and supercircular speeds are developed in closed form. The heating rate, heat input per square foot obtained from an integration over the flight path, the total heat vehicle, and the flight-path histories in terms of path angle, altitude, life coefficient, net acceleration, angle of attack and Reynolds number are discussed as a function of type of flight plan, initial net accelertion, and initial velocity. A flight plan with essentially a point landing capability is suggested. (Author).
