Download or read book Flight Evaluation of Various Short Period Dynamics at Four Drag Configurations for the Landing Approach Task written by Charles Ray Chalk and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The T-33 variable stability and variable drag airplane was used in a flight program to evaluate various longitudinal short period characteristics at each of four drag configurations for the landing approach task. Pilot rating and comment data were collected and used to determine short period requirements for the landing approach task. The importance of the slope of the thrust required vs. velocity curve is discussed and related to pilot comments and control difficulties. The longitudinal control gain selected by the pilot was a function of short period frequency and damping ratio. Curves relating control authority and short period frequency and damping ratio are derived from these data. The power spectral density of the pilot's elevator stick motion was found to be significantly affected by short period dynamics and atmospheric turbulence.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal handling qualities in the landing approach are studied. The T-33 variable stability and variable drag airplane was used in a flight program to evaluate various short period dynamics, phugoid dynamics, drag characteristics and elevator control authority levels. The first phase of the flight program was directed mainly at longitudinal short period dynamics, drag variation with angle of attack and elevator control authority. The second phase of the flight program was directed at phugoid dynamics, short period frequency, elevator control authority and drag characteristics. Drag variations with angle of attack, airspeed and elevator deflection were considered. Pilot ratings and comments are related to the airplane characteristics tests.

Download or read book In flight Investigation of the Effects of Higher order Control System Dynamics on Longitudinal Handling Qualities written by Dante A. Di Franco and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a flight test program to investigate the effects of higher-order control system dynamics on the handling qualities of a fighter airplane are presented and discussed. This research was undertaken using the variable stability T-33 airplane as an in-flight simulator. This in-flight investigation was based on a similar fixed-base ground simulator program. Higher-order response characteristics were obtained by altering the elevator stick feel system dynamics and elevator actuator dynamics in conjunction with four different sets of longitudinal short period airplane dynamics. In the investigation, the dynamics of any of the three elements (feel system, actuator, and airplane) could be changed independently of the others. Three of the set of four airplane characteristics were investigated as a fighter in 'up-and-away' flight, and the fourth was evaluated as a fighter during landing approach. Thirty-two different configurations were evaluated by one evaluation pilot (Pilot B) and 35 configurations were evaluated by a second evaluation pilot (Pilot H). Essentially the same configurations were evaluated by both pilots and rated using a new pilot rating scale. Pilot H also rated the configurations for their pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) tendencies using a PIO rating scale. Pilot comments were recorded in flight and the comments and ratings were related to various handling qualities parameters and response characteristics of the configurations. (Author).
