Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plane bucked sideways, flinging Darryl against the cabin wall. It plunged vertically, jolted so hard that his teeth clacked together, then started skidding downwards through the sky. The screams rose to a frenzy. Then Darryl felt the aircraft turning, swinging towards the right. They were heading towards Mururoa. And towards the nuclear bomb waiting there. The bomb due to explode in fifty-seven minutes. It's 1974, and a dark, cold New Zealand winter. So when Darryl's mum announces she is going to the remote Pacific island of Mangareva for work, and she's taking him with her, he is thrilled. But even as Darryl soaks up the warmth and peaceful beauty of French Polynesia, his holiday is darkened by violent anti-nuclear protests. Plus there's Alicia, with her furious outbursts against all Pacific nuclear tests. Darryl knows she's talking rubbish. What he doesn't know is that when he boards Flight 766 to fly home, his life and the lives of others will be changed forever. Also available as an eBook

Download or read book Cold War Delta Prototypes written by Tony Buttler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-24 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the supersonic jet age, aircraft designers were forced to devise radical new planforms that suited the new power of the jet engine. One of the most successful was the delta wing. Although Gloster produced the delta wing Javelin, and Boulton Paul –its P.111 research aircraft – Fairey and Avro were the champions of the delta in Britain. Meanwhile in America, with the exception of Douglas's Navy jet fighter programmes, Convair largely had the delta wing to itself. These development lines, one on each side of the Atlantic, had essentially the same objective – to produce high-speed fighter aircraft. In Britain, the Fairey Delta 2 went on to break the World Air Speed Record in spectacular fashion, but it failed to win a production order. In contrast Convair received major orders for two jet fighter types and one jet bomber. At the same time, the British Avro company built the 707 family of research aircraft, which led to the famous Vulcan, to show how the delta wing could be adopted for a highly successful subsonic bomber. This book examines the development of the delta wing in Britain and America, and the way in which experimental aircraft like the Fairey Deltas proved their potential and versatility. In Britain it covers the Fairey Delta 1 and Fairey Delta 2, the proposed Fairey Delta Rocket Fighter and huge Delta 3 long range interceptor, and the Avro 707. On the American side, it examines the Convair XF-92 and XF-92A, the development of the Delta Dagger/Delta Dart family, and the Convair Sea Dart – the world's only supersonic seaplane.

Download or read book Pilot s Guide to ATC written by David Harrison and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical explanation to pilots of how and why ATC procedures, working methods and RT phraseology is used. Aimed at pilots from trainees through to experienced professionals it is written in a very practical sense with a view on the real world with real people. As such, it is not a lecture-like reproduction of the rules, but explains the meanings and reasons for ATC procedures, clearances and phraseology. The intention is that it will give pilots a better understanding of the environment they are operating in, improve airmanship, improve pilot-controller understanding and consequently improve safety by giving pilots an understanding of how and why ATC use certain methods and phraseology. The author is an ex-air traffic controller, now a commercial pilot, and so is in the ideal position to explain what pilots are not taught about ATC including the ATC related issues that are useful and, in some cases, necessary for pilots to know. Real life examples and questions from fellow pilots are used to explain the subjects in a practical method. Consequently many examples are given of how to prevent incidents by including in the explanations how incorrect perceptions and misunderstandings can arise without such knowledge of ATC procedures and the issuing of clearances. Subjects include: IFR, VFR, Special VFR, collision prevention, operations inside and outside controlled airspace, weather, emergencies, explanations of clearances and how responsibilities change between the controller and the pilot with certain clearances.
