Book Flexural Behaviour of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Tunnel Linings

Download or read book Flexural Behaviour of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete Tunnel Linings written by Martin Blazejowski and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promotion of steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) as a construction material for tunnel linings has prompted a number of researchers to focus on methods of evaluating their flexural strength and stiffness. This thesis presents the results of an experimental and numerical investigation of the flexural behaviour of full-scale steel fibre reinforced concrete tunnel lining segments. A series of a three-point flexure tests were performed to evaluate the maximum load carrying capacity, the load-deformation behaviour and crack propagation characteristics of these segments. The material properties of the steel fibre reinforced concrete were also studied, using both destructive and non-destructive methods. Element compression and tension tests were conducted to characterize the compressive and tensile strength properties of the SFRC. Additionally, computed tomographic scanning was conducted to analyse and estimate the density fraction and fibre orientation of the fibres in SFRC cores. Three-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to calibrate a concrete damage plasticity constitutive model and provide better understanding of the segment flexural behaviour. The experimental program indicated that the variation in structural performance of the segments was likely due to an inhomogeneity of fibre distribution and orientation. Modifying the numerical model to account for these variations resulted in a more accurate analysis. Furthermore, from the numerical finite element analysis it was found that the non-linear elasto-plastic concrete damage plasticity model in the crack zone of the beam was mesh dependent. Parametric analyses also revealed that the model was particularly sensitive to small changes to the tensile material property input parameters.

Book Use of Non steel Fiber Reinforcement in Concrete Tunnel Lining

Download or read book Use of Non steel Fiber Reinforcement in Concrete Tunnel Lining written by Sang Yeon Seo and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber reinforcement is being widely used in concrete tunnel linings these days. Using fiber reinforcement can save not only cost, but also labor and time spent on construction. However, many owners hesitate to incorporate fiber reinforcement in tunnel lining due to lack of experience with and knowledge of the behavior of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) In this study, fiber reinforced concrete was made with various kinds of fibers such as steel fiber, macro-synthetic fiber and hybrid fiber (a blend of macro-synthetic fiber and glass fiber). Many experimental tests were performed to investigate the compressive, flexural and shear behavior of fiber reinforced concrete. In addition to the structural capacity of FRC, the distribution of fiber reinforcement inside the concrete matrix was investigated. Test results of these experimental tests were thoroughly examined to compare and quantify the effects of fiber reinforcement. Next, the test results were used to generate axial force-bending moment interaction diagrams based on current design approaches. In addition, the current design approaches were modified to estimate the accurate and exact value of bending moment. Fiber reinforcement clearly improved the structural performance of tunnel lining. The post-peak flexural and shear strength was significantly influenced by the type and amount of fiber reinforcement.

Book Fibre reinforced concrete From design to structural applications

Download or read book Fibre reinforced concrete From design to structural applications written by FIB - Féd. Int. du Béton and published by FIB - Féd. Int. du Béton. This book was released on 2016 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FRC-2014 Workshop Fibre Reinforced Concrete: from Design to Structural Applications was the first ACI-fib joint technical event. The Workshop, held at Polytechnique Montreal (Canada) on July 24th and 25th 2014, was attended by 116 participants from 25 countries and 4 continents. The first international FRC workshop was held in Bergamo (Italy) in 2004. At that time, the lack of specific building codes and standards was identified as the main inhibitor to the application of this technology in engineering practice. Ten years after Bergamo, many of the objectives identified at that time have been achieved. The use of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) for designing structural members in bending and shear has recently been addressed in the fib Model Code 2010. Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) has also been used structurally in several building and bridge projects in Europe and North-America. SFRC has been widely used in segmental tunnel linings all over the world. Members of ACI544 and fib TG-4.1 have been involved in writing code based specifications for the design of FRC structural members. More than fifty papers were presented at the Workshop from which forty-four were selected for this joint ACI/fib publication. The papers are organised in the document under six themes: Design guidelines and specifications, Material properties for design, Behaviour and design of beams and columns, Behaviour and design of slabs and other structures, Behaviour and design of foundations and underground components, and finally, Applications in structure and underground construction projects.

Book Precast tunnel segments in fibre reinforced concrete

Download or read book Precast tunnel segments in fibre reinforced concrete written by fib Fédération Internationale du Béton and published by FIB - Féd. Int. du Béton. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the publication of this bulletin, fib Commission 1 is initiating a new series of documents related to the use of structural concrete in underground construction, where structural concrete plays a major and increasingly important role. The usage of underground space is more than ever a key issue of urban planning and fib decided to start addressing the issues related to the design and construction of concrete structures in this particular environment. In this context one the most significant applications of structural concrete is tunnel lining, for which the properties of reinforced concrete are particularly well suited through compressive strength, water tightness, ductility, and durability. Reinforced concrete tunnels linings have mostly been traditionally cast in situ, but the development of Tunnel Boring Machines has lead to the invention of precast concrete segmental lining technology, which is nowadays one of the most promising applications of Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC). Thanks to the courage and dedication of innovative designers and contractors, a number of large tunnels have already been built around the World with FRC precast linings, and this report presents the experience acquired with these projects, and also provides guidance about the way to apply 2010 fib Model Code recommendations on FRC to these structures. The main drivers of this evolution from RC to FRC are a better ductility, more durability, and easier fabrication and construction process. As Commission 1 chair, I am very grateful to Alberto Meda and to all members of this task group for opening the way to this new field of underground structures within our commission, and to have efficiently produced a document that will be useful to our members and to the construction community around the World.

  • ISBN : 9783659226151
  • Pages : 60 pages

Download or read book Mechanical Properties of Steel written by Sanjaya Kumar Patro and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Number of steel fiber types are available as reinforcement. Round steel fibers, the commonly used type, are produced by cutting round wires into short lengths. The typical diameters lie in the range of 0.25 to 0.75 mm. Steel fibers having rectangular cross-section are produced by slitting the sheets about 0.25 mm thick. For improving the mechanical bond between the fiber and matrix, indented, crimped, hook-ended fibers are normally produced. Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) provides additional strength in flexure, fatigue, impact and spalling. These properties lead to smaller concrete sections, improved surface quality and reduced maintenance. The main applications of SFRC are in highway, airfield pavements, hydraulic structures, tunnel linings, industrial floors, bridge decks, repair works, etc.
