Book excerpt: Setting: Virginia in the 1930s. Twin sisters, the Ravens, one blind (Alisha), the other beautiful and pampered (Jenny), vie for their mother's affection. A double wedding ceremony results in terror and death. Shortly thereafter, Jenny is confined to a home for the insane: Gristmoor, a place where the evil Dr. Braun intimidates and seduces her patients. In attending to Jenny, Sizemore, Braun's half witted lackey, makes an error in judgement and soon Jenny is dead. But buried with her in the stench of her grave is a mysterious blue liquid that Sizemore tells Braun "bring the dead back to life." Braun ignores his admonition. Dr. Borman, lead psychiatrist at Gristmoor, is suspicious of the strange goings on at the institution and begins to quietly investigate the abuse of several inmates and the death of Jenny Raven. Things at Gristmoor begin to stir from the crypt and a new and metamorphosed Jenny rises to seek revenge on her sightless sister and all the others who have caused her such pain while among the living. Braun and Sizemore meet their deaths quickly. Detective Maurice Goodman is on the scene first and his suspicions are soon aroused by the baffling deaths of Braun and Sizemore, and he turns his attention to Borman. Other deaths connected with weddings follow, some as far away as Pennsylvania. Borman, linking various clues, believes that a supernatural "creature" is despoiling the country side. Convincing a reluctant Goodman of this fact, they join forces in tracking the thing down. Alisha, not surprised, has had many real and dreamy encounters with her demonic sister-Alisha being her prime target. As Jenny seeks her revenge the chase leads to the Outer Banks of North Carolina as the horror culminates in several deaths and resolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kyle Lynch believes in true love. The summer of 1997 and everything has turned to shit. School is over and every person Kyle knows is going out into the new world. Like a group of Columbus searching for their own new definition. One in which truth, justice, and love all co-exists amongst that which is modern American society. Its 221 years of propaganda, 70 years since the lost generation, 35 years since the beats, and everything else in between. One can only figure it out for himself. So Kyle sets out first to find himself and then to find something to live for. The search for Mr. Cassady and guy named Raul. An idealist with no actual intellect but a genuine heart Kyle travels from L.A., to home, back to L.A., and then upon a road trip that leads nowhere except into the very depths of his own mind. Kyle: When you sit down and take a look back at yourself sometimes the initial image is quite appealing. Filled with ideals, convictions, beliefs, and a knack for excitement. You or in the case of myself you lament the good times past. That hot red head in San Diego that could suck a dick like it had been her pacifier all her life. Its all glitz and glamour. Looking back you feel old and haggard. Tired and unfulfilled so you lunge harder into your new life that cant by any means live up to the life youve already lived. Its always the search. Life has to be lived, and level, by level we search to grow. Following the rutted path makes no sense when only the exploration means anything. So we embark with no map, and no star to guide us through our travails. No understanding of love. No understanding of right. No wrong. Just life. Left or right... no middle? And so it begins...

Book excerpt: Two boys pack their tents after a weekend in the Australian bush. But their father does not arrive to pick them up and it becomes clear that something very unusual is happening. In the distance, the Australian capital city is in flames. Two brothers must work together to fight and survive against an enemy from the stars. Another race has watched the arrival of this new enemy, but help is far away. Something big is happening and the earth will never be the same as the brothers find and fight the force that has turned their world upside down. Parental Notes: This book was written for my two sons to explore (as we developed the plot together) how they needed to trust and rely on each other for the rest of their lives. The book is action oriented but is built around this theme of cooperation. In addition to exploring some behavioural themes such as violence and grief, the story also introduces issues such as environmentalism and apocalyptic threats.

Book Do I Make Myself Clear

Download or read book Do I Make Myself Clear written by Harold Evans and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wise and entertaining guide to writing English the proper way by one of the greatest newspaper editors of our time. Harry Evans has edited everything from the urgent files of battlefield reporters to the complex thought processes of Henry Kissinger. He's even been knighted for his services to journalism. In Do I Make Myself Clear?, he brings his indispensable insight to us all in his definite guide to writing well. The right words are oxygen to our ideas, but the digital era, with all of its TTYL, LMK, and WTF, has been cutting off that oxygen flow. The compulsion to be precise has vanished from our culture, and in writing of every kind we see a trend towards more -- more speed and more information but far less clarity. Evans provides practical examples of how editing and rewriting can make for better communication, even in the digital age. Do I Make Myself Clear? is an essential text, and one that will provide every writer an editor at his shoulder.

Book Tibetan Logic

  • Author : Katherine Rogers
  • Publisher : Shambhala Publications
  • Release : 2009-03-16
  • ISBN : 1559399139
  • Pages : 505 pages

Download or read book Tibetan Logic written by Katherine Rogers and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within Tibetan Buddhism has arisen a system of education and a curriculum designed to enable the student to develop a path of reasoning—a consciousness trained in reasoned analysis until capable of understanding first the meaning of religious texts and eventually the true nature of reality. An important aspect of Tibetan logic is that it is used to develop new and valid knowledge about oneself and the world. Included here is a translation of a text by Pur-bu-jok, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama's philosophy tutor on the topic of Signs and Reasonings—a manual introducing beginners to the principles, vocabulary, and concepts of the system of logic. The purpose of Pur-bu-jok's text is to lay a foundation for understanding how valid cognition is acquired. What is validity? How is valid knowledge acquired? What can be known? Further, what knowledge can be acquired through reasoning that will lead one to spiritual development and even to buddhahood? Katherine Rogers has enriched the translation with commentary by several eminent scholars of the Ge-luk-pa order, revealing a marvelous path that draws one into the heart of the Tibetan approach to knowledge and self-transformation. It is fundamental to Tibetan thought that true knowledge is practical, useful, and ultimately transforming and liberating. Such knowledge is far from obvious, but it can be attained through correct reasoning. Thus, logic is an important tool—a part of the spiritual path leading ultimately to complete self-transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreyfus examines the central ideas of Dharmakīrti, one of the most important Indian Buddhist philosophers, and their reception among Tibetan thinkers. During the golden age of ancient Indian civilization, Dharmakīrti articulated and defended Buddhist philosophical principles. He did so more systematically than anyone before his time (the seventh century CE) and was followed by a rich tradition of profound thinkers in India and Tibet. This work presents a detailed picture of this Buddhist tradition and its relevance to the history of human ideas. Its perspective is mostly philosophical, but it also uses historical considerations as they relate to the evolution of ideas.

Book Daughters of Earth Sons of Heaven

Download or read book Daughters of Earth Sons of Heaven written by Daniel Ricardo Casias and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human species on earth is a hybrid species born of earthly women and ancient male warriors who fell from outer space. All ancient civilizations knew this because it happened in their time. Their legend and lore tell of the exploits of these heavenly beings and their offspring. The Christian Bible and the Jewish Talmud in the book of Genesis call these extraterrestrial warriors various names in different translations. They are referred to as heavenly beings, sons of God, giants on the earth, and of course sons of heaven. But all translations of the Bible narrate the same simple story. After the fall, the sons of heaven saw that earthly women were beautiful, and they took them for their wives. These daughters of earth were beautiful both to the eye and mind. These daughters of earth carried in them the seeds of our civilization, compassion, cooperation and understanding. The product of this union became not only our hybrid species but the heroes and great men and women throughout recorded and unrecorded history. We are them. Rico is the last remaining son of heaven on earth who fell here in ancient times to father our civilization. Lost, alone, and broken, he grieves the mortality of his hybrid species. They do not share his impossibly long lifespan. Living among them is constant loss, pain, and grief. Rico also grieves his hybrid species dark side. Some offspring retain the unquenchable hunger for flesh of their earth ancestors and the long lifespan of the sons of heaven. The ugly head of Tarquez periodically scars the history of humankind with death, destruction, and sorrow. Tarquez is one of those hybrids born of the first generation of the union who retained both the unquenchable hunger for flesh and the long life span of the sons of heaven.
