Book excerpt: Deep in the landlocked heart of the Midwest, the characters in The Spoils are drowning under the weight of masculinity, paralyzed in the grip of things left unsaid. These men are broken and breaking, struggling to reckon with the decisions they've made and those they have yet to face. Set mostly in and around Kansas, the stories in this powerful collection explore how men perform, in their jobs and personal lives, and investigate the gray area between doing what's best for oneself and acting a part to make others happy. A man questions whether he should leave his drug-addicted girlfriend and her son or stay, sacrificing his own well-being to be the boy's father. Fed up with the role of the stooge, a Washington Generals player takes his A-game to the Harlem Globetrotters and has to face the unforeseen consequences. A rookie prison guard sent to procure a death row inmate's final meal commits a small, subversive act of humanity. In a world where the line between right and wrong is constantly shifting, some struggle to do the right thing, while others eschew the line altogether and deal with the sometimes violent repercussions. The Spoils examines these difficult choices and will appeal to readers of literary fiction and short stories, especially readers of fiction based in the Midwest.

Book Flash in the Attic

Download or read book Flash in the Attic written by Michelle Richmond and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring 33 stories under 1000 words by the winners of the Flash in the Attic Flash Fiction Contest. The very brief stories in this volume, by turns playful, provocative, poignant, fantastical, fearless, and wildly imaginative, prove just how much can be accomplished in 1000 words or fewer. As it turns out, 1000 words is plenty of room to make a scene, get people in trouble, get them out of it, or parse language one letter at a time, as Sharon Goldberg does in "Rear-End Collisions," which took second place. 1000 words is also enough room for the dead to visit the living on a subway car bound for Brooklyn, for fathers to lose the hearts of their daughters, and for the sun to threaten the future of the earth and the intricate bonds of family. Neal Allen's winning story, "The Mayan Calendar," proves that 1000 words is also enough to span the history of civilization.

Book A Dictionary of Jewish Babylonian Aramaic of the Talmudic and Geonic Periods

Download or read book A Dictionary of Jewish Babylonian Aramaic of the Talmudic and Geonic Periods written by Michael Sokoloff and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 1610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first new dictionary of Jewish Babylonian Aramaic in a century, this towering scholarly achievement provides a complete lexicon of the entire vocabulary used in both literary and epigraphic sources from the Jewish community in Babylon from the third century C.E. to the twelfth century. Author Michael Sokoloff's primary source is, of course, the Babylonian Talmud, one of the most important and influential works in Jewish literature. Unlike the authors of previous dictionaries of this dialect, however, he also uses a variety of other sources, from inscriptions and legal documents to other rabbinical literature. A Dictionary of Jewish Babylonian Aramaic also differs from earlier lexographic efforts in its focus on a single dialect. Previous dictionaries have been composite works containing various Aramaic dialects from different periods, blurring distinctions in meaning and nuance. Sokoloff has been able to draw on the most current linguistic and textual scholarship to ensure the complete accuracy of his lexical entries, each of which is divided into six parts: lemma or root, part of speech, English gloss, etymology, semantic features, and bibliographic references. Another important feature in this invaluable reference work is its index of all cited passages, which allows the reader of a given text to easily find the semantics of a particular word. In addition to linguists and specialists in Jewish Aramaic literature, lay readers and students will also find this comprehensive, up-to-date dictionary useful for understanding the Babylonian Talmud.
