Book FLASH a Monte Carlo Procedure for Use in Calculating Light Scattering in a Spherical Shell Atmosphere

Download or read book FLASH a Monte Carlo Procedure for Use in Calculating Light Scattering in a Spherical Shell Atmosphere written by D. G. Collins and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program designated FLASH has been developed to provide a means to study the propagation of monochromatic radiation from a plane parallel source through a spherical shell atmosphere. A simple illustration of the backward Monte Carlo method utilized in the development of the FLASH program is discussed in order to show the advantage of the method. A brief description of the methods employed in the FLASH program is given to illustrate the application of the backward Monte Carlo treatment of light propagation through a spherical shell atmosphere. Several comparisons of FLASH generated data with data from other calculational methods are shown. (Author).

Book Computer Procedure for Calculating Time Dependent Light Scattering in Spherical shell Atmospheres

Download or read book Computer Procedure for Calculating Time Dependent Light Scattering in Spherical shell Atmospheres written by Radiation Research Associates and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes three Monte Carlo procedures that were developed for the purpose of providing calculational tools that could be used to study the transport of visible and infrared light in spherical-shell atmosphere. These procedures, designated as FLASH, treat atmospheric scattering problems for plane-parallel, point, volume and spherical surface sources. The FLASH procedures consider the effect of Rayleigh and aerosol scattering and ozone, water vapor, CO2, and aerosol particle absorption on the transport of light. The procedures also consider the changes in polarization that occurs at each scattering event. The input formats of the codes allows one to describe the scattering and absorption properties of the atmosphere as a function of altitude. Provisions are incorporated for treating the reflection of light from ground and cloud surfaces with an albedo method. Also described are the MIE-II and SHINE procedures. The MIE-II procedure uses Mie theory to generate aerosol particle scattering and absorption coefficients and the four elements of the aerosol phase matrix for use as input data to the FLASH procedures. The SHINE procedure was developed to integrate the results of FLASH CALCULATIONS FOR POINT MONOCHROMATIC SOURCES OVER AN ARBITRARY WAVELENGTH AND TIME DEPENDENT SOURCE SPECTRUM. (Author).

Book Monte Carlo Calculations in Spherical shell Atmospheres

Download or read book Monte Carlo Calculations in Spherical shell Atmospheres written by W. G. Blättner and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FLASH procedure was modified so that a printout of both the scattered intensity and the polarization parameters could be obtained as a function of the receiver polar and azimuthal angles. Calculations were run with FLASH for Rayleigh atmospheres with optical thicknesses of 0.25 and 1.0 for comparison with the data reported by Coulson, Dave and Sekera, and for a homogeneous Mie-Rayleigh atmosphere with a turbidity factor of 2 for comparison with the data reported by Bullrich, Eschelbach, et al. The FLASH procedure was modified so as to incorporate several methods of improving the accuracy of both single and higher order scattering calculations for twilight studies. The procedure was then used in a study to determine the effect of several assumed dust profiles on both the single and multiple scattered radiation under twilight illumination for 0.5 and 0.7 micrometer wavelength light. Results are presented which show how the color ratio (I(Lambda=0.7 micrometer)/I(Lambda=0.5 micrometer)) varies with the sun depression angle for a number of different dust profiles. (Author).

Book Inversion Methods in Atmospheric Remote Sounding

Download or read book Inversion Methods in Atmospheric Remote Sounding written by Adarsh Deepak and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inversion Methods in Atmospheric Remote Sounding contains the technical proceedings of the First International Interactive Workshop on Inversion Methods in Atmospheric Remote Sounding, held in Williamsburg, Virginia, on December 15-17, 1976. The papers review the state of the art in inversion methods used in retrieving information about the atmosphere from remotely sensed data. The mathematical theory of inversion methods is described, together with the application of these methods to the remote sounding of atmospheric temperature, relative humidity, and gaseous and aerosol constituents. Comprised of 21 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to methods for solving problems in radiative transfer and multiple scattering, followed by a discussion on the problem of radiative transfer in a scattering plane-parallel atmosphere. The next section is devoted to the mathematical theory of inversion methods and considers some aspects of the inversion problem in remote sensing, along with the relaxation method for the inverse solution of nonlinear and linear transfer equations. The final section explores inversion methods in gaseous, thermal, and aerosol atmospheres, covering topics such as the Backus-Gilbert theory and its application to retrieval of ozone and temperature profiles; inversion of scattered radiance horizon profiles for gaseous concentrations and aerosol parameters; and inversion of passive microwave remote sensing data from satellites. This monograph will be of interest to scientists from universities, government agencies, and research laboratories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 8 contains literature published in 1972 and received before March 15, 1973; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included.
