Book excerpt: This publication by the Flemish Architecture Institute presents a generous selection of recently completed projects in words and pictures. About fifty projects are covered by means of extensive plans and photos and they give rise to a critical reflection on current developments in Flemish architecture. The book includes articles that deal with such topics as the poetry of utility buildings, the responsibility of architecture for the landscape, the exploration of a new scale and the individual character of Flemish architecture abroad. What the visual essays by four leading photographers have in common is a serious interest in the concrete physical experience. They view the architectural object not as something static, but as a beckoning space that should be explored, studied, tried and tested.

Book When Attitudes Take Form

Download or read book When Attitudes Take Form written by Sofie De Caigny and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public interest in architecture and spatial issues has never been so high. The Flanders Architectural Review No.14 presents striking architecture from Flanders and Brussels. It assembles a broad range of recently completed architectural projects and situates them in the evolution of the socio-cultural domain in which they arose. The key concept for the selection of these projects is encapsulated in the title: When Attitudes Take Form. The editors chose architecture that demonstrates a convincing social commitment while also challenging and questioning its own discipline. These fifty projects display the multifaceted nature of the resulting architecture. Each of the twelve essays examines a current topic. The authors scrutinise the conditions for the production of contemporary architecture, such as the large-scale urban expansion project, the (post-) reconstruction landscape of the south-west corner of Flanders, and school building within the region. But they also explore the various positions adopted by architects: that of designer and also of researcher or committed citizen in the civil sector. With essays by Luce Beeckmans, Isabelle Blancke & Jürgen Vandewalle, Sofie De Caigny, Michiel De Cleene, Arnaud Hendrickx, Petrus Kemme, Katrien Laenen, Maarten Liefooghe, Petra Pferdmenges, Eireen Schreurs, Stichting Mevrouw Meijer, Helen Thomas and Maarten Van Den Driessche.

Book Celebrating Public Architecture

Download or read book Celebrating Public Architecture written by Florian Heilmeyer and published by Jovis Verlag. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Building Knowledge in Architecture

Download or read book Building Knowledge in Architecture written by Richard Foqué and published by ASP / VUBPRESS / UPA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Foqué establishes a general design theory based on the axioms of pragmatic thinking, a crucial unity between experience and the process of learning, and between conceptual thought and situational consciousness. Building Knowledge develops a theoretical framework and practical instrumentation to establish a knowledge base for the discipline of architecture. Part one of the book presents design methods as a third way of investigating reality apart from scientific methods or the conception of art. By describing thescience-philosophical context, Foqué extensively analyses the nature of design activity and the design process, its inherent characteristics, and the differences between science and art. As such, it is argued that design processes have a research dimension an sich, which are essentially contextual and action driven. Foqué offers an integrated and comprehensive perspective to understand design activity both from an epistemological and practical standpoint. This results in an expanded discourse about the true nature of architectural design processes. Within this theoretical framework, part two explains how case study research is a primordial means to establish a knowledge base for the discipline and profession of architecture. From this premise, Foqué compares case study research in law, medicine and business administration and develops a practical and comprehensive approach to case studies in architecture. The methodology offers a solid and general framework wherein a consistent body of knowledge regarding architectural design processes can be generated. This promotes deeper insight in the complex relationship between context, product and process, which governs every design process on the one hand, and between the several stakeholders involved on the other hand."--Publisher.

Book Autonomous Architecture in Flanders

Download or read book Autonomous Architecture in Flanders written by Caroline Voet and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence and position of the ‘Generation 74’ in Flemish and international architecture Five well-known architects who studied together in Ghent, Marie-José Van Hee, Christian Kieckens, Marc Dubois, Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem, can be considered as leading protagonists of their generation. From their education at Sint-Lucas Institute and the Academy of Fine Arts to the present day, their professional careers and legacy have been of great importance to the development of Flemish architecture. In their early works and writings, they established a distinct architectural language, rooted in historical knowledge and with a reflection to art and craftsmanship. Architecture was singled out as a spatial phenomenon with an autonomous logic grounded in inhabitation and experience. This generation represents a significant turn towards architectural autonomy in Flanders which resonated with similar international developments in the late 1970s. Moreover they played a decisive role in the emancipation and professionalization of the architectural culture in Flanders. With contributions by Birgit Cleppe (Ghent University), Sofie De Caigny (CVAa), Maarten Delbeke (Ghent University), Fredie Floré (KU Leuven), William Mann, Yves Schoonjans (KU Leuven), Eireen Schreurs (TU Delft), Lara Schrijver (University of Antwerp), Dirk Somers (Ghent University), Sven Sterken (KU Leuven), Mechthild Stuhlmacher (TU Delft), Hera Van Sande (VUB / KU Leuven), Katrien Vandermarliere, Caroline Voet (KU Leuven)

Book Bravoure Scarcity Beauty

Book excerpt: The official publication on the Belgian contribution to the Biennale Architettura 2016 in Venice. It is a further elaboration of the work exhibited in the pavilion and a contribution to the architectural debate in Flanders and beyond. Comprised out of essays, interviews and images, this book offers an answer to the question what craftsmanship can mean today. The Flanders Architecture Institute commissioned the architects to develop an exhibition in the Belgian pavilion on the theme of 'craftsmanship'. The team, consisting of architecten de vylder vinck taillieu, doorzon interior architects, and architectural photographer and artist Filip Dujardin, explores the question of what craftsmanship can mean in conditions of scarcity. In order to demonstrate this, the pavilion exhibits fragments of thirteen representative projects of thirteen Flemish architects. Exhibition: Biennale Venice, Belgian Pavilion (28.05.-27.11.2016).

Download or read book The Making of Home written by Judith Flanders and published by Atlantic Books Ltd. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that 'home' is a special place, a separate place, a place where we can be our true selves, is so obvious to us today that we barely pause to think about it. But, as Judith Flanders shows in this revealing book, 'home' is a relatively new concept. When in 1900 Dorothy assured the citizens of Oz that 'There is no place like home', she was expressing a view that was a culmination of 300 years of economic, physical and emotional change. In The Making of Home, Flanders traces the evolution of the house across northern Europe and America from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, and paints a striking picture of how the homes we know today differ from homes through history. The transformation of houses into homes, she argues, was not a private matter, but an essential ingredient in the rise of capitalism and the birth of the Industrial Revolution. Without 'home', the modern world as we know it would not exist, and as Flanders charts the development of ordinary household objects - from cutlery, chairs and curtains, to fitted kitchens, plumbing and windows - she also peels back the myths that surround some of our most basic assumptions, including our entire notion of what it is that makes a family. As full of fascinating detail as her previous bestsellers, The Making of Home is also a book teeming with original and provocative ideas.

Book excerpt: RESTful .NET is the first book that teaches Windows developers to build RESTful web services using the latest Microsoft tools. Written by Windows Communication Foundation (WFC) expert Jon Flanders, this hands-on tutorial demonstrates how you can use WCF and other components of the .NET 3.5 Framework to build, deploy and use REST-based web services in a variety of application scenarios. RESTful architecture offers a simpler approach to building web services than SOAP, SOA, and the cumbersome WS- stack. And WCF has proven to be a flexible technology for building distributed systems not necessarily tied to WS- standards. RESTful .NET provides you with a complete guide to the WCF REST programming model for building web services consumed either by machines or humans. You'll learn how to: Program Read-Only (GET) services Program READ/WRITE services Host REST services Program REST feeds Program AJAX REST clients Secure REST endpoints Use workflow to deliver REST services Consume RESTful XML services using WCF Work with HTTP Work with ADO.NET Data Services (Astoria) RESTful .NET introduces you to the ideas of REST and RESTful architecture, and includes a detailed discussion of how the Web/REST model plugs into the WCF architecture. If you develop with .NET, it's time to jump on the RESTful bandwagon. This book explains how. "While REST is simple, WCF is not. To really understand and exploit this part of WCF requires a knowledgeable and experienced guide. I don't know anybody who's better suited for this role than Jon Flanders. ...Jon is first-rate at explaining complicated things. This book is the best introduction I've seen to creating and using these services with WCF."--David Chappell, Chappell & Associates
