  • ISBN : 9780738517001
  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Panama City Beach written by Jan Smith and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered one of the world's most beautiful beaches for its sugar white sand and emerald blue-green waters, Panama City Beach has, until recently, remained one of Florida's undiscovered treasures. First documented by Spanish explorers in the 1500s and later by the English, the region remained unsettled because of its inaccessibility and marauding renegade inhabitants. At a time when property was valued according to the crops it could grow, the beach was dismissed as a "no man's land" unsuitable for habitation. The early 1930s and the Hathaway Bridge, connecting Panama City Beach to the mainland, marked its "discovery" and the beginning of area tourism.

Book Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society

Download or read book Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society written by Neil Roos and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were whites implicated in and shaped by apartheid culture and society, and how did they contribute to it? In Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society, historian Neil Roos traces the lives of ordinary white people in South Africa during the apartheid years, beginning in 1948 when the National Party swept into power on the back of its catchall apartheid slogan. Drawing on his own family's story and others, Roos explores how working-class whites frequently defied particular aspects of the apartheid state but seldom opposed or even acknowledged the idea of racial supremacy, which lay at the heart of the apartheid society. This cognitive dissonance afforded them a way to simultaneously accommodate and oppose apartheid and allowed them to later claim they never supported the apartheid system. Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society offers a telling reminder that the politics and practice of race, in this case apartheid-era whiteness, derive not only from the top, but also from the bottom.

Download or read book Tromp s Last Stand written by Tim Keegan and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jake Tromp's wife has left him. But he still has his guns. He makes do, operating as a private eye from a second-floor office, next to a prostitute's parlour. What else is an old South African to do in a new country? Tromp chooses his clients unwisely. Like the man who instructs him to kidnap a shady businessman's daughter. Only, is it the right girl Tromp and his fumbling assistant Frikkie capture? Soon they shackled with two kidnapped girls, one of whom is more street-savvy than Tromp and Frikkie put together. Not only does the sassy lass hit it off with Omo, her Nigerian keeper, she also starts managing her own kidnapping. From Florida her rich Cuban dady - believing Fidel Castro to be behind everyting - send two heavies to find his girl. Soon, Cubans are crawling all over Cape Town. Or are they? Tromp, who has been known to try as a few tricks of his own, condidently plays the two sides against each other. When he's hired to track down the very girls he kidnapped, life becomes really complicated. And when the police get wind of the whole thing, there's no end to the confusion. Tromp's Last Stand, a comical romp through the Cape Town underworld, is very unlike the conventional speeding, gun-toting, girl-grabbing crime novel. In these delightfully irreverent pages you should rather expect slow-motion car chases, raids that backfire and girls that don't want to be rescued.

What she encounters on this path, from India to America and from girlhood to womanhood, shows the beauty and darkness and revelation inherent in the journeys of all those who not only want to survive, but to grow. When Jasmine was first published in 1989, the New York Times called it “one of the most suggestive novels we have about what it is to become an American.” Thirty years later, Jasmine has only grown in its significance. Book The Motel in America

Download or read book The Motel in America written by John A. Jakle and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 1220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second volume of the acclaimed "Gas, Food, Lodging" trilogy, authors John Jakle, Keith Sculle, and Jefferson Rogers take an informative, entertaining, and comprehensive look at the history of the motel. From the introduction of roadside tent camps and motor cabins in the 1910s to the wonderfully kitschy motels of the 1950s that line older roads and today's comfortable but anonymous chains that lure drivers off the interstate, Americans and their cars have found places to stay on their travels. Motels were more than just places to sleep, however. They were the places where many Americans saw their first color television, used their first coffee maker, and walked on their first shag carpet. Illustrated with more than 230 photographs, postcards, maps, and drawings, The Motel in America details the development of the motel as a commercial enterprise, its imaginative architectural expressions, and its evolution within the place-product-packaging concept along America's highways. As an integral part of America's landscape and culture, the motel finally receives the in-depth attention it deserves.
