Book excerpt: This research aims to analyse the memories of the Rio 2016 Olympic Flame Guardians as immaterial heritage and sociocultural legacy of the Olympic Games Rio 2016. The so-called "Olympic Flame Guardians" were a group of men and women who had the "mission" of protect this Olympic symbol during the torch relay. Despite such important role there is a lack of studies about them. The study written sources are documents research at the Olympic Studies Centre. Based on the oral history method, all Rio 2016 Flame Guardians were interviewed. The research results indicate that the Guardian role got prominence with other nomenclatures since Los Angeles 1984; when the function was created to assist in the relay and display sponsor brands. The event impact on Rio 2016 Guardians was analysed in three categories: (1) personal, related to acquired self-knowledge; (2) social-cultural, related to the acquisition of knowledge of different social realities and regional cultures in the country; (3) technical, related to the skills acquired for the role. A conclusion reveals that the Rio 2016 Guardians was a unique opportunity to create "public value" as intangible legacy because of their lived moment during the relay and not by any legacy plan.

Through intensive interviews and co-participations with leading Greek and American actors and the contributions of young Greek researchers who worked backstage on the relay, Bearing Light demonstrates how culturally parochial the managerial regime of "world’s best practices" often turns out to be and yet how inescapable it has become for those who wish to communicate across cultural and political boundaries. Brown recounts the events surrounding the fire in the first and only book on to chronicle the dramatic story that unfolded. Whereas Oregon's famous "Biscuit" fire in 2002 burned 350,000 acres in one week, the Hinckley fire did the same damage in five hours. The fire created its own weather, including hurricane-strength winds, bubbles of plasma-like glowing gas, and 200-foot-tall flames. In some instances, "fire whirls," or tornadoes of fire, danced out from the main body of the fire to knock down buildings and carry flaming debris into the sky. Temperatures reached 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit--the melting point of steel. As the fire surrounded the town, two railroads became the only means of escape. Two trains ran the gauntlet of fire. One train caught on fire from one end to the other. In all, more than 400 people died, leading to a revolution in forestry management practices and federal agencies that monitor and fight wildfires today. There is confusion on the timeframes and targets involved in delivery and a lack of clear ownership of legacy as a whole. The committee recommends that a minister be given overall responsibility for the Olympic legacy, enabling greater co-ordination across Whitehall departments. It also believes the Mayor of London should be given control over further development of east London and the Olympic Park in Stratford. There is also a warning over the geographic disparity in the economic benefits stemming from the Games. While London and the south-east of England benefited with nearly 15,000 additional jobs, just seven were created in the North East. London 2012 may have promised to "inspire a generation" but the committee says it found "little evidence [of a] step change" in sports participation levels across the UK. UK Sport, the body that invests approximately £100m in high-performance athletes and teams each year and decides funding levels for Olympic and Paralympic sports, is also criticised. The committee believes not enough is being done by UK Sport to help both team and emerging sports. The 'no compromise' approach of UK Sport has delivered medals for Team GB and has clearly improved top-end importance. This approach, however, has an inherent bias against team sports, and fails to help emerging sports, some of which, such as handball and volleyball, generated real enthusiasm at London 2012.
