Book Technologies for Home Networking

Download or read book Technologies for Home Networking written by Sudhir Dixit and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad overview of the home networking field, ranging from wireless technologies to practical applications In the future, it is expected that private networks (e.g., home networks) will become part of the global network ecosystem, participating in sharing their own content, running IP-based services, and possibly becoming service providers themselves. This is already happening in the so-called "social networks" and peer-to-peer file sharing networks on the Internet—making this emerging topic one of the most active research areas in the wireless communications field. This book bridges the gap between wireless networking and service research communities, which, until now, have confined their work to their respective fields. Here, a number of industry professionals and academic experts have contributed chapters on various aspects of the subject to present an overview of home networking technologies with a special emphasis on the user as the center of all activities. Coverage includes: Networked home use cases and scenarios Media format, media exchange, and media interoperability Location-aware device and service discovery Security in smart homes Secure service discovery protocol implementation for wireless ad-hoc networks Multimedia content protection in consumer networks Mobile device connectivity in home networks Unlicensed mobile access/generic access network Wireless sensor networks in the home Ultra-wideband and sensor networking in the home environment With a balanced mix of practice and theory, Technologies for Home Networking focuses on the latest technologies for speedier, more reliable wireless networking and explains how to facilitate workable end-to-end solutions from a user's perspective. This book is an ideal resource for practicing engineers, designers, and managers with an interest in home networking and also serves as a valuable text for graduate students.

Book Performance Optimization of IP Multimedia Subsystem

Download or read book Performance Optimization of IP Multimedia Subsystem written by Mlindi Mashologu and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is the basic network architecture for Next Generation Networks (NGN) which is intended to bridge the divide between the traditional circuit switched and packet switched networks, thereby providing a single network capable of providing all service offerings. IMS is based on the IP infrastructure and it enables the convergence of data, speech and video on the same network platform. The IMS forms the basis of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC), where fixed-line operators are striving to provide mobile access and mobile operators are trying to provide fixed access. This is done to provide both services to a customer in a single device. The IMS is based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), which is a text-based protocol. The IMS will generally create additional signaling traffic in the IP based networks, so there is a need to take necessary precautions to minimize the signaling overload. This research is based on how the performance of the IMS can be improved by optimization of SIP as well as IMS elements. An analysis and characterization of the signaling traffic generated by IMS has been performed and how the signaling traffic can be reduced by the compression of SIP using the Burrows Wheeler Transform (BWT) has been explored. The queuing models of the IMS have been formulated and the mathematical approach has been used to find the impact of implementing the Hyper-Threading technology on the IMS Elements.

Book Fixed Mobile Convergence and Beyond

Download or read book Fixed Mobile Convergence and Beyond written by Richard Watson and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile communications users are demanding increased reliability, functionality, and accessibility; they want "always on" access to voice, e-mail, text, and multimedia services as they roam from home to auto to office to outdoor/indoor locations. In addition, there is an increasing deamnd to replace separate landline/mobile telephones with a single handset that can be used wherever its owner might be. Answering those customer needs, fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) marries the mobility provided by cellular networks with the extended connectivity provided by 802.11-based WiFi services and integrates them with landline networks using a single handset. This book provides the theoretical and practical background necessary to successfully plan, develop, and deploy effective FMC networks. This book discusses the various 802.11 and VoIP protocols used in FMC networks, open and proprietary communications protocols, integration of FMC networks to wired telephone networks, mobilizing applications such as text messaging and video, security issues, mobile handset requirements for FMC networks, and the administration/management of FMC networks. Special attention is given to selecting appropriate components for FMC, and numerous case histories and examples from the author's experience are provided. This book is an essential tutorial and reference for any RF/wireless, communications, and networking professional who will work with the next generation of wireless networks. Describes how to develop, deploy, and manage networks that seamlessly combine landline, cellular, and WiFi networks into one converged communications network Thorough coverage of various 802.11 and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) standards and how they impact integration with cellular networks Discusses security considerations and how to successfully manage converged networks Includes numerous case histories and examples from the author's experience---this is not a purely theoretical treatment of the subject!
