Book excerpt: This study determined the Well Head Protection Area (WHPA) for the community wells of Vermilion, Illinois, using a three-dimensional, numerical, groundwater flow model (MODFLOW and MODPATH). The flow model was calibrated to the regional topography. A sensitivity analysis yielded eight unique capture zones which were encompassed in a polygon to demarcate a composite WHPA for the Vermilion wells. Setting river bed conductivity to values greater than 1e-6 m1/s. (1) significantly impacted the shape and size of the capture zones; greater conductivity values yield smaller, less conservative capture zones; and (2) allowed river cells to move more than 10% of the total flow volume. Under these conditions, small, non-penetrating streams act as true hydrologic boundaries.* *This dissertation is a compound document (contains both a paper copy and a CD as part of the dissertation). Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Elman offers a much-needed synthesis of early Chinese science during the Jesuit period (1600-1800) and the modern sciences as they evolved in China under Protestant influence (1840s-1900). By 1600 Europe was ahead of Asia in producing basic machines, such as clocks, levers, and pulleys, that would be necessary for the mechanization of agriculture and industry. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Elman shows, Europeans still sought from the Chinese their secrets of producing silk, fine textiles, and porcelain, as well as large-scale tea cultivation. Chinese literati borrowed in turn new algebraic notations of Hindu-Arabic origin, Tychonic cosmology, Euclidian geometry, and various computational advances. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, imperial reformers, early Republicans, Guomindang party cadres, and Chinese Communists have all prioritized science and technology. In this book, Elman gives a nuanced account of the ways in which native Chinese science evolved over four centuries, under the influence of both Jesuit and Protestant missionaries. In the end, he argues, the Chinese produced modern science on their own terms.
