Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Points of Faith The God Absolute is above the reach of our puny thought, but the God Relative - the God with whom we have to do, because he has to do with us is mani fest in nature, in mind, in history, and in experience. We cannot think him, but we think about him, be cause we must. And we can apprehend, or take hold of, that which we cannot comprehend, or take in. We feel after him, because we have unspeakable need. We did not make ourselves, and there must be a Maker. We cannot care for ourselves, and the world would be a bedlam if there were no Care-taker. How welcome, then, is the message that this Maker and Benefactor is also our Father! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Points of Faith On the walls of many Unitarian churches and Sunday-school rooms hangs a large square of card-board, bearing these words: - Our Faith. We believe in The Fatherhood of God; The Brotherhood of Man; The Leadership of Jesus; Salvation by Character; The Progress of Mankind Onward and Upward Forever "Such will be the theology of the Church of the Future, which will be emancipated from ritualism, dogmatism, and sectarianism, and will possess more and more of the mind and heart of Christ Jesus." So wrote James Freeman Clarke, who formulated what he called these "Five Points of the New Theology" in a sermon preached May 10, 1885, in the Church of the Disciples, Boston, and printed and reprinted in America and England. The title presents it as a contrast to those Five Points of Calvinism "which have been the main and essential doctrines of Orthodoxy in the past." Download or read book The Faith of Catholics on Certain Points of Controversy written by Joseph Berington and published by Forgotten Books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Catholics on Certain Points of Controversy: Confirmed by Scripture, and Attested by the Fathers of the Five First Centuries of the Church The minister of religion, if he heard this reasoning, could not, for a moment, hesitate. He would assure him, that the question stood precisely as he viewed it; and for the satisfaction which he wished, he would refer him to many books written on the subject, and particularly to the works of those venerable men, to whom he had alluded, the Fathers of the Church; acknowledged to have been the fruitful witnesses of the doctrines, which they had received, and themselves delivered. But the works of these Fathers were chiefly written in Greek or Latin, the language of the countries in which they lived; languages not accessible to all readers; and of those works few have been translated. Book 1896 and the Five Redemption Years

Download or read book 1896 and the Five Redemption Years written by William Henry Bishop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1896 and the Five Redemption Years: A Blade O' Grass Christian men, even in these more enlightened times, have been wont to hide behind the letter of the Scripture, and to declare that they are not at fault God, in his infin ite wisdom, has not seen fit to save the world; or sinners, in the hardness of their hearts, have refused to be converted. God has not even inspired his disciples to work more dili gently for the world's salvation. As the inspiration for every good work must come from God, Christian people are not to blame for the unsatisfactory moral condition of man kind. Inferentially and theologically it is God who is at fault. The Christian church goes scot free of blame! The Word of God declares that it has pleased God, through the foolishness of preaching, to save those who believe. If we ignore the less positive teaching of the Scriptures upon this point, and make this text our Bible as far as this one point is concerned, it would seem that preaching is the only duly accredited means of saving the world. At least in apparent fidelity to this idea, the church has magnified the office of the preacher of the gospel until he stands almost alone as the human instrument of salva tion in the modern church. He alone is considered the evangelist of the gospel of Christ, and in every village and hamlet in Civilized countries there has been a pulpit erected for him, and our missionaries also occupy every point of vantage in heathen lands. Surely it would seem that the divine commission had been fulfilled. We have preached the gospel continually and are still preaching, preaching. Preaching; and yet the world is not saved. People will not even come into our churches and sit in the cushioned pews we have provided for them. We have certainly fulfilled the demands of the law, since the gospel is preached every where. What more is needed? Why is the world not saved? The Bible specifically makes faith the basis of salvation, and also teaches that the prayer of faith is duly answered. The church, reading the letter of the law in this respect, also, has established prayer-meeting rooms in connection with every place of worship, and its membership is dili gently exhorted to have greater faith in God, and in his power to save mankind from its sins. We have prayed times without number that the world might be saved, and that the church might receive a greater baptism of the Holy Spirit, and thus be better able to lead men to the Savior, but our prayers have not been answered. We have prayed diligently, and we have also paid for the preaching of the gospel in our churches, but still the world is not saved. What more can be lacking? Book excerpt: TULIP is a popular acronym for the five points of Calvinism--total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of the saints. In this book, these five points are not only concisely explained in the light of the Bible but are also helpfully contrasted to the corresponding five points of Arminianism. The differences between Calvanistic and Arminian beliefs are also summarized at the end of the book for quick reference. Anyone looking for an accessible explanation of this somewhat difficult and controversial doctrine, or looking for help in explaining it to others, will find this an invaluable resource. TULIP has had steady sales since its original Baker publication in 1979, and there is now nearly 55,000 copies in print.

Book excerpt: In a society that is hostile to anyone who declares absolutes, that tolerates faith in any form, that values emotion over reason and trendiness over conviction, it's no suprise that many American chuches have lost their ability to discern between biblical truth and doctrinal error. John MacArthur attempts to set them straight.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Catholics: Confirmed by Scripture, and Attested by the Fathers of the Five First Centureis of the Church It may be, that I have occasionally erred in the translation of some passages, not always very in telligible; but should any such errors be discovered, I trust, it will not be in any point of moment. On some occasions, the original of certain clauses is given. It was my wish to be literal and plain. As order and precision are necessary for the attain ment of accurate knowledge, I thought it necessary, in quoting the Fathers, to preserve the chrono logical series of their lives; so that each authority should take its proper place. I, therefore, marked each century, and quoted the fathers, who belonged to it, in the order in which they lived. This is repeated under caph Proposition. To each name are, likewise, added the letters L. C. Or G. C. De noting whether they belonged to the Latin or the Greek church; and when any Father is, the first time, introduced, I state in a Note, who he was. Book First Principles of Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Principles of Faith Classic Reprint written by Marshall Randles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Faith Since the substance of the following treatise was written, some remarkably able works, handling many of the topics here discussed, have appeared, notably A Study of Orzgz'fls, by Dr. Pressense T/ze P/zz'losop/zy of Tkez'sm, by Dr. Ward T/ze Basis of T/zez'sm, by Dr. Harris P/zysiml cma' Mbrallaw, by Rev. W. Arthur, m.a. And T/ze Unify of Nature, by the Duke of Argyll. This fact led me to consider whether these productions met the want I had aimed at supplying, and thus rendered the publication of my manuscript superfluous. The result was a con viction that, notwithstanding the rare excellence of these works, there was still need for such a book as I had attempted to provide. I therefore issue this production in the hope that it may, in some degree, take part in promoting the cause of truth and human well-being. Unbelief continues to project its shot and shell into the lines of Christian Theism and, though its former attacks have been well met, it must not be left to repeat them unresisted. The present volume only aspires to be one of many contributions, made in vindication of those great principles which underlie the experience and practice of true religion.
