Download or read book Edward Burne Jones Victorian Artist dreamer written by Stephen Wildman and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1998 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is issued in conjunction with the 1998 exhibition of the same name held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and scheduled for venues in England and France. Burnes-Jones (1833-1898) created a style that had widespread influence on both British and European art--a narrative style derived from medieval legend and fused with the influence of Italian Renaissance masters, a style that ceded popularity to a growing taste for abstraction at the end of the 19th century. Now Burne-Jones's star has risen again, and this catalogue contains full discussion of his life and work and representation of his prodigious output of drawings and paintings. 9.5x12.5"Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Thus we see the rotation of luminous forms throughout the series--the trees which perish not, because they are of God's planting--the living creatures in their natural order--until, by the sixth day, the ever-accumulating splendours express the complete work of the Creator. The fourth day brings in the sun and moon. On the fifth we see a flight of sea-birds, and at the angels' feet is the sea-shore, strewn with shells. On the sixth day man and woman stand in the midst. Thus the heavens and the earth were created; and now, see how the painter--is he not himself one of the ministers of God?--has imagined the angels. In the first panel there is one, bearing the globe; in the second there are two; in the third three; their beautiful faces seen beyond the angel of the day. For not only shall God's work endure, but His servants who do His pleasure shall endure also, and shall rejoice together with Him when the day comes. This ever-increasing interest as the design goes on, is as finely wrought out in composition as it is finely conceived. The effect is wonderful. The unity of the single figure makes it complete, we desire nothing more. The complexity of the fourth, and fifth, and sixth, does not take from the unity--any more than the many stars take from the unity of the sky. And lo! on the sixth day--what is this? The six angels are standing; but there is a seventh. The seventh angel, or perhaps the Archangel--for there is a hierarchy in heaven of which I know not the order or rank--the seventh angel is seated. The work is done. It only remains for God to pronounce it very good--and to rest. Now all this wealth of thought and imagination is lavished by Burne-Jones on the six lights of a window of an English church, to be...

Book The Late Victorian Folksong Revival

Download or read book The Late Victorian Folksong Revival written by E. David Gregory and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Late Victorian Folksong Revival: The Persistence of English Melody, 1878-1903, E. David Gregory provides a reliable and comprehensive history of the birth and early development of the first English folksong revival. Continuing where Victorian Songhunters, his first book, left off, Gregory systematically explores what the Late Victorian folksong collectors discovered in the field and what they published for posterity, identifying differences between the songs noted from oral tradition and those published in print. In doing so, he determines the extent to which the collectors distorted what they found when publishing the results of their research in an era when some folksong texts were deemed unsuitable for "polite ears." The book provides a reliable overall survey of the birth of a movement, tracing the genesis and development of the first English folksong revival. It discusses the work of more than a dozen song-collectors, focusing in particular on three key figures: the pioneer folklorist in the English west country, Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould; Frank Kidson, who greatly increased the known corpus of Yorkshire song; and Lucy Broadwood, who collected mainly in the counties of Sussex and Surrey, and with Kidson and others, was instrumental in founding the Folk Song Society in the late 1890s. The book includes copious examples of the song tunes and texts collected, including transcriptions of nearly 300 traditional ballads, broadside ballads, folk lyrics, occupational songs, carols, shanties, and "national songs," demonstrating the abundance and high quality of the songs recovered by these early collectors.

Book Rethinking the Interior c 1867 896

Download or read book Rethinking the Interior c 1867 896 written by Imogen Hart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Aesthetes in Africa to the cultural history of the teapot, the essays in this collection contribute to scholarly debates across a wide range of disciplines. Addressing the question of whether "eclectic" relationships in Victorian decorative arts are actually self-conscious iconographic schemes or merely random juxtapositions of assorted objects, Rethinking the Interior, c. 1867-1896: Aestheticism and Arts and Crafts, argues that no firm demarcation exists between the two movements examined here. In the process, the contributors explore a wide variety of interiors in locations as diverse as London, Cornwall, New England, and Tangiers. Analyzing spaces public and private, sacred and secular, the volume poses several historiographic challenges. Drawing on a wide range of feminist and queer theories, the book questions the identification of nineteenth-century interiors as exclusively female or family spaces. The collection also addresses the complex and temporary character of interiors, and responds to the recent scholarly trend to return questions of feeling and embodied experience to the study of the decorative arts.
