The Fitzpatrick skin phototypes (FSP) were developed in Boston for use with phototherapy. The scale’s original purpose was to help determine a patient’s risk of burning or tanning when exposed to UV light. Fitzpatrick initially based the scale on a person’s skin and eye colour to determine the amount of UV therapy used to treat skin disorders without causing phototoxicity, or irritation from UV light. The current scale classifies skin from types I to VI. Type I refers to skin that always burns, while type VI refers to skin that never burns. · The Fitzpatrick scale was also used to determine the risk of skin cancer from exposure to UV rays. · The scale is also often used to determine the setting on a laser when performing laser hair removal. · It has also been used by medical professionals to assess risk for sunburn and skin cancer. Thus, an effort has been made in this Booklet to precisely present Fitzpatrick skin types, scale’s limitations, and proposed alternatives, a sample questionnaire along with relevant TABLES and ILLUSTRATIONS for better understanding. However, people began to protect themselves against potential overexposure to avoid sunburns. Around 1945, the first sunscreen products became available. The perception regarding the tasks of sunscreen products changed several times – initially it was promoted as a lifestyle product, then as a skin cancer preventive means, and more recently also for anti-aging. Different purposes and the widespread use of these products have led to myriad studies and a wealth of information. In this volume, the editors present a current collection of information analyzing and discussing issues related to sunscreen products and their use. These include challenges regarding the ideal sunscreen product including filter selection and formulation issues, measurement methods, performance characterization, safety, and regulatory issues.
