Book Rodents Mammalia from Fitterer Ranch Brule Formation Oligocene North Dakota

Download or read book Rodents Mammalia from Fitterer Ranch Brule Formation Oligocene North Dakota written by William W. Korth and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eighteen rodent species are recognized from the Fitterer Ranch fauna of North Dakota on the basis of more than a thousand collected specimens. Of the species recognized, four are new: the prosciurine aplodontiids Prosciurus hogansoni and Altasciurus leonardi, the heliscomyid Heliscomys borealis, and the cricetid Eumys lammersi. A previously described castorid from this fauna, Oligotheriomys primus Korth, 1998, is considered a synonym of "Eutypomys" magnus Wood, 1937, on the basis of the recovery of lower dentitions but is retained in the genus Oligotheriomys. A single specimen is questionably referred to Microparamys, a genus elsewhere limited to the Eocene (Clarkforkian-Chadronian land mammal ages). The rodent fauna appears to be a combination of predominantly Orellan and Whitneyan species (early Oligocene), suggesting that the section might transcend the Orellan-Whitneyan boundary. However, the rodent fauna does not alter significantly from the lowest to the highest horizons."--Provided by publisher.

Book Description of New Lissamphibia Fauna from the Brule Formation Oligocene of North Dakota

Download or read book Description of New Lissamphibia Fauna from the Brule Formation Oligocene of North Dakota written by Julie A. Driebergen and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new lissamphibian assemblage from the Fitterer Ranch site (Brule Formation) of North Dakota is described. This assemblage is significant because there are few confirmed, multi-taxic lissamphibian fossil assemblages in North America, even from the extremely well-sampled Brule Formation of South Dakota. Thus, the Fitterer Ranch fauna will increase the known diversity of Oligocene amphibian taxa for the northern Great Plains. The Fitterer Ranch lissamphibian assemblage was described using direct comparison of skeletal elements of previously described fossils and modern herpetofauna. The fauna was also taxonomically compared with two additional, productive lissamphibian assemblages of North America, the Calf Creek site (Cypress Hills Formation, late Eocene) from Saskatchewan, and the I-75 site (Oligocene) from Florida. Fitterer Ranch has a diverse lissamphibian assemblage, with scaphiopid, hylid, ranid, and bufonid species as well as occurances of rhinophrynid and pelodytid anurans. There is also a species of siren and occurences of Ambystoma. The Fitterer Ranch lissamphibian assemblage indicates a forested to grassy transitional environment with taxonomic similarities to both Calf Creek and I-75.

Book Fossil Frogs and Toads of North America

Download or read book Fossil Frogs and Toads of North America written by J. Alan Holman and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart of this book consists of detailed systematic accounts of the known fossil frogs and toads (anurans) of North America and their localities. Extinct fossil frogs and toads are fully discussed and illustrated, and in some cases are re-diagnosed and re-described. For fossil taxa still living, the book gives the modern characteristics, ecological attributes, and modern ranges, and includes illustrations of diagnostic skeletal elements. The volume begins with an overview of the anurans and anuran studies, a general account of the skeleton and bones, and a discussion of the early evolution of the Anura, along with the formal classification of anuran taxonomic groups found in the North American fossil record. The third part of the book presents an epoch-by-epoch discussion of Mesozoic, Tertiary, and Pleistocene anurans, the classification and phylogeny of the anurans, and a comprehensive list of references.

Book Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics written by Harsh Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 1579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few decades have witnessed the growth of the Earth Sciences in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the planet that we live on. This development addresses the challenging endeavor to enrich human lives with the bounties of Nature as well as to preserve the planet for the generations to come. Solid Earth Geophysics aspires to define and quantify the internal structure and processes of the Earth in terms of the principles of physics and forms the intrinsic framework, which other allied disciplines utilize for more specific investigations. The first edition of the Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics was published in 1989 by Van Nostrand Reinhold publishing company. More than two decades later, this new volume, edited by Prof. Harsh K. Gupta, represents a thoroughly revised and expanded reference work. It brings together more than 200 articles covering established and new concepts of Geophysics across the various sub-disciplines such as Gravity, Geodesy, Geomagnetism, Seismology, Seismics, Deep Earth Processes, Plate Tectonics, Thermal Domains, Computational Methods, etc. in a systematic and consistent format and standard. It is an authoritative and current reference source with extraordinary width of scope. It draws its unique strength from the expert contributions of editors and authors across the globe. It is designed to serve as a valuable and cherished source of information for current and future generations of professionals.
