Book A Monetary and Fiscal History of Latin America 1960 2017

Download or read book A Monetary and Fiscal History of Latin America 1960 2017 written by Timothy J. Kehoe and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major, new, and comprehensive look at six decades of macroeconomic policies across the region What went wrong with the economic development of Latin America over the past half-century? Along with periods of poor economic performance, the region’s countries have been plagued by a wide variety of economic crises. This major new work brings together dozens of leading economists to explore the economic performance of the ten largest countries in South America and of Mexico. Together they advance the fundamental hypothesis that, despite different manifestations, these crises all have been the result of poorly designed or poorly implemented fiscal and monetary policies. Each country is treated in its own section of the book, with a lead chapter presenting a comprehensive database of the country’s fiscal, monetary, and economic data from 1960 to 2017. The chapters are drawn from one-day academic conferences—hosted in all but one case, in the focus country—with participants including noted economists and former leading policy makers. Cowritten with Nobel Prize winner Thomas J. Sargent, the editors’ introduction provides a conceptual framework for analyzing fiscal and monetary policy in countries around the world, particularly those less developed. A final chapter draws conclusions and suggests directions for further research. A vital resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of economics and for economic researchers and policy makers, A Monetary and Fiscal History of Latin America, 1960–2017 goes further than any book in stressing both the singularities and the similarities of the economic histories of Latin America’s largest countries. Book The Role of Fiscal Policy in Sustainable Stabilization Evidence from Latin America

Download or read book The Role of Fiscal Policy in Sustainable Stabilization Evidence from Latin America written by Teresa Ter-Minassian and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1997-08 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last ten or so years, Latin American countries have carried out a variety of economic programs aimed at stabilizing their economies. Several of these programs have been extensively analyzed in the literature, with focus on the policy mix adopted in the programs, in particular the balance between orthodox instruments (in particular monetary and fiscal policies) and heterodox ones (i.e., direct government intervention in the wage and price formation processes). So far, relatively less attention has been paid to the specific content of the fiscal component of stabilization programs in Latin America. To be sure, a number of studies have emphasized the importance of credibility and sustainability of the fiscal measures adopted in these programs. There have been, however, few attempts at analyzing the impact that the nature and quality of fiscal adjustment have had on the success or failure of the programs.

Book How Latin America Weathered The Global Financial Crisis

Download or read book How Latin America Weathered The Global Financial Crisis written by José De Gregorio and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-05 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the economy of Latin America responded more positively than Asia, Europe or the United States after being hit by the recent global financial crisis? Three years after the worst of the crisis, Latin America's GDP is 25 percent higher than its precrisis level. José De Gregorio, Governor of the Central Bank of Chile from 2007 to 2011, tells the story of how Latin America has responded to the crisis with a perspective that only an insider can have. De Gregorio focuses on the seven largest economies of the region, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela (90 percent of the region's output). He argues that Latin America was resilient because of good macroeconomic policies, strong financial systems, and "a bit of luck."

Book Finance for Development

Download or read book Finance for Development written by Barbara Stallings and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) publication Access to finance is critical in setting the course for development in emerging market economies. In this innovative study, which provides the first book-length analysis of the Latin American financial sector, Barbara Stallings and Rogerio Studart examine the dramatic changes resulting from financial liberalization in the region. The authors begin by discussing the critical transformations taking place in Latin America since 1990—a period marked by acceleration toward a new open, market-oriented development model, and away from a semi-closed model relying heavily on the state. Stallings and Studart examine changes in ownership of the financial sector and government regulation of banking, evaluate the role of capital markets as a source of finance, and compare Latin America's financial sector to that of East Asia. The second section of the book features case studies that demonstrate the changes occurring in Chile, Mexico, and Brazil with particular reference to finance for investment and access to credit. The authors conclude with a set of policy recommendations aimed at strengthening Latin American banks and capital markets so that they can play a greater role in supporting economic development.
