Book First Year Latin by Correspondence Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Year Latin by Correspondence Classic Reprint written by Ada Townsend and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Year Latin by Correspondence The following Studies are the result of a settled conviction that the teaching of Latin by correspondence is not only possible, but practicable. Many of the difficulties that beset the teaching by correspondence of a modern language, with its attendant necessities of correct accent, idiomatic diction, and rapid comprehension, are absent in the case of a language no longer spoken. Much that hinders the progress of the ordinary pupil in school, such as large classes, and the unequal ability of his classmates, is eliminated from the work of the correspondence student, who progresses at his own rate of speed, all of whose work has the instructor's individual attention, and to whom no inaccuracy is permitted, because his work must be entirely in writing. The present Studies aim to supply, as far as possible, the place of the teacher in oral work, expanding with full explanations the excellent text-book of Professors Collar and Daniell, furnishing much drill on forms, and amplifying the text-book to such proportions as it would take in regular class room work. No attempt has been made to teach deri vation, except in so far as will aid the student's memory in the attainment of a vocabulary. Download or read book Latin for the First Year Classic Reprint written by Walter Balfour Gunnison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin for the First Year As a spoken language Latin never ceased to be used in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, but grew into different forms or dialects, which we now call Italian, French, Span ish, and Portuguese. These national tongues are together called Romance languages, that is, modern forms of the language of the Romans. It 15 of greater importance to us that our English is also very closely related to this historic language. Our words have come from many different sources, but chiefly from anglo-saxon and Latin. It has been said that English gets most of its strength from anglo-saxon and most of its refinement from Latin. The majority of the words in our dictionaries are of Latin origin. Some of these have not changed in form or meaning for two thousand years, as actor, animal, census, color, error, honor, labor, minus, plus, superior, victor. Others have been coined in recent years, as dirigible, incubator, locomotive. This coining of new words from Latin elements still goes on from year to year.
