Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Year Language Reader The Language Readers are based upon the general theory that the work in reading and the work in language should be brought into close relationship. Arguments for this theory are presented in the prefaces to the higher books of the series. The main purpose of the reading work of the first two years must be to learn to read. By the general agreement of experience, nothing so hastens a child's progress as the desire to read and actual practice in reading. His desire to read is, in the first place, aroused by his teacher, and fostered by the pleasure he takes in the work. Not only the skill of the teacher, therefore, but the nature of the reading matter also, enters into the problem. For this reason, the editors and publishers have striven to make these books attractive to children in appearance and substance. There is no absolutely best way of beginning the work. One of the best methods is to engage the pupils in conversation regarding objects which appear early in the book, and then show them that the things which they have said can be said in another way than by speaking, viz. by writing them on the blackboard in script or in print, or in both. Book The Language Readers Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Language Readers Primer Classic Reprint written by Joseph H. Wade and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language Readers Primer The child comes to school at the age of six or seven with a speaking vocabulary of several hundred words, say from five hundred to seven hundred words. This number will vary according to his environment and home influences. In teaching reading to these first year pupils, the aim should be to teach the child to recognize the symbols for the ideas which he already possesses. In other words, the aim is not to enlarge the child's speaking vocabulary but rather to convert it into a reading vocabulary. The child must learn to associate form and sound; the printed symbol must suggest an idea. Furthermore the child must learn to translate these symbols into oral language expressively rendered. If the class be one composed largely of children who speak little or no English, the problem is more complex. The teacher must build up an English vocabulary for the most commonplace actions and ideas, and, at the same time, must associate the spoken words which the pupils are learning day by day with the printed or written symbols. That is, the teacher must teach English speech as well as reading. In this Primer no particular method has been fol lowed absolutely. The aim has been to use the best features of the word, the look and say, the sen tence, the phonic, and the Gouin methods. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives in common use form the basis of the child's reading vocabulary. These should be taught as sight words. As an introduction to the work in reading, such commands as stand, face, etc., which are at first given orally by the teacher, may be written on the board and the children directed to obey them. The first sentences in this Primer direct the performance of certain actions, one purpose being to secure silent reading before oral reading is attempted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Year Language Reader The language reader series is, as the name implies, a set of graded school readers in which one of the definite objects is the teaching of the language as well as the reading of good literature. This purpose has been more fully stated in the prefaces to the advanced numbers. The present volume contains but little besides the reading matter itself. It seems best at this stage of the work not\to complicate the page by the introduction of matter auxiliary to the study. Such assistance should be, and usually is, given by the teacher. It may, therefore, not be amiss to state several objects which the teacher should have in mind in this second year of the work in language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Reader This First Reader is a second book of a basal series, and grades naturally and easily from the Primer. In its preparation great care has been taken to adapt the reading matter to the child's understanding and to awaken and hold his interest. For this reason the sen tenoes are short and clear in thought. Their simplicity will lighten the work of the teacher. Following the plan of the Primer, the use of a limited number of phonograms is emphasized, which, rightly pre sented, will give the child power to recognize quickly each new word. The stories of nature, animal life, home, and coun try are appropriate to the season of the year. They will appeal to the experiences of childhood and develop humane and patriotic feeling. All new words are placed at the beginning of the les sons and repeated as often as possible without sacrificing literary strength. Words from the Primer are freely used, and the Primer vocabulary is introduced at the beginning of this book, that the teacher may use the words for occasional review lessons and language work. Book First Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Reader Classic Reprint written by F. Bertin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Reader Nothing is more natural than that mothers should pride on their children, but they must take care not to wrong them by it. It is a vain satisfaction for mothers to take pride in their children muttering a few sentences of a foreign language. French, for example; Because if these few sentences have been learned, as lessons, after the favorite method of begin ning, as they say, by learning to speak in the first lesson, then it amounts to less than nothing. This may seem a fine beginning, but it may be observed that the pupil will stick xto it and go no farther. They say from the first: avez-oous da pain oui, monsieur, j'ai da pain they say it still at the end, after five or six 'years' study, with the addition of a few more sentences. But as to speaking, or reading, or writing the language studied, they are unable to do it. And people should know that such a knowledge of a foreign language, does not pass the limit of ridicule. However, there are some, it may be said, who having thus began, have succeeded in learning to speak foreign languages. That is true, but if you question them, you will find that they have read and written a great deal, and were they at all conscious of their own progress, they would tell you that they have learned what they know by reading. Then the learning of sentences had been trouble and time lost, two valuable things spoiled. To pretend to learn languages in such or such collections of sentences, be it Ollendorf, Manesca, Fas quelle, etc., is as reasonable as to pretend to drink up the Ocean by drinking a glass of its water. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Carroll and Brooks Readers: A First Reader The order of topics in the first reader follows in a measure the order governing the kindergarten year, which is the universal order in its appeal to the natural interests of children. The early lessons are based upon the child's love of activity and are intended to accompany the sense games of the kindergarten, modified to meet the needs of the primary school. Appropriate to the child's progress there are introduced lessons based upon familiar games and nursery rhymes, which appeal to his dramatic instinct. These lessons afford the richest material for language drill. The words are very simple, and their sound and meaning are already familiar to the child. Moreover, the subjects Offer ample Opportunity for the repetition of the vocabulary without monot ony. It has been an ideal throughout that the lessons should be as varied as possible, the vocabulary carefully limited, and the repetition of new words immediate and frequent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Reading by Grades: First Year The earlier lessons in this book relate to objects which are famil iar to every child and which may be brought into every schoolroom. The transition from things near and well known to things remote and strange is gradual and natural, and parallel with the mental growth of the young learner. In accordance with the method pursued in the majority of the best schools, script is introduced at the same time with the Roman characters. This, besides other advantages, enables the teacher to make very extensive use of the blackboard in connection with each lesson from the book. The lessons are so constructed that, by variations of the different sentences, each one may be largely supplemented from the blackboard without the addition of new or unfamiliar words. The active propensities of the child are constantly recognized, the majority of the lessons being exercises in doing and observing as well as in the recognition of words. Easy and interesting reviews, containing no new words, are given at regular intervals. Connected with some of these reviews are a few simple exercises in language which, being largely suggestive, may be extended and continued at pleasure by the teacher. Book The Howell First Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Howell First Reader Classic Reprint written by Logan Douglass Howell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Howell First Reader All the spellings in the howell primer are repeated in this book; and for any child it is a complete introduction to reading in the English language. When he masters the howell first reader, he can read anything he may have occasion to read. For the beginner in this series does more than learn mere words; he learns the spelling ele ments, and thus becomes an independent reader. This book begins with the spellings taught in the howell primer; pages 9 - 20 contain nothing new in the way of spelling to the child that has mastered the Primer, though some new words are met with here. The method is the same as that of the Primer only one new spelling element is taught at a time thus the grading is regular and easy. Without taking too much space for a discussion of methods of teaching (which would be unfair to the purchasers of a book for children), the author would urge teachers to see that their pupils learn the word lists; review them often; a mastery of them will give pupils power to read not only this book, but any other book. Do not however, require beginners to learn by heart the spelling of all these words if elementary pupils can read them easily, that is enough to expect. A manual on the teaching of elementary reading, with special application to the howell primer and the howell first reader, is in preparation. Book The Revised Insular First Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revised Insular First Reader Classic Reprint written by David Gibbs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revised Insular First Reader IN this book the child is taught to read, write and talk in English upon familiar topics of his daily life, -to read and to express thoughts about the things which are of most interest to him. The vocabulary includes that of the Primer and the most important ideas concerning playing, going to school, eating, sleeping, visiting, day and night, buying and selling, in the market, at home, at school, etc. This use of familiar and interesting ideas not only makes the teaching and learning of the English language far easier, but also encourages its use independently by the pupil. Speaking and writing form parts of each lesson. The forms of the lessons distinctly encourage the speaking of English. New words are learned in connection with the thoughts which they must be used to express. This is very important. Further, the use of new words in writing is strongly emphasized. The book contains an unusual amount of script. New words are either introduced in script or are used in script in statements, which form the basis for further written work. The uses and many inflections of the parts of speech, the tenses of the verb, the use and comparison of adjectives and adverbs, the more important prepositions, interrogative and personal pronouns, the various kinds of sentences, the use of simple adjective and adverbial clauses, receive special consideration in the text. By phonetic classifications of the words and by special exercises, phonics are gradually introduced and developed. Drawing and games, which are valuable helps in the teaching of English, are given due attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Mother Goose rhymes, which were so freely used in the primer, are made the connecting link with the higher work, the simple folk myths and the other stories that make their appeal to the child six or seven years old. While the language has to be limited to the exigencies of a comparatively small but growing vocab ulary, an endeavor has been made to preserve the lit crary avor of folk narration. Such arrangement will train pupils to use the reference lists as they use their dictionaries. These accounts should be utilized consistently. In many instances they present something of the romance of the author's life. The story of the struggles, ambitions, and successes of a writer often awakens in the pupil an interest which cannot fail to lead to the reading of other books by the same author. Book Thought and Expression

Download or read book Thought and Expression written by Samuel S. Greene and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thought and Expression: Or the Child's First Book Written Language Most of our children leave school with little or no practical training in the art of expressing their thoughts with the pen. And such are our methods that most of the remainder will be kept back by a life-long dread of putting their thoughts on paper. Their power of expression by writing is fettered and we fail to set it free. True, many learn a school penmanship and a school reading, or in the technical sense "learn to read and write." But, whatever may be said of the reading, the writing is not introduced with any immediate reference to thought, but as an art of itself. It is usually begun some time after the child has learned to read and spell; it is then taught as the art of making letters and putting them together, not as the art of expressing thought. Hence it takes on that peculiar style which the taste of the teacher or the rules of the art may determine. It is totally unlike that which the muscles form when under the influence of thought - that which gives a personal character to the hand-writing. This procedure is equally at variance with nature in calling forth muscular action in speech. The muscles begin to act under the impulse of thought, and under the same influence they are exercised and trained. Every child thus acquires his distinctive habit of speaking. There is nothing in the nature of the two cases to occasion this difference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
