Book Hazardous Materials Incidents

Download or read book Hazardous Materials Incidents written by Steven M. DeLisi and published by PennWell Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First responders who arrive on scene of a hazardous materials incident may be assigned to an engine, ladder truck, rescue, or ambulance with very little sophisticated HAZMAT equipment. Despite these limitations, their actions during the initial response will often set the stage for the success or failure of the entire event. Many incidents start out as minor "routine" events that suddenly escalate when something goes terribly wrong. Perhaps first responders did not anticipate the involvement of hazardous materials in a response to a rear-end collision involving two passenger vehicles, an EMS call at a residence for difficulty breathing, or a trash fire. That is until it was too late! First responders, despite their best intentions, can quickly become part of any hazardous materials problem. The results can be first responders who are killed or seriously injured, or those who suffer devastating illnesses years after exposure to a hazardous material. Even if you have hours of training on hazardous materials response, this book will provide every reader with... - Practical advice based on the real-life experiences of first responders - A one-stop source on topics such as atmospheric monitors and class B foam - Steps to managing "routine" incidents to prevent them from becoming disasters - Limitations of federal hazardous materials regulations you need to know - Real-world examples of first responders who won (or lost) the battle with hazardous materials

Book Police Analysis and Planning for Homicide Bombings

Download or read book Police Analysis and Planning for Homicide Bombings written by Ellis John and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2007 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police Analysis and Planning for Homicide Bombings is oriented toward planning police operations in the public sector, but will be usable by other public officials as well as by some military and private sector police operations. It addresses police threat assessment of, vulnerability assessment to, defense against and response to attacks by homicide bombs. It begins with an essay on the distinctions between military and police operations and includes an examination of the U.S. counter terrorist policy and structure, assessment of explosive weapons of mass destruction and the terrorist ability to make and use them, the legal limitations of police response operations in the United States, and defensive response to this form of attack. It concludes with commentary on actions that may be needed if this threat continues to develop in the United States. Relying upon both experience and research, the author has synthesized the varied military, law enforcement and private security approaches into a detailed analysis of the threat posed by terrorist use of homicide bombs and the necessary internal response. With the first-hand experience of applying the knowledge in an actual threat environment, the combination of historical perspective and reality confrontation produces an effective examination of the topic for the police administrator and emergency planner.

Download or read book The First Responders written by Anthea Appel and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of September 11th 2001, two hijacked jetliners crashed into the Twin Towers. Within minutes of the attack, 36 Emergency Service Unit cops of the NYPD responded to the scene. They divided into six Teams. The first five Teams entered the Towers, and the sixth Team headed for the helicopters to attempt a daring air rescue. 14 of them would not survive. For the first time, here are the details of what the Emergency Service Unit teams did and saw as they climbed the burning Towers. Burden down with heavy equipment they searched for terrorist "sleepers," and survivors. Then the first Tower collapsed. Fearing that a second collapse was imminent, the firefighters and the police were ordered to evacuate. Now, the countdown began. In the harrowing final minutes, the police teams encountered everything from the absurd---including, the arrest of a mysterious man in the North Tower---to terrifying close calls. As the second Tower fell, tensions flared, bonds are formed, friends are lost, and tough and street-wise cops learn the true meaning of duty and heroism. In this book, other stories from the NYPD include the rescue of two Port Authority cops, P.O. Will Jimeno and Sgt. John McLoughlin, who were buried under the collapse of the South Tower; the first flag raising, and the nine-month search and rescue?and the recovery?at Ground Zero. These important and powerful stories have never been told...until now.

Book Crime Scene Processing in the Correctional Setting

Download or read book Crime Scene Processing in the Correctional Setting written by David Doglietto and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no more challenging a crime scene than that found in the custodial setting. Unlike on the streets where a first responder, or pair of responders, can take command of an incident quickly to preserve the integrity of the scene and the evidence it contains, the crime scene investigator in a jail or prison is not so fortunate. The jail or prison crime scene investigator will naturally be faced with a crime scene that is already contaminated, either by the routine and constant trudging of a confined inmate population or by the efforts of staff to restore order. Thus, the discovery of DNA from any one incarcerated individual is not as compelling to the event as it would be in the general public. Furthermore, custodial officials rely on the philosophy of “overwhelm and suppress” to control inmate disturbances. Therefore, the investigator will have to deal with an abundance of staff stuffed into a compact area of forensic importance. In the custodial setting, the focus of correctional staff is the prompt restoration of order with little concern for the evidence that the crime scene may contain. Crime Scene Processing in the Correctional Setting is a practical guide for sheriffs, wardens, superintendents, correctional investigative personnel, correctional officers, and deputies that is written in a manner that is easy to understand and by someone who faced the challenges of processing crime scenes in the correctional setting.

Book Residential Fire Safety

Download or read book Residential Fire Safety written by Marcus Runefors and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-27 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of deaths and injuries from residential fires as well as the most up to date information on evidence-based approaches to reduce this problem. The volume serves as a guide for professionals working in the field of fire prevention and as a textbook for instruction in universities and fire service schools. The authors’ interdisciplinary approach, where public health methodology is combined with fire protection engineering, medicine, and policy science, is quite distinctive outside of the technical literature devoted to larger scale fire events. Traditional textbooks on fire protection tend to describe the problem as purely technical, whereas in essence it is a problem of human vulnerability. In this book, readers will find lucid and rigorous descriptions of various risk groups and effective preventive measures that are effective, both in general and with respect to the different risk groups. They will also find work processes to facilitate risk reduction. Summarizing state-of-the-art knowledge and giving guidance for the future, both in terms of preventive efforts and ongoing research, Residential Fire Safety: An Interdisciplinary Approach, is ideal for students, educators, and practitioners of residential fire protection.
