Book First Timers Guide on How to Survive in New York State Prison

Download or read book First Timers Guide on How to Survive in New York State Prison written by Kemp "Zac" McCoy and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They say that life is what you make it, and this saying is truly applicable to prison as well as life. Not to put anyone down, most of us go throughout our lives not caring about anything or anyone. The only thing that can awaken someone who has taken everything and everyone for granted is for that someone to lose what it was that someone had. Then, and only then, can that someone learn to appreciate the blessings they had been given. Thus, when first contemplating the drafting of this book, the question that arose in my mind was not, who would be my intended audience, but what is it that I could possibly give to the audience that this book is intended for? That question was quickly answered after reflecting on the past maybe ten years or beyond, as well as recently, through the media watching how many public figures and celebrities are coming to prison for the first time. It is a good read not just for young people but of all ages. Each person that reads this book will come away with a different outlook on life, values and what being free means.

Book My Time Will Come

Download or read book My Time Will Come written by Ian Manuel and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring story of activist and poet Ian Manuel, who at the age of fourteen was sentenced to life in prison. He survived eighteen years in solitary confinement—through his own determination and dedication to art—until he was freed as part of an incredible crusade by the Equal Justice Initiative. “Ian is magic. His story is difficult and heartbreaking, but he takes us places we need to go to understand why we must do better. He survives by relying on a poetic spirit, an unrelenting desire to succeed, to recover, and to love. Ian’s story says something hopeful about our future.” —Bryan Stevenson, author of Just Mercy The United States is the only country in the world that sentences thirteen- and fourteen-year-old offenders, mostly youth of color, to life in prison without parole. In 1991, Ian Manuel, then fourteen, was sentenced to life without parole for a non-homicide crime. In a botched mugging attempt with some older boys, he shot a young white mother of two in the face. But as Bryan Stevenson, attorney and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, has insisted, none of us should be judged by only the worst thing we have ever done. Capturing the fullness of his humanity, here is Manuel’s powerful testimony of growing up homeless in a neighborhood riddled with poverty, gang violence, and drug abuse—and of his efforts to rise above his circumstances, only to find himself, partly through his own actions, imprisoned for two-thirds of his life, eighteen years of which were spent in solitary confinement. Here is the story of how he endured the savagery of the United States prison system, and how his victim, an extraordinary woman, forgave him and bravely advocated for his freedom, which was achieved by an Equal Justice Initiative push to address the barbarism of our judicial system and bring about “just mercy.” Full of unexpected twists and turns as it describes a struggle for redemption, My Time Will Come is a paean to the capacity of the human will to transcend adversity through determination and art—in Ian Manuel’s case, through his dedication to writing poetry.

Book excerpt: The definitive guide to surviving incarceration in a federal prison. Federal Prison Handbook teaches individuals facing incarceration, prisoners who are already inside, and their friends and family everything they need to know to protect themselves and their rights. The thorough information has been compiled by an advocate currently serving time at a federal prison. His insider's view of this unknown world guides inmates through the mental stresses of confinement. Equally as important, he keeps readers physically safe by explaining how to avoid the near-constant conflicts found inside federal prisons. In detailed chapters broken down by topical areas, readers discover: * What to expect during admissions and how to greet cellmates for the first time. * How to communicate with the outside world through telephones, computers, and mail. * What types of items can be purchased from the official commissary and the underground economy. * The best ways to avoid fights, and the options that provide the greatest protection if a fight cannot be avoided. * The knowledge required to avoid scams, schemes, theft, and other problems. * What to do about sexual harassment or assault. * The types of jobs available and their pay grades. * Medical and psychological services. * Religious activities and services. * Entertainment, recreation, and keeping fit. * And much more. Importantly, this text provides detailed instructions on how prisoners can protect their rights. The author is a college-educated prisoner who has fought extensively to preserve his rights and the rights of other prisoners. Incarceration can be cruel for prisoners and their loved ones. Know what to expect and make the best of this time by staying safe, remaining safe, and building a life behind bars.

In his twenty-one year career with New York City's Department of Correction he helped prevent stabbings from escalating, negotiated with rioting inmates, and foiled an escape attempt from maximum security. He helped prisoners air legitimate grievances, successfully oversaw the Black Panther inmate population, and arranged for major entertainers to visit and perform for inmates. Caldwood survived-even thrived-in his dangerous job by learning from his mistakes and moving on, while giving and getting respect from both inmates and prison personnel. He didn't always make the right moves, but he tried. And in doing so, he navigated one of the most dangerous prisons in America.
