Learning how to use the aperture and shutter speeds on a camera is what allows the shooter to control the artistic and technical outcome of a picture. You see those gorgeous photos of sunsets over the ocean or fireworks in the night sky, but when you attempt to take those same pictures, they come out dull, underexposed, and flat looking. The reason they do is that to capture those types of pictures, you need to know how to use the aperture and shutter speed. For example, did you know that when you're shooting a sunset photo of a landscape, you need a wide aperture and a long shutter speed? It means the aperture must be open wide so that everything is captured in focus. And the shutter speed must be slow enough to allow extra light in, to fully absorb the broad spectrum of colors. And if you don't do those two things on a camera, dull, drab images will be what you get. Of course, getting great photos of sunsets isn't the only reason to learn DSLR photography. Taking close-up images of family and friends with a soft, out-of-focus background and perfect lighting is another big reason.
