This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Quarto-Centennial History of the State Normal and Training School, Potsdam, N. Y., 1869-1894 The rapid progress of the Normal idea in America, is worthy of especial mention when contrasted with the slow development of the same idea in the Old World. In less than a quarter of a century after the first agitation of the question in this country, the first Normal school in America was Opened in 1839 at Lexington, Mass, (now Framingham, Mass.) with Mr. Cyrus Peirce, the Arnold of America, at the head. Without doubt the establish ment of professional schools in Europe, especially the Prussian system, had much to do with accelerating the work in America, but great credit should be given these early pioneers who with feeble beginnings, and with meager appointments, were able to give such impetus to the work in the New World, for the evidence seems conclusive that the originators of the movement in America, Mr. Olmstead Mr. Hall Mr. Gal landet and others, conceived the idea from their own observations of the needs of their schools. In 1834 Rev. Charles Brooks (hingham, Mass.) after thorough ly acquainting himself with the Prussian system resolved to do something about State Normal Schools. To the untiring labors of this man, more than any other agency, is probably due the particular form of Normal school training in this country, viz: that the true function of the Normal school consists in pedagogical instruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketches Relating to the First Quarter Century of the State Normal and Training School In this respect, we feel confident that great changes for the better are yet to be made, especially in the lower grades of our schools. Something, it is true, is now being done in this direction, and teachers in these departments have regular and daily exercises in object lessons; but for want of proper facilities much less is ac complished than could be desired. We trust that by the intro duction of proper text books as guides and models, as also charts, pictures, drawing and other aids, we may see advancement made in this direction from year to year, until brought to a high degree of perfection. Book Records of the First Class of the First State Normal School in America

Download or read book Records of the First Class of the First State Normal School in America written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the First Class of the First State Normal School in America: Established at Lexington, Massachusetts, 1839 Sketches of the beginning and early history of the first State Normal School in this country, established at Lexington, Mass., July, 1839, having been published in connection with the quarter-centennial and semi-centennial memorials of the school, we confine ourselves in this volume to the story of its "First Class," as told in the records kept by the members from year to year for their annual meetings. It was the custom adopted at the first to appoint one of the number to prepare an address for the following meeting, the topic being left to her own choice. She became the guardian of the Record Book, and was expected to copy her address into it. Thus the manuscript became a book of many authors. After the lapse of more than half a century, in which it has doubled its original number of pages, its value as a record of historical and educational events has been increasingly appreciated. The few surviving members of the Class whose story it tells noticed with much regret that some of its most valuable pages were becoming illegible from the fading of the ink. Anxiety lest the entire record he lost was relieved by an offer from one of their number to defray the expense of printing an edition for private distribution among the original members and their descendants. To this generosity the appearance of the book in its present form is due, and the enjoyment of its permanent possession is thereby made possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures: I, History of the Introduction of State Normal Schools in America, II, a Prospective System of National Education for the United States Mr. President, - I am called to a position which I have tried to avoid. For more than a quarter of a century, I have kept profound silence concerning my connection with the introduction of the present system of State Normal Schools in New England, and should have kept silence to the end, had not this noble, patriotic, and Christian celebration induced some friends to tempt me to break that silence; averring it injustice to withhold the facts. It happens that I alone possess all the historical documents; and I have used them in writing a history of 168 pages concerning the public movements in 1835-8, not for publication, but as a legacy to my children. I have carefully preserved in one large quarto volume all the manuscript documentary evidence, and in a folio all the printed evidence, of the facts I have stated; carefully noting dates and places. Now, can you imagine any thing more ridiculous and contradictory than for a living man to stand up here, and read his posthumous histories? Has God opened a seam in the dark cloud of the grave, that he may send one ray of light to increase the full-orbed joy of this sacred occasion? I proposed to your committee of arrangements to have my excellent friend, the Hon. Henry Barnard of Hartford, who has done more for general education than any man on this continent, or your accomplished "historian," the Rev. Mr. Stearns, state the facts I should furnish; but the answer was in these words: "It would seem better that we should have the statements directly from yourself, and not through another as the medium of communication." So I submitted; and, without angling any longer for sympathy, I must say, that to the Prussian system of State Normal Schools belongs the distinctive glory of this day. To prove this, I must trace its history in New England. The Prussian system is my client; and I shall submit my case, too briefly, to this intelligent and impartial jury. Book Searching the Heavens and the Earth

Download or read book Searching the Heavens and the Earth written by Agustin UDIAS and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesuits established a large number of astronomical, geophysical and meteorological observatories during the 17th and 18th centuries and again during the 19th and 20th centuries throughout the world. The history of these observatories has never been published in a complete form. Many early European astronomical observatories were established in Jesuit colleges. During the 17th and 18th centuries Jesuits were the first western scientists to enter into contact with China and India. It was through them that western astronomy was first introduced in these countries. They made early astronomical observations in India and China and they directed for 150 years the Imperial Observatory of Beijing. In the 19th and 20th centuries a new set of observatories were established. Besides astronomy these now included meteorology and geophysics. Jesuits established some of the earliest observatories in Africa, South America and the Far East. Jesuit observatories constitute an often forgotten chapter of the history of these sciences.
