Book 137 Ba Double Gamma Decay Measurement with GAMMASPHERE

Download or read book 137 Ba Double Gamma Decay Measurement with GAMMASPHERE written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the electromagnetic moments (EM), and decay probability, provides detailed information about nuclear wave functions. The well-know properties of EM interactions are good for extracting information about the motion of nucleons. Higher order EM processes always occur, but are usually too weak to be measured. In the case of a 0+ → 0+ transitions, where a single gamma transition is forbidden, the simultaneous emission of two [gamma]-rays has been studied. An interesting opportunity to further investigate 2-photon emission phenomena is by using a standard 137Cs source populating, via [beta]-decay, the J[pi] = 11/2- isomeric state at 662 keV in 137Ba. In this case, two photon process can have contributions from quadrupole-quadrupole or dipole-octupole multipolarities in direct competition with the high multipolarity M4 decay. Since the yield of the double gamma decay is around six orders of magnitude less than the first order transition, very good statistics are needed in order to observe the phenomena and great care must be taken to suppress the first-order decay. The Gammasphere array is ideal since its configuration allows a good coverage of the angular distribution and the Compton events can be suppressed. Nevertheless the process to understand and eliminate the Compton background is a challenge. Geant4 simulations were carried out to help understand and correct for those factors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of antimatter in the early 1930s posed a new puzzle: at some point in the past, the universe contained equal amounts of matter and antimatter, which should have annihilated each other completely. However, the existence of galaxies, planets, and our own bodies demonstrates that some of the matter survived this primordial annihilation, while the antimatter did not. This indicates that there must be a small matter-antimatter asymmetry in the laws of physics. Understanding these laws involves measuring the parameters governing them. The best way to measure a matter-antimatter asymmetry parameter called gamma is with particular radioactive decays of short-lived particles created in dedicated particle accelerators. This thesis describes the 1998 discovery of these decays, which constituted the first step toward the subsequent measurement of gamma. The thesis opens with a layperson-friendly introduction, using a simple analogy between particle physics and poetry. With this basic understanding at hand, the reader is led through the details of the measurement and its hi-tech apparatus, obtaining an insider's view of how cutting-edge particles-physics experiments are performed

Book Biomimetic Radical Chemistry and Applications

Download or read book Biomimetic Radical Chemistry and Applications written by Chryssostomos Chatgilialoglu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enormous importance of free radical chemistry for a variety of biological events, including ageing and inflammation, has attracted a strong interest in understanding the related mechanistic steps at the molecular level. Modelling the free radical chemical reactivity of biological systems is an important research area. When studying free-radical-based chemical mechanisms, biomimetic chemistry and the design of established biomimetic models come into play to perform experiments in a controlled environment that is suitably designed to be in strict connection with cellular conditions. This Special Issue gives the reader a wide overview of biomimetic radical chemistry, where molecular mechanisms have been defined and molecular libraries of products are developed to also be used as traces for the discovery of some relevant biological processes. Several subjects are presented, with 12 articles and 6 reviews written by specialists in the fields of DNA, proteins, lipids, biotechnological applications, and bioinspired synthesis, having “free radicals” as a common denominator.
