Book Speech Training in the School Classic Reprint

Download or read book Speech Training in the School Classic Reprint written by Marjorie Gullan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speech Training in the School I shall endeavour in this book to indicate the various points to which we must pay attention in our Speech Game, taking each in the order which I consider most helpful. I shall, moreover, hope to present lessons, which, by the introduction of slight changes here and there, may be applied to pupils of various ages. The main faults which we observe in the speech of adults and children in this country are: 1. Poor quality and quantity of tone. 2. Mis-shapen and badly pronounced vowels. 3. Thick, muffled utterance. 4. Lack of muscular activity of lips, tongue and jaw. Now, if we look into the matter, we shall realise that to remedy the first fault we must achieve good breathing capacity and control, and the power to use our resonators correctly. To cure the second fault, it is obvious that the teacher must be able both to teach and to illustrate by her own speech the right shaping and the correct pronunciation of English vowels and diphthongs. Book Better Speech

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Speech: A Textbook of Speech Training for Secondary Schools The book tries to tell a straight-away story on the theme, The way to improve speech is to understand it and make a conscious efiort to improve speech habi Yet the logical order of this story does not necessarily indicate the best order for carrying on class instructions. Teachers should not feel bound to follow the order in which the chapters are writ ten; the best way to use the book is to mark out a course for a given class, using such parts as serve the special needs and purposes of the particular situation. The following is suggested as a workable four-year schedule first year: Chapter I, Good Speech; Chapter II, The Nature of Speech; Chapter VI, Thinking for Speech; Chapter III, Mastering the Whole Body for Speech. Second year Review Chapters I, II, III, and VI, adding Chapter IV, The Voice in Speech, and Chapter V, Using Language in Speech. Third year: Review Chapters I, II, III, IV, V, VI, adding Chapter VII, Conversation, Chapter VIII, Pub lic Speaking, Chapter IX, Reading. Fourth year: Re view Chapters VIII and IX, and apply them to the project work of debating and play production, using the materials of Appendices A and B and of Appendix C. Book A Manual of Exercises for the Correction of Speech Disorders Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Exercises for the Correction of Speech Disorders Classic Reprint written by May Kirk Scripture and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Exercises for the Correction of Speech Disorders We, who speak the English language, can no longer be reproached for our inattention to the subject of speech disorders; for not only during the past year have the Boards of Education in many large cities made the much needed advanced step of appointing Directors of Speech Improvement in the Public Schools, but all over the country numerous other authorities in Speech and Music have already started movements along the lines of diction. Picked teachers are being sent to the speech experts to study their methods in this field, and to carry back this special knowledge to the various school systems. This movement deserves the highest commendation, for should not the "glory of the English tongue" be upheld? Refinement of dress, of person, is always desirable; ideas of cleanliness and neatness are more and more respected. Young men spend much thought on the shape of their collars and the shade of their ties, and young women on the thousand and one little things that go to make up an attractive appearance; but are they always so particular about the shapes and shades of their vowels or consonants, that their speech may be as attractive as their persons? Slovenly language should no more be accepted than slovenly manners. It has long been recognized that the average American voice is shrill and the speech careless compared to the voice and speech of an Englishman. Book A Language Series

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Language Series: Book One AT the beginning of their school life, children have more or less ability to tell what they know. The English that they use in talking may not be very good, and usually they are not able to write it at all. During the first three years at school, however, they improve in speech, and learn also how to express their thoughts, in a simple way, in writing. During this period of the child's life, a large preportion of time should be, and usually is, given to cultivating the power of observation by the study of plants, animals, and other natural objects that may be obtained in the vicinity of the school.
