My friend Mr. Lawson, late Professor of Botany at Oxford, was so good as to give me his assistance. We had the use of Professor Huxley's convenient and well-appointed laboratory, and we determined to attempt a course of instruction which should embrace the leading morphological facts of every important type in the vegetable kingdom. We, in fact, resolved to adopt exactly the same plan of work as Professor Huxley in his own teaching had found convenient for the animal side of morphology. It is one of the anomalies of our educational system that the study of plants, if provided for at all, should be confined mainly to city schools, where it is necessarily carried on under disadvantageous conditions, while it is almost entirely neglected in the country, where the great laboratory of nature stands invitingly open at every schoolhouse door. The writer believes that this neglect is largely due to the want of a text-book suited to general use, in which the subject is treated in a manner at once simple, practical, and scientific. It is with a desire to meet this need and to encourage a more general adoption of botanical studies in the public schools that the present work has been undertaken. It aims, in the first place, to lead the pupil to nature for the objects of each lesson; and in the second place, to provide that the proper material shall be always available by so arranging the lessons that each subject will be taken up at just the time of the year when the material for it is most abundant. In this way the study can be carried on all the year round, a plan which will be found much better than crowding the whole course into a few weeks of the spring term. It is divisible into three sections, namely, (1) Histology - Chapters I. to III., (2) Physiology - Chapters IV. to VII., and (3) Life Histories - Chapters VIII. to XII. In the first section (Histology), I have exercised special care in giving clear and practical directions for microscopic work. Chapter I. is devoted to this purpose and to general instructions regarding the fixation and preservation of material, the cutting of sections, the application of reagents, and other practical matters. In Chapter II. I have worked out a plan which has proved thoroughly satisfactory in practice. In my opinion, no candidate should be allowed to pass in Botany at such examinations as the Intermediate Science and Arts of London University unless able to produce satisfactory proof of having worked through a practical course in Organic Chemistry. Until examining bodies insist upon this, the teacher of Botany must include in his course a few lessons on the Biochemistry of plants. The student ought to know something more about proteins, for instance, than that they contain nitrogen and are coloured brown by iodine solution!
