Book A Smaller History of Greece

Download or read book A Smaller History of Greece written by William Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Smaller History of Greece: From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest is intended to be an introduction to Greek history appropriate for students on the high school level. The book is divided into twenty-two chapters and provides a fairly broad and all-encompassing dissection of Greek history. The first chapter details the geography of Greece and includes a number of maps to serve as a visual aide to students. From there, the book takes a chronological approach to telling the history of Greece. The book begins its history in 776 BCE, telling the story of the development of language and writing in Greece. The book proceeds through Greece's history, offering short chapters on many of the most significant events in the history of the Mediterranean nation, from The Persian Wars to the supremacy of Sparta to the death of Alexander the Great and Rome's conquest of Greece. Those unfamiliar with Greek history will surely appreciate the survey approach adopted by Smith in the writing of this textbook. There are no castes. The nobles are those who are the strongest and most active, the bravest, the most eloquent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Greece, From the Earliest Times to the End of the Persian War, Vol. 1 Considerations of this kind, which must assert themselves at every stage of all historical work, and with pretty nearly equal force, I have finally decided to disregard. Sufficient care is taken that enquiry and criticism shall proceed from one conclusion to another without cessation of their labour: yet. For the basis of science, each of the two factors is equally indispensable if we need to sift the materials in order to establish the facts, we need also to under stand and think of them in combination. It is the interaction of these two factors which discloses the hidden secret; for not only does the whole exist in and through the parts, but from the whole the parts receive their life and light. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Period to the End of the Persian War The purely mythical traditions of the Hellenic tribes I have noticed only in so far as they bear on the life and culture of the people. That they are not history, nor quarries out of which we may dig history, I have sought to show in my volumes on the Mythology Of the Aryan Nations and it seemed to me unnecessary to give again a summary of narratives which I had minutely examined elsewhere. Download or read book A History of Greece Vol 1 of 4 written by George Grote and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 1 of 4: From the Earliest Period to the Close of the Generation Contemporary With Alexander the Great It is that general picture which an historian of Greece is required first to embody in his own mind, and next to lay out before his readers - a picture not merely such as to delight the imagination by brilliancy of coloring and depth of sentiment, but also suggestive and improving to the reason. Not omitting the points of resemblance as well as of contrast with the better-known forms of modern society, he will especially study to exhibit the Spontaneous movement of Grecian intellect, sometimes aided but never borrowed from without, and lighting upa small portion of a world otherwise clouded and stationary. He will develop the action of that social system, which, while insuring to the mass of freemen a degree of protection else where unknown, acted as a stimulus to the creative impulses of genius, and left the superior minds sufficiently unshackled to soar above religious and political routine, to overshoot their own age, and to become the teachers of posterity. Book A History of Greece From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Greece From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest Classic Reprint written by R. W. Browne and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest It has been thought advisable frequently to omit details and events of minor importance altogether, in order that room might be given for bringing forward more prominently those which have exercised an in uence upon the world at large, and have taught grave political lessons to all generations. Some few of the political and social phases which the Hellenic communities went through, the author has ventured to illustrate by a reference to events of more modern times, and ideas familiar to modern readers. A few biographical anecdotes have been here and there interspersed in order to render the drier details of history more interesting to the young, for whose use more especially this little work is intended, but a selection has been made of those which are the best authenticated. The literary history necessarily occupies but a brief portion of the volume, but sufficient, it is hoped, to make the reader in some degree acquainted with the progress and development of Greek intellect, and to induce him to pursue the subject further in larger works. The View of Greek philosophy is of course still Shorter and more incomplete, but a longer notice would have involved the necessity of entering upon difficulties too great for such a work as this, and it is hoped that enough has been said on this subject to Show how the wisest of men had to feel after God. Book History of Greece Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Greece Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Evelyn Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Greece, Vol. 1 Though we can add nothing to the existing records of Greek History, the estimate placed upon their value, and the conclusions drawn from them are constantly changing, and for this reason the story which has been told so often will be told anew from time to time, so long as it continues to have an interest for mankind - that is, let us hope, so long as mankind continue to exist. The present work is intended for readers who are acquainted with the outlines of the subject, and have some knowledge of the Greek language. It has been written in the belief that an intelligible sketch of Greek civilisation may be given within' a brief compass - not with the h0pe of throwing new light on 01d obscurities, or quoting fresh evidence where all the evidence has been long ago collected. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece From the Earliest Times to the Present, Vol. 1 of 2 There remains for me the pleasant duty of tendering my warmest thanks to my friend and associate in the New York School of Languages, Professor Henry C. Miller, to whom I am indebted for many valuable suggestions and criticisms. The difficulties which beset the historian in treating a subject so vast as the fortunes of the Hellenic nation, coupled with the obstacles which a foreigner, however much he may admire the beauty and manliness of English expres sion, must unavoidably meet in conveying his thoughts in a language not his own, may to a certain extent explain the reasons on account of which the author, after years of earnest labor, has fallen short of the lofty ideal he has aimed at the graphic representation of Hellenism from its earliest stage to the present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 1 of 2 Tas plan of the little work begun in this volume has been considerably enlarged since it was first undertaken, and the author fears that a critical eye may be able to detect some traces of this variation from the original de siguin the manner of treating one or two subjects. He would be glad if he might believe that this was its chief defect. But he is most desirous that the object which he has had in view should be understood.
