Book excerpt: Our Brain Book is an engaging, approachable book that helps children and adults understand how their brains work as we humans interact. Social Emotional Learning concepts and human emotions are sometimes difficult to understand and apply. Our Brain Book helps take away some of this mystery with fun, anatomy-based science. Through the tremendous hard work of pioneering researchers and educational leaders, Social Emotional Learning tenants have entered the mainstream culture and have become an important pillar for most all educational facilities. Adlerian constructs, authoritative leadership, and classroom leadership tools have been proven for student growth. Our Brain Book was developed for students, teachers, principals, parents to help provide approachable, easy-to-understand connection between the physiological brain science to the emotional experience of human communication and connection. It helps the child (and any human) understand the science of their feelings and actions while explaining to the leader, teacher, or parent how to help with co-regulation. It creates a common understanding and framework to discuss our interactions and reactions, and how to make them more positive and productive. We hope it helps every person and their community in our collective desires to self-regulate and be our better self in stressful situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education policies have too often ignored how conditions outside of school can alter life chances for young people, especially students of color, before they even reach the classroom. More recently, COVID-19 has made it impossible to overlook the needs of the whole child, both inside and outside of school. The authors assert that responding to a number of factors like air quality, housing, public health, community safety, segregation, and neighborhood conditions are essential to improving academic outcomes and student health. Our Children Can't Wait urges readers to reconsider what education policy is, what it could be, who it is for, and who should be directly shaping it at all levels of government. Experts present a new equity roadmap by bridging scholarship, ideas, and original thinking on education policy as a vehicle for setting a redemptive path forward for reckoning with race in America. Book Features: Presents a new, evidence-based blueprint for addressing persistent gaps in education opportunity through a number of interrelated social policies. Includes contributing authors from 17 organizations and universities, representing a powerful national network of scholars. Goes beyond diagnosing or identifying challenges to present solutions in the form of tools and promising models. Offers strategies for preventing more students from experiencing homelessness or entering the criminal justice system through strategic investments. Addresses timely issues that are in the hearts and minds of many key stakeholders in no small part due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Book COVID 19 and the Classroom

Download or read book COVID 19 and the Classroom written by David T. Marshall and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COVID-19 and the Classroom: How Schools Navigated the Great Disruption presents social science research that explores how schools navigated the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic from March 2020 through the 2020-21 school year. This book also serves as a history book, documenting what this period was like for those involved in the enterprise of educating children. The book is divided into three sections, allowing for an in-depth exploration of the pandemic’s impact. The first section examines how teachers, parents, and school leaders experienced the pandemic, including what this looked like when schools first closed for in-person instruction. Part two explores how schools reopened, both in the United States and abroad, and discusses the trade-offs associated with these decisions. This section also explored how private schools fared and the rise of “pandemic pods”. The book concludes with a look at how a range of teacher preparation programs continued their work in uncertain times. This volume represents one of the first to share scholarship on how schools negotiated the COVID-19 crisis.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Media Education Futures Post Pandemic

This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook showcases how educators and practitioners around the world adapted their routine media pedagogies to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which often led to significant social, economic, and cultural hardships. Combining an innovative mix of traditional chapters, autoethnography, case studies, and dialogue within an intercultural framework, the handbook focuses on the future of media education and provides a deeper understanding of the challenges and affordances of media education as we move forward. Topics range from fighting disinformation, how vulnerable communities coped with disadvantages using media, transforming educational TV or YouTube to reach larger audiences, supporting students’ wellbeing through various online strategies, examining early childhood, parents, and media mentoring using digital tools, reflecting on educators’ intersectionality on video platforms, youth-produced media to fight injustice, teaching remotely and providing low-tech solutions to address the digital divide, search for solutions collaboratively using social media, and many more. Offering a unique and broad multicultural perspective on how we can learn from the challenges of addressing varied pedagogical issues that have arisen in the context of the pandemic, this handbook will allow researchers, educators, practitioners, institution leaders, and graduate students to explore how media education evolved during 2020 and 2021, and how these experiences can shape the future direction of media education.

Book The Color of COVID 19

Download or read book The Color of COVID 19 written by Sharon A. Navarro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected communities of color while highlighting the prevalence of structural racism in the United States. This crucial collection of essays, written by leading scholars from the fields of communications, political science, health, philosophy, and geography, explores the manifold ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted upon Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities and the way we see race relations in the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the significance of U.S. health inequalities, which the World Health Organization defines as "avoidable [and] unfair." It has also highlighted structural racism, specifically, institutions, practices, values, customs, and policies that differentially allocate resources and opportunities so as to increase inequity among racial groups. Navarro and Hernandez therefore argue that the COVID-19 pandemic has unleashed a race war in America that has further marginalized communities of color by limiting access to resources by different racial and ethnic minorities, particularly women within these communities. Moreover, the systemic policies of the past that upheld or failed to address the unequal social conditions affecting Blacks, Latinxs, and other minorities have now been magnified with COVID-19. The volume concludes by offering recommendations to prevent future humanitarian crises from exacerbating racial divisions and having a disproportionate impact upon ethnic minorities. This timely volume will be of great interest to those interested in the study of race and the social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I write this book to do something that most would consider unwise as a current employee of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I call or appeal for systematic change--change in policies that have kept the financial support from tithe and other sources to Adventist elementary and other sources to Adventist schools at minimal. Please don't think of me as a brave one who dares to go where many have not gone before. I am not... I speak out because we need policy changes at every level."Fairness is not giving everyone the same thing but to give each person what he or she needs to succeed."Many businesses are rethinking how to move forward post the pandemic. We, too, as a church, need to do the same.In the Old Testament, God instructed his people to pass on their faith to their children by intentionally teaching them God's statutes and commandments (Deuteronomy 6:4-8 and Isaiah 54:13). Similarly, the Christian Church receives its marching orders from Jesus in the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:16-20. Jesus directs the church to make disciples of all nations by baptizing and teaching. Church schools are needed to partner with parents and the church as a whole to educate children.Ellen G. White, cofounder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, who earlier encouraged the Seventh-day Church to focus on foreign missions, stated--in addressing church schools in the book Testimonies for the Church, volume 6--that the children are not to be neglected. She writes, "We cannot call ourselves true missionaries if we neglect those at our very doors who are at the most critical age and who need our aid to secure knowledge and experience that will fit them for the service of God." Her solution to financing church schools is simple: "Let all share the expense."Enrollment in Christian elementary and secondary schools have been dropping nationwide. Many families in North America, especially new immigrant families, are not able to afford the tuition to send their children to church schools. Several church schools have closed. In this book, Dr. Sadrail Saint-Ulysse, an ordained minister and educator of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, addresses the challenges of operating Christian schools at the elementary and secondary levels after serving for nearly twenty-five years as a pastor and educator, with the hope that the burden of operating church schools can be shared by the entire church--local, state, national, and worldwide--to alleviate this burden. The book challenges parents, teachers, principals, school boards, church members, and church leaders at every level to make the needed policy changes to ensure that church schools are financed in a sustainable manner.

Book Second Language Learning Before Adulthood

Download or read book Second Language Learning Before Adulthood written by Vanessa De Wilde and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have looked into the role of individual differences in second language learning and found that differences between learners in areas such as language aptitude, language learning motivation and exposure to the language influence second language learning. Most of this research concerned adults. Far fewer studies have addressed the role of individual differences in second language learning of young learners. As second language learning programmes tend to start earlier than before and children are nowadays frequently exposed to a foreign language in social settings such as online games and social media, studying the role of individual differences in young learners can contribute both to SLA-theories and to evidence-based L2 education. This book discusses recent findings concerning the role of individual differences in language learning in young learners. The chapters in the book concern different topics linked to internal individual differences such as language aptitude, motivation, attitude and external individual differences such as exposure and type of instruction, the relative contribution of internal and external factors to language learning, and the interplay between the two types of individual differences.

Download or read book Twin Pandemics written by Alison L. Bailey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the COVID-19 pandemic and racial inequities affect the educational assessment of students, either separately or in combination, as the health crisis was viewed as a factor intersecting with and exacerbating existing racial inequities in educational systems. The four empirical papers in this book attend to the challenges of implementing virtual standardized testing during the coronavirus pandemic, the different educational and assessment experiences of diverse groups of school-age students, and the reconsideration of traditional assessment approaches in response to mounting research evidence and growing concerns around enduring social and racial inequities faced by Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, and other non-white citizens and communities. The four conceptual papers focus primarily on the ways in which assessment may contribute to systemic racism and offer potential solutions to move the educational assessment field forward. In totality, the volume offers needed empirical evidence, innovative methodological approaches, and theoretical and substantive examinations of the effects of the twin pandemics. Twin Pandemics will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Educational Assessment, Education, Psychometrics, Educational Research, Ethnic Studies, Research Methods, Sociology of Education and Psychology. The chapters included in this book were originally published as a special issue of Educational Assessment.
