Book From Star Wars to Superman

Download or read book From Star Wars to Superman written by James Papandrea and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When cultures such as ours toss Jesus out one door, He comes in – albeit disguised – through another. That’s why author Jim Papandrea turned to Star Wars, Star Trek, The Matrix, Terminator, Spider-Man, Batman, Dr. Who, and half-a-dozen other modern shows, discovering in each one powerful images of Christ and salvation. Nor is that surprising. In stories of alternative universes, people always need rescuing; somebody needs to save the day; and sometimes the whole world cries out for a savior . . . which is just what a hero is. About the heroes of some of the most popular sci-fi stories of all time, author Papandrea here answers questions that concern Christians who are also Trekkies, Whovians, Matrix Dwellers, or aficionados of popular science fiction: What kind of “Christ-figure” is the hero of this story, and what does that say about the show’s vision of Christ, humanity and salvation? In the interest of being scientific, Papandrea even gives each hero a Numerical Orthodoxy Score based on the description of Christ in the Nicene Creed, Christianity’s common definition of orthodoxy. Included herein are astute Christian analyses of: Batman * Captain * America * Doctor Who * The Fifth Element * I, Robot * Iron Man * LOST * The Matrix * Planet of the Apes * Pleasantville * Spider-Man * Star Trek * Star Wars * Superman * The Terminator * The Time Machine * Tron * Wonder Woman Here you’ll read about: The pervasive Christian imagery in Doctor WhoStar Trek’s predicted “death of God”Free-will: the stumbling block in the first MatrixThe crucifixion of Spider-ManWhy Wonder Woman is an image of a gnostic saviorThe meaning of salvation in Star Wars (It masquerades as Christian)How Superman’s life begins as a parallel of Moses.I, Robot: the religious reason why the robot is called “Sonny”Whether, in any Christian sense, Neo is The One?Captain American and Iron-Man: one defends the innocent, the other brings justice to the guiltyThe tomb scene in the Fifth Element: it’s not the resurrection we needMatter vs. Spirit in Tron: gnostic to the coreThe anti-Christian bias of Planet of the ApesWhy the Force in Star Wars is no analogy to Grace or the Holy SpiritThe Star Wars Christ figure: Obi-Wan? Luke? Or even, ultimately, Darth VaderWhat Heaven is understood to be in the LOST universeTime travel as incarnation in The Terminator: a compelling analogyRegeneration as resurrection in Doctor Who: Is it Christ-like?How Pleasantville reverses the dynamism of the FallThe baptismal significance of the plane crash in LOSTPleasantville: a twisted version of EdenThe incarnation of the Christ-figure in Planet of the ApesTron’s parallels between Christianity and the Roman Empire . . . and much more about other science fiction and superhero shows! Christians who enjoy popular culture will greet this fun book with interest and acclaim.

Download or read book Building Grit written by Nick Wingo and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You might be wondering, why do I suddenly feel like writing a book, especially for my fellow firefighters. Let me explain. PTSD comes almost guaranteed for most of us, firefighters. On average, 100 firefighters lose their lives in the line of duty. However, that number doubles when it comes to firefighters who end up committing suicide. That is an alarming leap, and that is only a number that has been recorded. There are far more that go on to end their lives and are never recorded. The leading cause of suicide happens to be PTSD, which is why you can imagine my urgency and need to write this book. What we fail to realize is not only PTSD is causing us to suffer, but it is also putting our relationships in harm's way. These suicidal thoughts, the sudden burst of fear and rage, all can have drastic impacts on those who love us and care for us. Through this book, I also intend to rekindle the spark between couples and let them know how both of them must be there for each other. It is only possible once people accept one simple fact: "It's okay to not be okay!" This book, Building Grit, is all about how I went on to battle my PTSD and emerge victorious, back to live my life the way it was supposed to be lived. It is an account of what I did, and what you should do to seek help. It is a journey that reflects on some of the most horrifying experiences that I have dealt with, and those are only there to let you know that you are not alone. We are in this together, and together, we shall rise once again, bigger, better, and stronger. Nick Wingo was born and raised in Colorado. As a Colorado native Nick loves to be in the outdoors. Nick spent a better part of his childhood in the woods camping, or in the mountains snowboarding. Nick has spent the early part of his life as a firefighter paramedic where he has seen things that most people could never understand. Nick has a passion for people and loves to build relationships with the people surrounding him. Nick has spent time in Uganda on a medical mission where he gained a whole new perspective of the value of life. Nick loves to spend his time traveling to see the world. One of Nicks favorite places to be is in Thailand. Nick is married to his beautiful bride Desiree Wingo and has two amazing kids, Owen who is 9 and Analise that is 7. Nick is a family man, who sees the importance of spending time with those he loves. Nick puts God at the center of his life and holds his faith close to him. Nick is a man that wants to see the world and share his experience with anyone who is willing to listen.

This book was released on 2017-01-14 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Firefighter Oral Interview Prep Workbook, authors Amatrudo and Peltz show the reader how to prepare high-scoring responses to entry-level, career fire service interview questions. They draw on their many decades of professional experience as interviewers to explain what panelists want to hear. They not only demonstrate how to create effective answers but also explain why so many replies fail. This is not a book that just models responses that are supposed to be memorized. Instead, it explains the thinking from which good answers can be constructed. Using an easy-to-understand, step-by-step, interactive approach, the authors create blue prints for the candidate. This approach allows the applicant to develop an individualized, well-focused, and extremely thorough response. This book covers everything, from how to dress and make a great first impression to strategies for reducing interviewing anxiety, from how to prepare for each of the twenty basic question types to how respond to the unexpected question, and it even explores how to sit for the occasionally used video interview. Using well over 100 questions asked by actual interview boards, Amatrudo and Peltz share their time-tested approach - the same method that they use in their classes and that has helped thousands of their clients. Firefighter Oral Interview Prep Workbook has been called the best prep book of its kind. In it, Amatrudo and Peltz show candidates how to build great answers and how to demonstrate to the panelists that they think like firefighters. Deputy Chief Mark Amatrudo has been active in the fire service for over 40 years. He is an expert in interviewing for all levels in the fire service and has served on interview panels. He was an instructor at the Connecticut Fire Academy, serves as Assistant Chief for the North Branford Volunteer Fire Department, and is the Deputy Fire Chief of the Wilton Fire Department.
