The area studied covers 116,778 square kilometres and encompasses the Territories portion of the Beverly caribou herd's winter range. The area was divided into two blocks, separated by 108 degrees west longitude, in order to compare annual burn rates for eastern & western parts of the winter range. Results are presented & discussed with regard to number of fires, area burned, annual burn rate, and cumulative area burned for 1966 to 1982. Limitations of the data, the acceptability of annual burn rates, and fire protection issues are discussed.

Book excerpt: This report consists of a series of conclusions and recommendations concerning the winter ecology of barren- ground caribou and effects of fire on the winter range of the Beverly herd, mainly in the Northwest Territories. The conclusions are accompanied by summaries of supporting data from other reports and explanatory remarks. Conclusions 1-17 provide background information on winter ecology of caribou, with a focus on the effects of burns; topics include the adequacy of winter range for the herd in the 1980s, influences of burns on caribou movement and distribution, caribou diet, effect of snow on caribou movement, and effect of burns on caribou forage (notably lichens). Conclusions 18-33 consider priorities for fire management and conclusions 34-39 identify information and research needs.

Book Fire caribou Relationships IV

Download or read book Fire caribou Relationships IV written by Donald C. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports measurements of the cover and biomass of surface vegetation at 197 sites located on the winter range of the Beverly herd of barren-ground caribou, with the primary objective of exploring the relationship between abundance of caribou forages and time since fire, between those two factors and indices of caribou use, and between plant cover and biomass. Both lichens and vascular plants were examined in paired sites located across distinct burn lines. Pellets of caribou, moose, hare, and ptarmigan or grouse were counted in transects at sample sites to obtain information on relative use of forests of various ages by caribou and other herbivores. In addition, data were obtained on the characteristics of the forest canopy with time since fire and possible relationships to forage biomass were investigated.

Book Fire caribou Relationships II

Download or read book Fire caribou Relationships II written by Donald C. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report details reproductive processes in barren-ground caribou and how they are influenced by variables that reflect the physical condition of caribou. Results presented are part of a study conducted 1980-87 on effects of fire on winter range of the Beverly herd, and in which samples were obtained from 856 females in the herd. Variables studied include body weight, back fat depth, kidney fat, femur length and marrow fat content, mandibular water, antler weight, various condition indices, and number of warble fly larvae. Relationships between fecundity and condition variables were examined in four ways: relationships between means of condition variables and fecundity in samples for females older than 4 years, and for females aged 3.5-4 and 2.5-3 years; statistical comparisons of condition variable means for pregnant and non-pregnant females in seven age classes; examination of frequency distributions of condition variables at intervals through tier ranges in pregnant and non-pregnant females of breeding age; and pregnancy rates of females at intervals through the range of each condition variable.

Book Canada s Relationship with Inuit

Download or read book Canada s Relationship with Inuit written by Sarah Bonesteel and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inuit have lived in Canada's north since time immemorial. The Canadian government's administration of Inuit affairs, however, has been generally shorter and is less well understood than the federal government's relations with First Nations and Métis. We hope to correct some of this knowledge imbalance by providing an overview of the federal government's Inuit policy and program development from first contact to 2006. Topics that are covered by this book include the 1939 Re Eskimo decision that gave Canada constitutional responsibility for Inuit, post World War II acculturation and defence projects, law and justice, sovereignty and relocations, the E-number identification system, Inuit political organizations, comprehensive claim agreements, housing, healthcare, education, economic development, self-government, the environment and urban issues. In order to develop meaningful forward-looking policy, it is essential to understand what has come before and how we got to where we are. We believe that this book will be a valuable contribution to a growing body of knowledge about Canada-Inuit relations, and will be an indispensable resource to all students of federal Inuit and northern policy development.

Book Discovering Eden

Download or read book Discovering Eden written by Alex Hall and published by . This book was released on 2003-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boldly go where few have gone before! Endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund. Features 26 colour and black-and-white photographs and maps. "The Power of the Barren Lands may be beyond words but you wonât come any closer than those on the following pagesâ¦" âMONTE HUMMEL West of Hudson Bay in Canadaâs north, an enormous triangle, twice the size of Alberta or Texas, forms the largest chunk of wilderness left on the continent. The word "tundra" may conjure up an image of a desolate, treeless plain, but this mainland portion of the Canadian arctic is far from featureless. The area is home to millions of geese and other birds, and is the haunt of some of the worldâs last, great migratory herds of large herbivores and the predators that follow them. Discovering Eden is a collection of stories, essays and commentaries about the authorâs life in the remote wilderness and his hopes and dreams for its future. It is about the land and the animals that live there, and what they have taught the author. Throughout the book the author tries to explain, within the limitations of language, the lure of the Barren Lands and why this place became for him a personal Eden. The book also recounts adventuresâa personal, inner one for the author, and the thrill of canoeing this untouched wilderness for those who travel with him on his tours.(September 2003)
