Book Raising a Finger Monkey as a Pet

Download or read book Raising a Finger Monkey as a Pet written by Chad Bruno and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no one monkey species that goes by the label " " in the scientific or popular lexicons. One of the tiniest primates, pygmy marmosets are sometimes referred to by this name. Small in stature and with a peculiar appearance, pygmy marmosets can only be found in South America. Because of their small stature and their ability to wrap their little fingers around trees and other things, these monkeys are frequently referred to as "finger monkeys." - The body length of a pygmy marmoset is normally between 4 and 6 inches (10 and 15 centimeters), while its tail is slightly longer. The long, fluffy tail and white facial characteristics set them apart. These apes are experts in hopping and swinging from branch to branch in the tree canopy. They mostly feed on tree sap and insects. - It's worth noting that while "finger monkey" is a common colloquial moniker for pygmy marmosets, it is not the species' official or scientific name. The scientific term for this monkey is the "pygmy marmoset" (Cebuella pygmaea), which should be used when talking about or studying them.

Book excerpt: In the first book in an exciting new coming-of-age fantasy series from the author of the Age of Fire series, an impoverished girl enters into a military order of dragonriders, but her path won't be as easy or as straightforward as she expected. Fourteen-year-old Ileth grew up in an orphanage, and thanks to her stutter was never thought to be destined for much beyond kitchen work and cleaning. But she's dreamed of serving with the dragons ever since a childhood meeting with a glittering silver dragon and its female dragoneer. For years she waits, and as soon as she is old enough to join, Ileth runs away to become a novice dragoneer at the ancient human-dragon fortress of the Serpentine. While most of her fellow apprentices are from rich and influential families, Ileth must fight for her place in the world, even if it includes a duel with her boss at the fish-gutting table. She's then sent off to the dragon-dancers after a foolish kiss with a famously named boy and given charge of a sickly old dragon with a mysterious past. But she finds those trials were nothing when she has to take the place of a dead dragoneer and care for his imprisoned dragon in enemy lands. . . .

Book The Cultural Revolution and Overacting

Download or read book The Cultural Revolution and Overacting written by Tuo Wang and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, which took place in China between 1966 and 1976, was a major political and social tragedy in Chinese history. As part of an effort to understand how the state enforced control amid seeming chaos, this book looks at the ubiquitous revolutionary presentations and performances of power, such as political rituals, revolutionary rhetoric, and public gatherings, in people’s everyday lives during the Cultural Revolution as performances that contributed to the control of the Chinese people. In particular, this book discusses how the promotion of revolutionary models in real life contributed to people’s eagerness to perform the role of the ideal revolutionary, and how the possibility of complete revolutionary transformation, promoted by the state media, and the hard fact that no one was able to completely become a Maoist subject, who would be completely selfless and think and speak only Maoist teaching, subjected people to a state of becoming but never fully having become. The fear of failing in the Maoist transformation constituted the inner mechanism that propelled ordinary people’s radical revolutionary behavior. In addition, this book examines the audience’s reaction to Jiang Qing’s court performance in the trial of the Gang of Four as an anarchic liberation from the revolutionary performance of the Cultural Revolution. Utilizing methodologies of cultural anthropology, linguistics, acting theory, and literary criticism, this book reveals how people’s performances of their everyday life functioned as mechanisms of social control.

Book No Five Fingers are Alike

Download or read book No Five Fingers are Alike written by Joseph C. Berland and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snake charmers, bards, acrobats, magicians, trainers of performing animals, and other nomadic artisans and entertainers have been a colorful and enduring element in societies throughout the world. Their flexible social system, based on highly specialized individual skills and spatial mobility, contrasts sharply with the more rigid social system of sedentary peasants and traditional urban dwellers. Joseph Berland brings into focus the ethnographic and psychological differences between nomadic and sedentary groups by examining how the experiences of South Asian gypsies and their urban counterparts contribute to basic perceptual habits and skills. No Five Fingers Are Alike, based on three years of participant research among rural Pakistani groups, provides the first detailed description in print of Asian gypsies. By applying methods of anthropological observation as well as psychological experimentation, Berland develops a theory about the relationship between social experience and mental growth. He suggests that there are certain social conditions under which mental growth can be accelerated. His work promises to stand as an important contribution to the cross-cultural literature on cognitive development.
