Book The Great War

Download or read book The Great War written by National Museum Cardiff Staff and published by . This book was released on 2014-08 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1917, after three years of hard fighting in the First World War, unprecedented loss of life and increasing hardship at home, the British government were looking for ways of developing public support for the War and generating financial support. This exhibition presents the 66 lithographs from a print portfolio that was commissioned by Wellington House, a government department secretly set up to produce propaganda in 1917. It was the most ambitious print project of the First World War. Eighteen artists contributed to the series, including some of the most celebrated artists of the time. They were published in an edition of 200 by the Fine Art Society and printed under the direction of Ernest Jackson, himself a contributor to the Ideals series. The prints were to be displayed in galleries around Britain and abroad - in France, America and Canada and sold to raise funds for the war effort. Despite good press coverage, the print sales did not meet expectations and the government made a loss on the project as a whole. By showing this work together as a group once again, this exhibition reassesses their significance as images of First World War propaganda and with the passage of time, allows a new audience to view the entire suite of images. The works are split in to two subjects, Ideals and Efforts. The Ideals express the aims and ambitions of the war through use of allegory and symbolism. 12 artists, including Edmund Dulac, Augustus John, Charles Shannon, Charles Ricketts and William Rothenstein, contributed to the Ideals series with subjects such as The Freedom of the Seas, The Reconstruction of Belgium and The Triumph of Democracy. Nine artists, including Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, Eric Kennington, Muirhead Bone and Charles Pears made prints for the Efforts portfolios, each producing six images under a single theme such as Making Soldiers, Making Guns, Building Ships or Work on the Land. These prints offer a fascinating overview of many war activities, including the vital role that many women played. Artistically the works are very different, reflecting the varying trends in British art at the time. Nevinson?s prints are modern, linear and dramatic, Pears' images are detailed and naturalistic, whereas Rothenstein communicates his subject through simple, pared-down images. This exhibition brings together the full set of lithographs for the first time on public display in Wales and is supported by a series of free talks, activities and events.--/www.museumwales.ac.uk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by American Indian Art Magazine as one of the 40 best publications on Native American Art in the last 40 years This book is a comprehensive guide to the identification of Antique Native American baskets, specifically basket making tribes of western North American. It is not a formal anthropology text, but rather an organized compendium of Native basketry information that blends previous anthropologic studies and the experience of the authors. The text defines how collectors, curators, dealers, auction personnel, and academics can systematically approach tribal identification of Native American basketry. It does this by clarifying the authors' rational for tribal groupings based on basket types and not on language or other cultural traits. It explains multiple Native American basket making materials and techniques and describes how understanding this information can lead to accurate tribal attribution. This knowledge is essential in developing connoisseurship and will enhance an appreciation of this wonderful Native American art form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An informative guide to Russian Decorative Arts and their historical context Covers a wide range of crafts including Fabergé, jewelry, woodwork, hardstone, glass and porcelain, as well as precious metal Explores pre-Revolutionary Russia, discussing various artifacts of the Tsarist era as far back as the 16th and 17th centuries with particular focus on the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries Ideal for both novice and established collectors of the field Russia's last great Imperial celebration took place at the Winter Palace in St Petersburg with the lavish ball of 1913 celebrating 300 years of Romanov rule. The finest gowns, jewels, snuff boxes, and banqueting tableware of the Tsarist era were sumptuously displayed then for the last time. The outbreak of World War I in 1914 and the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 brought such opulence to an end. Ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russians have been eager to repatriate their lost heritage. Works by jewelers and silversmiths to the Tsars are particularly sought after today as status symbols, with the market for pre-Revolutionary decorative arts touching a wide audience - from the curators at the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, to the predawn bargain hunters at the Paris flea markets. Russian Decorative Arts offers an introductory guide to porcelain, glass, silver, Tula work and other base metals, orders and decorations, jewelry, objects of virtue, Fabergé, lapidary, woodwork and walrus ivory. Each topic is detailed in an illustrated chapter introducing the techniques, its specific Russian characteristics and an overview of the principle makers.

Book A Forger s Tale

Download or read book A Forger s Tale written by Shaun Greenhalgh and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of one of the greatest living art forgers, who fooled the world's art experts whilst working from a shed in the garden of his parents' house in Bolton, England. In 2007, Bolton Crown Court in the United Kingdom sentenced Shaun Greenhalgh to four years and eight months in prison for the crime of producing artistic forgeries. Working out of a shed in his parents' garden, Greenhalgh had successfully fooled some of the world's greatest museums. During the court case, the breadth of his forgeries shocked the art world and tantalised the media. What no one realised was how much more of the story there was to tell. Written in prison, A Forger's Tale details Shaun's notorious career and the extraordinary circumstances that led to it. From Leonardo drawings to L.S. Lowry paintings, from busts of American presidents to Anglo-Saxon brooches, from cutting-edge Modernism to the ancient art of the Stone Age, Greenhalgh could--and did--copy it all. Told with great wit and charm, this is the definitive account of Britain's most successful and infamous forger, a man whose love for art saturates every page of this extraordinary memoir.

Book Mandalas Mapping the Buddhist Art of Tibet

Download or read book Mandalas Mapping the Buddhist Art of Tibet written by Kurt Behrendt and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2024-09-16 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mandala is a diagram of the universe—a map of true reality intended to provide a focus for Buddhist religious practice and inspire the devout. This book highlights the distinctive Tibetan approach to creating mandalas, exploring how it crossed over from India into Tibet, and how continuous exchanges of art and ideas between the two cultures, led by monks and spiritual teachers, gave rise to a uniquely Tibetan style of Buddhist imagery. Featuring more than one hundred paintings, sculptures, and ritual objects, this superbly illustrated volume reflects the dazzling complexities of the Tibetan imagery that has provided a foundation for mandalas through the centuries. Most notably, a mesmerizing installation by the Tibetan American artist Tenzing Rigdol (b. 1982), specially created for the accompanying exhibition and published here for the first time, offers contemporary audiences a way of interrogating and understanding their world and underscores how this ancient tradition remains a vibrant living practice.
