Faced with brutal weather and a lack of supplies, most returned later that same year. Even so, mining continued until simple fur trading posts were transformed into settlements, and finally, into civilization, making the Fraser River experience one of the major developments in Pacific Northwest history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slumach’s Gold chronicles what is possibly Canada’s greatest lost-mine story. It searches out the truth behind a Salish man’s hanging for murder in 1891 and tracks the intriguing legend about him that grew after his death. It was a legend that turned into a drama of international fascination when Slumach—the hanged criminal—was mysteriously linked to gold nuggets “the size of walnuts.” The stories claimed that Slumach had placed a curse on a hidden motherlode to protect it from interlopers and trespassers just before he plunged to his death “at the wrong end of a five-strand rope.” Although many have attempted to find Slumach’s gold over the past 100 years, following tantalizing clues that are part of the legend itself, none have succeeded—or have they? Rick Antonson, Mary Trainer and Brian Antonson have diligently sifted through history and myth, separating fact from fiction, but leaving the legend intact—along with the promise of gold yet to be found by some future gold seeker.

Book The Boys in the Boat Movie Tie In

Download or read book The Boys in the Boat Movie Tie In written by Daniel James Brown and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for the Major Motion Picture Directed by George Clooney—exclusively in theaters December 25, 2023! The #1 New York Times bestselling true story about the American rowing triumph of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin—from the author of Facing the Mountain For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant. It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man’s personal quest.

Book Placer Gold Deposits of Nevada Classic Reprint

Download or read book Placer Gold Deposits of Nevada Classic Reprint written by Maureen G. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Placer Gold Deposits of Nevada Following the discovery of placers at Gold Canyon, placer discoveries in Nevada were broadly in three periods: the 1860's to 1880's, when many small deposits throughout the State were discovered and sporadically worked and several large placers were discovered and extensively worked; the short period between 1906 and 1910, when very rich placers were dis covered at Lynn, Battle Mountain, Manhattan, and Round Mountain; the early 1930's, when economic conditions created by the depression caused a renewed interest in placer mining, and many individuals sought, and a few discovered, new placer areas throughout the State. The location of the placers described in this report is shown on plate 1. Very little factual information can be found about the early periods of placer mining in Nevada. For many placers, the only reports available are hearsay estimates of production and speculations about the extent of the placer ground based on remnants of placer pits, shafts, and other workings. Many of the placers said to have had a high production between 1860 and 1890 were worked by Chinese miners who came to Nevada dur ing the building of the railroads and stayed on to work at mining and other activities. The Chinese were reputed to be secretive with their earnings from the placers and did not ship the gold to the mint by Wells Fargo or other shippers. They worked the gravels very thoroughly in areas where American miners did not wish to expend great labor to win the gold. The placers in the Sierra and Spring Valley districts, Pershing County, were worked by Chinese miners; they have a very high estimated production before 1900 and a comparatively low known production since that time. Book The Coeur D Alenes Gold Rush and Its Lasting Legacy

Download or read book The Coeur D Alenes Gold Rush and Its Lasting Legacy written by Suzanne S. Bamonte and published by . This book was released on 2017-04 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the 1883-84 gold rush to what became the Eagle City and Murray area, situated along Prichard Creek in the remote Coeur d'Alene National Forest of northern Idaho. The gold rush drew thousands of fortune seekers and marked the beginning of the internationally renowned Coeur d'Alene Mining District. The book provides a detailed documentation of the gold rush activity, including the hastily built towns and the people involved. Following the gold rush, in what had become the North Side region of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District, active hard-rock mining of primarily lead and zinc commenced. In addition to capturing that aspect of the history, the book discusses the remarkable roles the region played in the formation and preservation of the U.S. Forest Service, the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and a burgeoning logging industry that harvested the largest remaining stands of the coveted white pine.

Book Gold Creeks and Ghost Towns

Download or read book Gold Creeks and Ghost Towns written by Bill Barlee and published by Surrey, B.C. : Hancock House. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a brief look at the six historic mining counties of NE Washington. Included within these counties are some of the most fascinating and historic areas on the old Pacific Slope. Okanogan County - This is the land of Kamiakin and Tonasket' famous Indian chiefs from another century, and those men of the early west like Okanogan Smith and Pinnacle Jim O'Connell. It is the largest and one of the most fascinating counties in the state. Here the footloose and curious may wander past long forgotten towns and abandoned townsites with colorful names like Ruby, Golden, and Bodie or range through the sweeping desert lands of up into the remote high country. There is much to hold the passerby; legends of hidden gold and long lost mines, several of them still searched for by close-mouthed treasure hunters and others intrigued by the age old quest for gold. And some of those historic towns of yesterday, places like Wauconda, Nighthawk and old Molson, still stand, silent monuments to the past and little changed in almost a hundred years. Walk through the brooding recesses of McLauhlin's Canyon and along the banks of rivers with lyrical Indian manes, and you still stalk the West of the 19th Century - and THAT'S Okanogan County.
