Book excerpt: With a paradigm shift in social systems, the concept of an arranged marriage seems to be losing its sheen and becoming difficult especially when you belong to one part of the country and work in another region. This is the story of a young man who finds it difficult to search for a bride. He faces a lot of expected as well as unexpected challenges during his search. He interacts with a lot of women and learns a different lesson each time. He travels multiple times from one city to another in search of his elusive bride. He puts so much effort, wastes so much energy, money and time during this eventful journey that he realizes that it would have been better to fall in love with someone instead of going through this tedious process of an arranged marriage. As he gets older and frustrated, the moot question is ‘will he get a bride as per his expectation?’. Will he marry a Manglik or a non-Manglik girl? Will that girl be from Delhi, Mumbai or some other part of the country?

Book excerpt: Murder unsettles a Nordic town in this “heart-stoppingly suspenseful” crime novel from “a master at probing the plague of guilt that infects a community” (Washington Post Book World). When perpetual bachelor Gunder Jomann goes to India for two weeks and comes home married, the town of Elvestad is stunned. On the day the Indian bride is supposed to arrive, the battered body of a woman is found in a meadow on the outskirts of town. None of the “good people of Elvestad” can believe that anyone among them would be capable of such a brutal murder. But in his quiet, formal way, Inspector Konrad Sejer understands that good people can commit atrocious deeds, and that no one is altogether innocent—including the café owner who knows too much, the girl who wants to be a chief witness, and the bodybuilder with no outlet for his terrible strength. Another brilliantly conceived, dark novel from one of Europe’s most successful crime writers. “[It] takes . . . subtle thought to interpret a cafe owner’s surliness or a schoolgirl’s eagerness to be a murder witness. What it takes is a writer like Fossum, able to see into the soul of an entire village.” —Marilyn Stasio, New York Times “Like a Scandinavian winter, this potent psychological thriller chills right to the bone. —Booklist, starred review “An irresistible page-turner that’s like a Nordic Sherlock Holmes story, with characters by Bergman and blood by Tarantino.” —Entertainment Weekly “Outstanding . . . With a skill few can equal, Fossum deftly paints the provincial inhabitants of Elvestad, coupling those poignant word portraits with a whodunit and an insightful but fallible detective.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Book excerpt: What happens when a person lies? She gets herself in a muddle of chaos. What happens when a person who can't lie, lies? She gets into a bigger muddle of chaos since no one expects her to lie. That's exactly what happens to Reena Oberoi - an event coordinator who lies about being engaged to avoid an arranged marriage and fixes herself a fake fiancé. But unexpected events pursue when Reena discovers that her fake-fiancé - Aari - is actually the man her parents have chosen for her to get married to. Reena doesn't want to marry Aari because by doing so she would be adhering to an arranged marriage, and she'd sooner be an old maid than allowing something like that to happen. Also, she knows Aari's in love with someone else. Now a new predicament faces Reena and Aari where they have to find ways to break off their fake engagement. But the harder they try to break their engagement off, the harder their parents try to get them married. The wedding day is fixed and the day before Diwali, Aari's parents and Reena's parents decide to throw them an engagement party. They also call a priest (panditji) to bless the couple and check their astrology charts. As Reena try to wiggle her way out of the ceremonies and rituals as best as she could, she finds herself faced with yet another dilemma - a bigger one. She falls in love with Aari who is not only in love with someone else but who didn't want to marry her in the first place. As she spends more time with Aari trying to sort things out, Reena finds she's drawn to him in a strange way, in a way she's never been drawn to any other man before. Soon, Reena realizes that what she feels for Aari is what she's always dreamt of feeling for a man but never had, until now. She finds Aari completes her. And when Aari kisses her one evening, she knows he is the one...but she also knows, he is forbidden to her since he's in love with Suzy, his live-in girlfriend. Will Reena ever find her happily-ever-after? And is Aari the one?

Book Searching for Home

Download or read book Searching for Home written by Simran Chawla and published by Hachette India. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling chronicle of what it means to be Indian in a foreign land. In an age when India is one of the strongest emerging markets and a developing superpower, tens of thousands of Indians leave the country each year to seek new lives on distant shores. What are they looking for and what do they really find? In a first-of-its-kind narrative, journalist and American expat Simran Chawla documents the contemporary Indian immigrant experience in various corners of the world ? from Alaska to the UK, Europe to Africa, the Americas to the Middle East. In this book, she tells the story of families like the Singhs who farm in the heartland of Italy just south of Verona; discovers the lucrative Indian wedding industry in the Gulf or United Arab Emirates; learns about the community of ?aunties? in Orlando who have found meaning in their lives once again by organizing sewing get-togethers; watches a cricket match between diamond traders in Antwerp; and explores the heartbreaking price of living illegally in London. In lucid, affecting prose, Searching for Home tells the stories of people who, though separated by thousands of kilometres, share experiences that continue to bind them to their homeland.

Book Bollywood Weddings

Download or read book Bollywood Weddings written by Kavita Ramdya and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-12-03 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bollywood Weddings examines how middle to upper class second-generation Indian-American Hindus negotiate wedding rituals, including the dating and engagement processes. Many of these couples are (in Ramdya's neologism) 'occasional Hindus' who display their Hindu religious background only on important occasions such as the rite of passage that is marriage. These couples (and their extended families) negotiate two vastly different cultures and sets of values inside a community that has itself largely pre-determined how to mix American and Indian/Hindu elements into this ritual. As a rule, the first generation organizes the wedding, which is largely Hindu, and their children coordinate the American-style reception. Instead of choosing either India or America, or arriving at a compromise in between the two, this community takes a 'both/and' approach, embracing both cultures simultaneously. Ramdya's ethnographic fieldwork includes in-depth interviews of engaged couples, observation at their wedding ceremonies, wedding videography and photography, and material culture such as the clothing her participants wore on their wedding day. She explores pre-wedding day topics such as America's Indian-Hindu marriage market and bridal industry, then goes on to describe pre-wedding and wedding-day customs including the engagement party, kanyadan, and baraat. Bollywood, whose Indian origins grants it authenticity from the Hindu perspective and whose emphasis on romance accommodates American values, emerges as the key mediating third culture around which the community applies the both/and model to wedding rituals. The both/and model uncovered here reinforces the community's identity as ethnic and American even as it confirms that success in America need not be bought at the expense of one's religious background and cultural heritage.

Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling author of The Windfall. . . . What could go wrong at a lavish Indian wedding with your best friend and your entire family? “A witty and romantic novel perfect for all readers.”—Terry McMillan NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY MARIE CLAIRE AND NEW YORK POST When Tina Das finds herself at a crossroads both professionally and personally, she wonders if a weeklong trip to Delhi for her cousin’s lavish wedding might be just the right kind of escape. Maybe a little time away from New York will help get her mind straight about her stalled career, her recent breakup, and her nagging suspicion that she’ll never feel as at home in America as she does in India. Tina hopes this destination wedding, taking place at Delhi’s poshest country club, Colebrookes, will be the perfect way to reflect and unwind. But with the entire Das family in attendance, a relaxing vacation is decidedly not in the cards. Her amicably divorced parents are each using the occasion to explore new love interests—for her mother, a white American boyfriend, for her father, an Indian widow arranged by an online matchmaker—and Tina’s squarely in the middle. A former fling is unexpectedly on the guest list, a work opportunity is blurring the lines of propriety on several fronts, and her best friend Marianne’s terrible penchant for international playboys is poised to cause all sorts of chaos back home. The accommodations are swanky, the alcohol is top-shelf, but this family wedding may be more drama than Tina can bear and could finally force her to make the choices she’s spent much of her life avoiding. Infused with warmth and charm, Destination Wedding grapples with the nuances of family, careers, belonging, and how we find the people who make a place feel like home.
