Book Financing Strategies for Water and Environmental Infrastructure

Download or read book Financing Strategies for Water and Environmental Infrastructure written by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published by Org. for Economic Cooperation & Development. This book was released on 2003 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important obstacle to achieving environmental goals has been the failure to adequately address associated financial issues, such as minimising the costs involved and matching costs with available resources. This publication presents a method for implementing financing strategies for investment-heavy environmental infrastructure projects, such as urban water supplies or wastewater collection and treatment. These strategies, supported by the FEASIBLE computer model, were developed in several countries of eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA), in EU accession countries and China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While little recognized in international law scholarship, multilateral treaties in diverse fields have begun to apply strategic management techniques to make them more effective and responsive. This examination of those practices and their interplay with associated international organizations considers the application of strategic management across treaties' planning, financing, implementation, and evaluation activities. The study leads to a new appreciation of the intricacies of multilateral treaty activities and a better understanding of their operations within complex webs of networked international institutions. In considering different approaches to steering treaties through this dispersed global governance landscape, Thomas F. McInerney draws on current strategic management literature to explore the utility of nonlinear, emergent models of strategy and gain insights from strategy as practice research. While recognizing strategic management's potential value in facilitating more flexible applications of multilateral agreements, he also emphasizes the need to maintain their normativity as international legal obligations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing solid waste is one of the major challenges in urbanization. A survey conducted in all 58 municipalities of Nepal in 2012 found that the average municipal solid waste generation was 317 grams per capita per day. This translates into 1,435 tons per day or 524,000 tons per year of municipal solid waste generation in Nepal. Many of these technically and financially constrained municipalities are still practicing roadside waste pickup from open piles and open dumping, creating major health risks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the Project is to support the implementation of the solid waste management component of the Borrower's program which aims at improving the quality and coverage of integrated solid waste management services in the territory of the Borrower. There are three components to the project, the first component being development of, and investments in, solid waste disposal systems. The component will primarily finance the construction of solid waste management infrastructure consisting of civil works, equipment and services in support of the rehabilitation, construction, and/or expansion of landfills and transfer stations in selected sites and the closing of non sanitary open-air landfills. The component will also potentially finance the rehabilitation and expansion of landfill sites that may currently be operating at sub-sanitary levels. The second component is the institutional strengthening in solid waste management. The component will finance three key areas of technical assistance as: a) strengthening sector regulatory framework and capacity building; b) strengthening of solid waste management planning systems; and c) national assessment of recycling markets and strategy framework. Finally, the third component is the project management. The component will finance costs associated with project management including goods, works, services, and operating expenses associated with financial audits and midterm and end-project evaluations.

Book What a Waste 2 0

    Book Details:
  • Author : Silpa Kaza
  • Publisher : World Bank Publications
  • Release : 2018-12-06
  • ISBN : 1464813477
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book What a Waste 2 0 written by Silpa Kaza and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid waste management affects every person in the world. By 2050, the world is expected to increase waste generation by 70 percent, from 2.01 billion tonnes of waste in 2016 to 3.40 billion tonnes of waste annually. Individuals and governments make decisions about consumption and waste management that affect the daily health, productivity, and cleanliness of communities. Poorly managed waste is contaminating the world’s oceans, clogging drains and causing flooding, transmitting diseases, increasing respiratory problems, harming animals that consume waste unknowingly, and affecting economic development. Unmanaged and improperly managed waste from decades of economic growth requires urgent action at all levels of society. What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management to 2050 aggregates extensive solid aste data at the national and urban levels. It estimates and projects waste generation to 2030 and 2050. Beyond the core data metrics from waste generation to disposal, the report provides information on waste management costs, revenues, and tariffs; special wastes; regulations; public communication; administrative and operational models; and the informal sector. Solid waste management accounts for approximately 20 percent of municipal budgets in low-income countries and 10 percent of municipal budgets in middle-income countries, on average. Waste management is often under the jurisdiction of local authorities facing competing priorities and limited resources and capacities in planning, contract management, and operational monitoring. These factors make sustainable waste management a complicated proposition; most low- and middle-income countries, and their respective cities, are struggling to address these challenges. Waste management data are critical to creating policy and planning for local contexts. Understanding how much waste is generated—especially with rapid urbanization and population growth—as well as the types of waste generated helps local governments to select appropriate management methods and plan for future demand. It allows governments to design a system with a suitable number of vehicles, establish efficient routes, set targets for diversion of waste, track progress, and adapt as consumption patterns change. With accurate data, governments can realistically allocate resources, assess relevant technologies, and consider strategic partners for service provision, such as the private sector or nongovernmental organizations. What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste Management to 2050 provides the most up-to-date information available to empower citizens and governments around the world to effectively address the pressing global crisis of waste.
