Book Agriculture Diversification and Gender in Rural Africa

Download or read book Agriculture Diversification and Gender in Rural Africa written by Agnes Andersson Djurfeldt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Agriculture, Diversification, and Gender in Rural Africa uses a longitudinal cross-country comparative approach to contribute to the understanding of smallholder agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. Relying on unique household level data collected in six African countries since 2002, it addresses the dynamics of intensification and diversification within and outside agriculture in contexts where women have much poorer access to agrarian resources than men. Despite a growing interest in smallholder agriculture in Africa, this interest has not been matched by the research on the subject. While recent policies focus on reducing poverty through encouraging smallholder agriculture, there are few studies showing how livelihoods have changed since this time, and especially how such changes may have affected male and female headed households differently. Moreover, agriculture is often viewed in isolation from other types of income generating opportunities, like small scale trading. Agriculture, Diversification, and Gender in Rural Africa looks at how livelihoods have changed over time and how this has affected the relationship between agricultural and non-agricultural sources of livelihoods. In general, women have much poorer access to agricultural sources of income, and for this reason the interplay between farm and non-farm sources of income is especially important to analyse. Providing suggestions for more inclusive policies related to rural development, this edited volume outlines current weaknesses and illustrates potential opportunities for change. It offers a nuanced alternative to the current dominance of structural transformation narratives of agricultural change through adding insights from gender studies as well as village-level studies of agrarian development. It positions change in relation to broader livelihood dynamics outside the farm sector and contextualises them nationally and regionally to provide a necessary analytical adaption to the unfolding empirical realities of rural Africa.

Book Agricultural Development Banks in Africa

Download or read book Agricultural Development Banks in Africa written by Gerhard Coetzee and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book focuses on agricultural development banks in Africa and their new role in the rural finance context. This book is a project of the African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA). AFRACA aims to improve access to financial services in rural areas. In many cases the only access rural entrepreneurs and specifically small farmers have is through the services of agricultural development banks. In the mid 1980s agricultural banks and related financial institutions accounted for over 50 percent of the membership of AFRACA. The agricultural bank was government's response to improve access to financial services in rural areas to further agricultural development. When these banks were created they depended solely on budgetary allocations and soft loans from international financial institutions or governments. Most of these banks were not allowed to accept deposits."--page 1.

Book Agricultural Development and Food Security in Africa

Download or read book Agricultural Development and Food Security in Africa written by Renu Modi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of food security and land issues in Africa has become one of increased importance and contention over recent years. In particular, the focus has shifted to the role new global South donors - especially India, China and Brazil - are playing in shaping African agriculture through their increased involvement and investment in the continent. Approaching the topic through the framework of South-South co-operation, this highly original volume presents a critical analysis of the ways in which Chinese, Indian and Brazilian engagements in African agriculture are structured and implemented. Do these investments have the potential to create new opportunities to improve local living standards, transfer new technology and knowhow to African producers, and reverse the persistent productivity decline in African agriculture? Or will they simply aggravate the problem of food insecurity by accelerating the process of land alienation and displacement of local people from their land? Topical and comprehensive, Agricultural Development and Food Security in Africa offers fresh insight into a set of relationships that will shape both Africa and the world over the coming decades.

Book Economic Diversification and Growth in Africa

Download or read book Economic Diversification and Growth in Africa written by Omotunde E. G. Johnson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-18 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a coherent framework for assessing economic policy making in developing countries, with special reference to those in Africa. The chapters focus on policy making issues in three critical areas that are of major importance in the African context: capacity building for domestic resource mobilization; regional integration in Africa and intra-regional trade; and export diversification of individual African countries. Although applying economic theory as well as using case studies and empirical evidence from the economics literature, the book is written in a way that makes the core ideas accessible even to readers without advanced knowledge of the technical economics involved. Economic Diversification and Growth in Africa is a timely study which demonstrates how developing countries in Africa can improve their policy making strategies to diversify their economies and accelerate economic development.

Book Securing Africa s Land for Shared Prosperity

Download or read book Securing Africa s Land for Shared Prosperity written by Frank F. K. Byamugisha and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on land administration and reform in Sub-Saharan Africa, and is highly relevant to all developing countries around the world. It provides simple practical steps to turn the hugely controversial subject of "land grabs into a development opportunity by improving land governance to reduce the risks of dispossessing poor landholders while ensuring mutually beneficial investors’ deals. The book shows how Sub Saharan Africa can leverage its abundant and highly valuable natural resources to eradicate poverty by improving land governance through a ten point program to scale up policy reforms and investments at a cost of USD 4.5 billion. The book points out formidable challenges to implementation including high vulnerability to land grabbing and expropriation with poor compensation as about 90 percent of rural lands in Sub Saharan Africa are undocumented, but also timely opportunities since high commodity prices and investor interest in large scale agriculture have increased land values and returns to investing in land administration. It argues that success in implementation will require participation of many players including Pan-African organizations, Sub Saharan Africa governments, the private sector, civil society and development partners; but that ultimate success will depend on the political will of Sub Saharan Africa governments to move forward with comprehensive policy reforms and on concerted support by the international development community. Its rigorous analysis of land governance issues, yet down-to-earth solutions, are a reflection of Byamugisha's more than 20 years of global experience in land reform and administration especially in Asia and Africa. This volume will be of great interest to and relevant for a wide audience interested in African development, global studies in land, and natural resource management.

This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the changing role of national development banks (NDBs) in Africa.
