Download or read book Comparative Studies on Financial Performance of Commercial Banks in Ethiopia Problems and Prospects written by Tarekegn Tamiru Woldesenebt and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: Very Good, Mekelle University, language: English, abstract: The objective of the study was to compare the financial performance of commercial Banks by using their average ratio in terms of profitability, liquidity, efficiency, and solvency. In this study by using excel analyzed information was presented by statistical measures like graphs and tables. Both the trend and comparative financial performance analysis approaches were used. Five years audited financial reports from 2005 to 2009 of the commercial banks were taken for comparison purpose. Those commercial banks taken for comparison were Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Dashen Bank Share Company, Bank of Abyssinia, United Bank, Wegagen Bank, and Nib International Bank. Year of establishment, amount of capital reserve, and number of branches are taken as a criterion for selecting these commercial banks for analysis purpose. In addition to data gathered from secondary sources, unstructured interview was conducted on problem and prospects related to the financial performance of commercial banks and the responses were presented. The respective ratios of each bank are compared with the average ratios of the six commercial banks taken for the study. Then trend analyses of six commercial banks taken in this study are presented by using the above ratios. In both the financial performance analysis approaches i.e., the trend and comparative analysis, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) showed good performance in financial ratios of Profitability, Liquidity, and Solvency ratio, but Bank of Abyssinia(BOA) has showed weak performance in all above explained financial ratios. From this, it is concluded that CBE was profitable and functionally efficient and BOA is less profitable and the earning capacity of the bank is weak. Therefore, in order to improve profitability the management of BOA must increase management efficiency by reducing administrative expenses to the best possible level, efficiently control costs and utilize customers deposit, dispose of the assets which are not contributing for the profitability of the banks and work to maximize the overall profitability of the bank through investing in profitable avenue.

Book Determinants of Commercial Bank Interest Margins and Profitability

Download or read book Determinants of Commercial Bank Interest Margins and Profitability written by Asl? Demirgüç-Kunt and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: March 1998 Differences in interest margins reflect differences in bank characteristics, macroeconomic conditions, existing financial structure and taxation, regulation, and other institutional factors. Using bank data for 80 countries for 1988-95, Demirgüç-Kunt and Huizinga show that differences in interest margins and bank profitability reflect various determinants: * Bank characteristics. * Macroeconomic conditions. * Explicit and implicit bank taxes. * Regulation of deposit insurance. * General financial structure. * Several underlying legal and institutional indicators. Controlling for differences in bank activity, leverage, and the macroeconomic environment, they find (among other things) that: * Banks in countries with a more competitive banking sector-where banking assets constitute a larger share of GDP-have smaller margins and are less profitable. The bank concentration ratio also affects bank profitability; larger banks tend to have higher margins. * Well-capitalized banks have higher net interest margins and are more profitable. This is consistent with the fact that banks with higher capital ratios have a lower cost of funding because of lower prospective bankruptcy costs. * Differences in a bank's activity mix affect spread and profitability. Banks with relatively high noninterest-earning assets are less profitable. Also, banks that rely largely on deposits for their funding are less profitable, as deposits require more branching and other expenses. Similarly, variations in overhead and other operating costs are reflected in variations in bank interest margins, as banks pass their operating costs (including the corporate tax burden) on to their depositors and lenders. * In developing countries foreign banks have greater margins and profits than domestic banks. In industrial countries, the opposite is true. * Macroeconomic factors also explain variation in interest margins. Inflation is associated with higher realized interest margins and greater profitability. Inflation brings higher costs-more transactions and generally more extensive branch networks-and also more income from bank float. Bank income increases more with inflation than bank costs do. * There is evidence that the corporate tax burden is fully passed on to bank customers in poor and rich countries alike. * Legal and institutional differences matter. Indicators of better contract enforcement, efficiency in the legal system, and lack of corruption are associated with lower realized interest margins and lower profitability. This paper-a product of the Development Research Group-is part of a larger effort in the group to study bank efficiency.

Book Sustainable Organic Agriculture for Developing Agribusiness Sector

Download or read book Sustainable Organic Agriculture for Developing Agribusiness Sector written by Nikola Puvača and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing sustainable organic agriculture and resilient agribusiness sector is fundamental, keeping in mind the value of the opportunity presented by the growing demand for healthy and safe food globally, with the expectation for the global population to reach 9.8 billion by 2050, and 11 billion by 2100. Lately, the main threats in Europe, and worldwide, are the increasingly dynamic climate change and economic factors related to currency fluctuations. While the current environmental policy provides several mechanisms to support agribusinesses in mitigating organic food for daily increasing human population and stability of the currency, it does not contemplate the relative readiness of individuals and businesses to act correctly. Organic farming is the practice that relies more on using sustainable methods to cultivate crops and produce food animals, avoiding chemicals and dietary synthetic drug inputs that do not belong to the natural ecosystem. Organic agriculture can also contribute to meaningful socioeconomic, ecologically sustainable development, and significantly in the development of the agribusiness sector, especially in developing countries.

Book Powering the Digital Economy Opportunities and Risks of Artificial Intelligence in Finance

Download or read book Powering the Digital Economy Opportunities and Risks of Artificial Intelligence in Finance written by El Bachir Boukherouaa and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the impact of the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the financial sector. It highlights the benefits these technologies bring in terms of financial deepening and efficiency, while raising concerns about its potential in widening the digital divide between advanced and developing economies. The paper advances the discussion on the impact of this technology by distilling and categorizing the unique risks that it could pose to the integrity and stability of the financial system, policy challenges, and potential regulatory approaches. The evolving nature of this technology and its application in finance means that the full extent of its strengths and weaknesses is yet to be fully understood. Given the risk of unexpected pitfalls, countries will need to strengthen prudential oversight.

Book Financial Sector Assessment

Download or read book Financial Sector Assessment written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of many countries around the world clearly shows that while financial sector development can spur economic growth, financial fragility and instability can seriously harm growth. Following the financial crises of the late 1990s, there has been increasing interest in the systematic assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of financial systems, with the ultimate goal of formulating appropriate policies to foster financial stability, and stimulate financial sector development. Consequently, there has been an increased demand from financial sector authorities in many countries, as well as from the Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff for information on key issues, and sound practices in the assessment of financial systems, and in the design of policy responses. This Handbook of Financial Sector Assessment is a response to this demand. The Handbook presents an overall analytical framework for assessing financial system stability and developmental needs, providing broad guidance on approaches, methodologies, and techniques of assessing financial systems. Although the Handbook draws substantially on Bank and IMF experience with the financial sector assessment programs (FSAPs), and from the broader policy and operational work in both institutions, it is designed for generic use in financial sector assessments, whether conducted by country authorities themselves, or by Bank and IMF teams. It is, therefore, hoped the Handbook will serve as an authoritative source on the objectives, analytical framework, and methodologies of financial sector assessments, as well as a comprehensive reference book for training on the techniques of such assessments.

Book The Corporate Governance of Banks

Download or read book The Corporate Governance of Banks written by Ross Levine and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Levine examines the corporate governance of banks. When banks efficiently mobilize and allocate funds, this lowers the cost of capital to firms, boosts capital formation, and stimulates productivity growth. So, weak governance of banks reverberates throughout the economy with negative ramifications for economic development. After reviewing the major governance concepts for corporations in general, the author discusses two special attributes of banks that make them special in practice: greater opaqueness than other industries and greater government regulation. These attributes weaken many traditional governance mechanisms. Next, he reviews emerging evidence on which government policies enhance the governance of banks and draws tentative policy lessons. In sum, existing work suggests that it is important to strengthen the ability and incentives of private investors to exert governance over banks rather than to rely excessively on government regulators. These conclusions, however, are particularly tentative because more research is needed on how legal, regulatory, and supervisory policies influence the governance of banks. This papera product of the Global Corporate Governance Forum, Corporate Governance Departmentis part of a larger effort in the department to improve the understanding of corporate governance reform in developing countries"-- World Bank web site.

Book Banking Efficiency and Financial Development in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Banking Efficiency and Financial Development in Sub Saharan Africa written by Sandrine Kablan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assesses the determinants of banking system efficiency in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and asks what, besides the degree of efficiency, explains the low level of financial development in the region. It uses stochastic frontier analysis to measure efficiency and a generalized method of moments system to explain financial development. SSA banks are found to be generally cost-efficient, but nonperforming loans undermine efficiency, which suggests that improvement in the regulatory and credit environments should improve efficiency. The political and the economic environment have held back financial development in SSA.

Book Breaking the Bank A Probabilistic Assessment of Euro Area Bank Profitability

Download or read book Breaking the Bank A Probabilistic Assessment of Euro Area Bank Profitability written by Selim Elekdag and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores the determinants of profitability across large euro area banks using a novel approach based on conditional profitability distributions. Real GDP growth and the NPL ratio are shown to be the most reliable determinants of bank profitability. However, the estimated conditional distributions reveal that, while higher growth would raise profits on average, a large swath of banks would most likely continue to struggle even amid a strong economic recovery. Therefore, for some banks, a determined reduction in NPLs combined with cost efficiency improvements and customized changes to their business models appears to be the most promising strategy for durably raising profitability.
