Book Financial Linkages Between the U S and Latin America

Download or read book Financial Linkages Between the U S and Latin America written by Roberto Benelli and published by INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivated by recent bursts of global financial market turbulence, this paper investigates the linkages between the financial markets in the United States and those of the seven largest Latin American economies, focusing on the impact of shocks originating in the U.S. stock, bond, and currency markets. After documenting that cross-country linkages were different in "tranquil" and "turbulent" times within our sample, we find that: (i) for stock markets, recent episodes of market turbulence stood out from preceding ones as they showed an increased sensitivity of Latin American markets to U.S. shocks, reversing a trend of weakening linkages; (ii) currency markets in Latin America exhibited a decrease in cross-market linkages with the U.S. during the last episodes of volatility, consistent with increased exchange rate flexibility in the region; and (iii) the external bond markets in Latin America remained on a trend of weakening linkages with U.S. corporate bonds, while they increased their sensitivity to movements in other emerging market bond markets.

This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a global economy beset by concerns over a growth recession, financial volatility, and rising inflation, countries in the Western Hemisphere have been among the few bright spots in recent years. This has not come as a surprise to those following the significant progress achieved by many countries in recent years, both in macroeconomic management and on the structural and institutional front. Hence, there can be little doubt, as this book argues, that economic and financial linkages between Latin America, the United States, and other important regions of the world economy have undergone profound change.

Book On Global Linkages of Economies and Economic Integration in Latin America

Download or read book On Global Linkages of Economies and Economic Integration in Latin America written by Hem C. Basnet and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the fast pace of globalization, interdependence among economies is accelerating across the globe. Consequently, the economic and financial linkages between countries around the world are deepening more and more. Similarly, economic cooperation and policy coordination have been guiding principles to the policy makers, financial agents, and trade partners alike. Information flows from one corner of the world to another just in the blink of an eye. A small disturbance in USA for instance can create ripples and tides at the same time all over the world. The European integration has been a successful and an iconic example of economic integration in other regions. This dissertation consists of three essays. The first essay investigates the transmission of US and Euro area shocks to emerging market economies by analyzing their influences on real and monetary sectors. The second essay investigates the feasibility of economic integration in Latin America by considering the seven largest economies in the region i.e. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. Lastly, the third essay examines the role of exchange rates dynamics in Latin American countries considered in the second essay.

Book United States Policies and the Latin American Economies

Download or read book United States Policies and the Latin American Economies written by Werner Baer and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a distinguished group of noted Latin American experts, this volume analyzes the complex economic relationship between the United States and Latin America during the 1980s and into the 1990s. As the editors assert at the outset, the United States has not had a cohesive policy toward Latin America since the Kennedy administration's Alliance for Progress. Instead, policy has vacillated, taking different positions on Latin American economic matters and requiring different actions on the part of Latin American governments. The essays collected here demonstrate in detail how the latent tensions among sometimes conflicting U.S. policy goals have been exacerbated by the economic crises of Latin America in the 1980s. Among the key topics addressed are the mounting debt crisis, privatization, Latin American integration, and the specific effects of U.S. policies on various aspects of Latin American economies. The volume begins with an in-depth analysis of Latin America's debt crisis which concludes that U.S. policy in this area has often worked against our long-term interest in Latin America's return to higher real growth. Subsequent essays examine the contradictory position of the United States toward Latin America with regard to debt and trade relations, develop a model of an indebted nation that can be used to simulate future real growth and external-debt accumulation, and compare the effects of privatization in four Latin American countries. The remaining essays evaluate the performance of Argentine and Brazilian public enterprises, look at the impact of direct and indirect U.S. policies on Latin America's labor sector, study the implications of financial liberalization policies, and discuss Latin American regional trade arrangements. This book will be of interest to scholars, policymakers, and executives who deal regularly with Latin American issues.

Book How Latin America Weathered The Global Financial Crisis

Download or read book How Latin America Weathered The Global Financial Crisis written by José De Gregorio and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-05 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the economy of Latin America responded more positively than Asia, Europe or the United States after being hit by the recent global financial crisis? Three years after the worst of the crisis, Latin America's GDP is 25 percent higher than its precrisis level. José De Gregorio, Governor of the Central Bank of Chile from 2007 to 2011, tells the story of how Latin America has responded to the crisis with a perspective that only an insider can have. De Gregorio focuses on the seven largest economies of the region, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela (90 percent of the region's output). He argues that Latin America was resilient because of good macroeconomic policies, strong financial systems, and "a bit of luck."

Book Finance for Development

Download or read book Finance for Development written by Barbara Stallings and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) publication Access to finance is critical in setting the course for development in emerging market economies. In this innovative study, which provides the first book-length analysis of the Latin American financial sector, Barbara Stallings and Rogerio Studart examine the dramatic changes resulting from financial liberalization in the region. The authors begin by discussing the critical transformations taking place in Latin America since 1990—a period marked by acceleration toward a new open, market-oriented development model, and away from a semi-closed model relying heavily on the state. Stallings and Studart examine changes in ownership of the financial sector and government regulation of banking, evaluate the role of capital markets as a source of finance, and compare Latin America's financial sector to that of East Asia. The second section of the book features case studies that demonstrate the changes occurring in Chile, Mexico, and Brazil with particular reference to finance for investment and access to credit. The authors conclude with a set of policy recommendations aimed at strengthening Latin American banks and capital markets so that they can play a greater role in supporting economic development.

Download or read book Euro and the Financial Relations Between Latin America and Europe written by Luis Miotti and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Latin America's indisputable reference currency is the U.S. dollar, many of the countries in the region have economic ties with European countries. The creation and introduction of the euro in 1999 marked the beginning of a new era in international monetary and financial relations, although it is still difficult to draw any definitive conclusions regarding its scope and its implications for Latin America. This study evaluates the internationalisation of the euro and its likely effects on the international monetary system, as well as on the development of relations between Europe and Latin America, including trade and financial flows.

Book The Economics of Contemporary Latin America

Download or read book The Economics of Contemporary Latin America written by Beatriz Armendariz and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Latin America's economy focusing on development, covering the colonial roots of inequality, boom and bust cycles, labor markets, and fiscal and monetary policy. Latin America is richly endowed with natural resources, fertile land, and vibrant cultures. Yet the region remains much poorer than its neighbors to the north. Most Latin American countries have not achieved standards of living and stable institutions comparable to those found in developed countries, have experienced repeated boom-bust cycles, and remain heavily reliant on primary commodities. This book studies the historical roots of Latin America's contemporary economic and social development, focusing on poverty and income inequality dating back to colonial times. It addresses today's legacies of the market-friendly reforms that took hold in the 1980s and 1990s by examining successful stabilizations and homemade monetary and fiscal institutional reforms. It offers a detailed analysis of trade and financial liberalization, twenty–first century-growth, and the decline in poverty and income inequality. Finally, the book offers an overall analysis of inclusive growth policies for development—including gender issues and the informal sector—and the challenges that lie ahead for the region, with special attention to pressing demands by the vibrant and vocal middle class, youth unemployment, and indigenous populations.

Book Latin America and Asia Pacific Trade and Investment Relations at a Time of International Financial Crisis

Download or read book Latin America and Asia Pacific Trade and Investment Relations at a Time of International Financial Crisis written by Mikio Kuwayama and published by UN. This book was released on 2010 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economic crisis has put an end to a period of worldwide expansion and halted the integration of Latin America and developing Asia with the international economy. Current and expected economic weakness in the advanced economies has led us to look elsewhere for sources of growth. Emerging economies in Asia and Latin America have increased their contributions to world production, finance, and trade in the past decades. In doing so, the two regions have deepened their economic ties with significant implications for the recovery of their respective economies. In this paper we discuss the impact of the crisis on the commercial patterns inside and outside the Forum for East Asia Latin American Cooperation (FEALAC) bloc. We describe the FEALAC economy and identify existing trade and investment structures, and find important structural shortcomings such as a high dependence on inter-industry trade between Asia and Latin America. We argue that this is also an opportunity for greater integration into bi-regional value-added chains and that trade and cooperation between the two regions can be an effective means to counterbalance the adverse effects of the current financial turmoil.
