Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial intermediation provides the means by which funds are mobilised from within and outside an economy and reallocated to productive sectors. Financial intermediaries such as banks, insurance companies and microfinance institutions help to deepen the intermediation process. The level of economic activities, foreign direct investment inflows, savings culture of citizens and in some cases the religious belief of the people can influence the financial intermediation process significantly. Gini and Herfindahl indices have shown downward trend ,indicative of improved competition in the Ghanaian banking industry, hence deepening the financial intermediation process. The monetary and fiscal policies of Ghana as well as general improvement in economic activities and increase credit to the private sector are signs of improved financial intermediation process in Ghana. The enactment of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority Law to revolutionalise the development trajectory of the three northern regions of Ghana is also significant. The question that should provoke national discourse is whether Islamic banking is needed to further deepen the process?

Book Financial Sector Development in Ghana

Download or read book Financial Sector Development in Ghana written by James Atta Peprah and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates factors that contribute to the development of an efficient financial sector in Ghana. While sustainable finance has long been known to propel economic growth and development, and while many African countries have taken initiatives to develop integrated frameworks of their financial sectors that tackle developmental challenges, scholars and policymakers have always grappled with understanding of factors that enhance performance of the financial sector. In this book, an expert team of authors examines the financial landscape, central bank policies, competition, financial innovation, financial inclusion and banking stability in Ghana, while also exploring how financing models such as enterprise finance and microfinance can be more effective in sustaining financial markets. The authors discuss how Ghana can build fortified institutions, regulatory frameworks, and productive capacity to strengthen the financial sector and foster pathways that will enhance economic development. Empirical and scientific evidence give this book a unique approach that is both qualitative and quantitative.

Book Rural Financial Intermediation and Poverty Reduction in Ghana

Download or read book Rural Financial Intermediation and Poverty Reduction in Ghana written by Michael Danquah and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial sector in rural areas, where most of the poor people in sub-Saharan Africa are found, has transformed massively in recent times, notably through the increased penetration of several types of rural financial intermediaries in addition to rural and community banks and microfinance institutions. Using recent household survey data, we ascertain the access of rural populations to various types of financial services, and the influence of rural financial intermediation on poverty reduction, in Ghana. By accounting for the potential endogeneity of access to financial services, we show that rural households with access to basic financial services are significantly more likely to be non-poor than those without such access. In order to more sustainably tackle the goal, highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals, of eliminating global hunger or extreme poverty, the poor must be allowed to obtain meaningful access to financial services through the design of efficient pro-poor financial products.

Book Competition and Efficiency in Banking

Download or read book Competition and Efficiency in Banking written by Mr.Johan Mathisen and published by INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper assesses the degree of bank competition and discusses efficiency with regard to banks' financial intermediation in Ghana. By applying panel data to variables derived from a theoretical model, we find evidence for a noncompetitive market structure in the Ghanaian banking system, which may be hampering financial intermediation. We argue that the structure, as well as the other market characteristics, constitutes an indirect barrier to entry thereby shielding the large profits in the Ghanaian banking system.

Book excerpt: Since the 2003 Financial Stability Assessment Program (FSAP) update, Ghana’s financial system has undergone rapid growth and structural transformation. The authorities have been implementing reforms to enhance the financial system’s resilience to shocks and its contribution to growth. The vulnerabilities reflect the interplay of several factors, but state involvement is an important element. The other contributory factors include deficiencies in commercial banks’ risk management, supervision, and the insolvency regime. Additional recommendations are detailed in the Report on the Standards and Codes on Compliance (ROSC) with the Basel Core Principles (BCP).

Book Research on micro financing in Ghana

Download or read book Research on micro financing in Ghana written by Joseph Ato Forson and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: none, , language: English, abstract: This study sought to investigate into the roles being played by MFIs as far the operation of SMEs are concern. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews to collect data from 66 respondents (see appendix 3 pg. 84). From the research it was revealed that during the 2007 fiscal year alone, GCSL and FASL paid over GH¢54,846,273.00 as loans to SMEs as against GH¢197,675.00 mobilised through savings. In other to reach out to more customers, additional branches have been opened in new Tafo, Bantama, Tanoso and Adum. The research also revealed that these MFIs have an effective way of recovering loans with an appreciable rate varying between 90.2% - 96.6%. Though this is encouraging, it has been argued that these rates fall below the international standard of measuring micro finance recovery rate which is 98%. This has accounted for the increasingly falling rate of total loan grants. On the impact of MFIs on poverty reduction, it was established that there has been a positive impact with about 85% of those interviewed admitting they are able to access certain facilities that hitherto they found difficult. The income earnings has considerable increased per week as against the standard of measurement set in the GPRS I (2000), which recognizes all earners of income less than GH90.00 per annum to be poor. Aside the monetary indicators, respondents are also able to meet some of the social indicators of poverty. These improvements were attainable through the additional services provided by these MFIs. According to the research, aside its lending role, it also act in an advisory capacity teaching clients basic accounting book keeping and sound financial management. This has helped in expanding the operation of SMEs and discovery of auxiliary ventures.

Book The Impact of Financial Sector Policies on Banking in Ghana

Download or read book The Impact of Financial Sector Policies on Banking in Ghana written by Martin Brownbridge and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghana has implemented a financial sector reform programme since the late 1980s. The banking system had suffered severe shallowing together with widespread bank distress as a consequence of the pre-reform policies of financial repression, government control of banks and the prolonged economic crisis. The financial sector reforms included the liberalisation of allocative controls on banks, restructuring of insolvent banks and reforms to prudential regulation and supervision. This paper examines why the banking system in Ghana was in need of reform in the 1980s and evaluates the impact of the financial sector reforms. The conclusion reached is that while the reforms have brought about improvements in the banking system - banks are now more prudently managed and supervised - major constraints to efficient financial intermediation remain, not least macroeconomic instability and the still very shallow nature of financial markets.
