Download or read book Financial Sector Development in Pacific Island Economies Country reports written by Marian E. Bond and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 assesses the state of financial sector development in seven of the 12 Pacific developing member countries of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). It consolidates the findings of individual country reports on the Fiji Islands, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu, and recommends strategies for developing sound financial systems in the areas of macroeconomic policy, banking systems, nonbank financial institutions, financial markets, microfinance, and land tenure systems. Volume 2 specifically analyzes the attempts by Pacific developing member countries' governments to strengthen and develop their financial systems in order to promote economic development. They emanate from a regional technical assistance project that had the objective of formulating strategies for financial sector development, which would be the basis of a policy dialogue between the governments and ADB. Recommendations are of special relevance to the operations and management of central banks.

Book Monetary Policy Transmission Mechanisms in Pacific Island Countries

Download or read book Monetary Policy Transmission Mechanisms in Pacific Island Countries written by Mr.Jonathan C. Dunn and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the global financial crisis, central banks in Pacific island countries eased monetary policy to stimulate economic activity. Judging by the ensuing movements in commercial bank interest rates and private sector credit, monetary policy transmission appears to be weak. This is confirmed by an empirical examination of interest rate pass-through and credit growth. Weak credit demand and underdeveloped financial markets seem to have limited the effectiveness of monetary policy, but the inflexibility of exchange rates and rising real interest rates have also served to frustrate the central banks’ efforts despite a supporting fiscal policy. While highlighting the importance of developing domestic financial markets in the long run, this experience also points to the need to coordinate macroeconomic policies and to use all macroeconomic tools available in conducting countercyclical policies, including exchange rate flexibility.

Book What Drives Interest Rate Spreads in Pacific Island Countries An Empirical Investigation

Download or read book What Drives Interest Rate Spreads in Pacific Island Countries An Empirical Investigation written by Mr. Fazurin Jamaludin and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth has been sluggish in Pacific island countries (PICs). High cost of credit is likely one of the reasons. While the small scale, geographic dispersion, and vulnerability to shocks increase the cost and risk of credit in this country group, there is considerable variability in interest rate spreads both across countries and over time. This paper examines the determinants of lending rates and interest rate spreads in a panel of six PICs, extending the literature that was largely descriptive in nature or focused on a single country. Our results are in line with economic theory. We find that the size of the economy is negatively correlated with spreads, confirming the importance of scale. Inflation appears to have only marginal impact on spreads. High loan loss provisions and nonperforming loans increase the cost of credit. So does banking system concentration. Higher institutional quality is associated with lower spreads.

Book excerpt: '. . . this is an interesting and valuable collection of papers that addresses a highly topical area of research. The quality of writing is high in the main and the econometric methodology and models transparent. The appendices to many of the empirical chapters provide detailed information about data sources as well as model results. The book should be required reading for researchers and graduate students in this field, and the review papers provide valuable teaching material. It will be especially useful for those concerned with the contribution of governance structures to economic performance, financial crises and the still-disputed relationship between growth and financial liberalization.' - Jenifer Piesse, Asia Pacific Business Review Finance, Governance and Economic Performance in Pacific and South East Asia focuses on key aspects of government policy, financial systems and their links to the economic miracle in Pacific and South East Asia. It also considers the financial crises that have affected those economies and their economic progress. The contributors examine the success of governance in the form of government involvement with the macroeconomy, and with the deregulation of markets in general. Attention is drawn not only to the need for further liberalisation, but also the need to introduce regulatory structures to produce orderly markets.

This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenging geography and poor infrastructure of many Pacific nations mean digital financial services (DFS) are a particularly effective means of enhancing financial inclusion in the region. However, a number of major challenges confront DFS in the Pacific, including the establishment of reliable agent networks and the building of sufficient consumer trust in DFS for it to become a viable payments channel. This report examines the current use of DFS in the Pacific, analyzes the issues that need to be addressed, and provides recommendations for increasing financial inclusion in the region. This publication was produced by the Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative, a regional technical assistance facility cofinanced by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Government of Australia and the New Zealand government.
