Book Heresy The Spanish Inquisition

Download or read book Heresy The Spanish Inquisition written by Gerry Boehme and published by Cavendish Square Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Inquisition was used by the Catholic Church to suppress heresy long before the start of the Spanish Inquisition in 1478. The Inquisition in Spain was granted to investigate Jews who had converted to Christianity, but it was soon hijacked by the state and used as a bludgeon against Jewish and Muslim communities that had lived in the region for centuries. This book examines the historical background behind this shameful period, the consequences of the persecution of the Jews, and how the Inquisition was used in the battle of public perceptions when the Reformation divided Christianity in the West. Included is a timeline of the important dates in the more than three hundred years of the Inquisition.

Book excerpt: The unique story of a business heretic and his concept of Economic Value Added (EVA) In Against the Grain, Joel Stern shares for the first time, not only the story of how EVA swept the corporate world, but the story behind the story-the intellectual underpinnings of EVA, how he and his colleagues at Stern Stewart & Co. promoted the concept, won its initial acceptance by major corporations, and later turned the concept into a revolution. He has for good reason been called a one-man catalyst for change. In an engaging memoir, he has given us not only an account of his business strategy, but also provided fascinating anecdotes and vignettes of encounters with leading businessmen on four continents. Joel M. Stern (New York, NY) has been the Managing Partner of Stern Stewart & Co. since its founding in 1982 and was coauthor of The EVA Challenge (Wiley: 0-471-40555-8). A recognized authority on financial economics, corporate performance measurement, corporate valuation, and incentive compensation, he is a leading advocate of the concept of shareholder value. Irwin Ross (New York, NY) was retained to write The EVA Challenge with Joel Stern and John Shiely. He is a former roving editor of Reader's Digest and over the years has written for Fortune and a variety of other magazines.

Book Orthodoxy and Heresy in Early Christian Contexts

Download or read book Orthodoxy and Heresy in Early Christian Contexts written by Paul A Hartog and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighty years ago, Walter Bauer promulgated a bold and provocative thesis about early Christianity. He argued that many forms of Christianity started the race, but one competitor pushed aside the others, until this powerful 'orthodox' version won theday. The victors rewrote history, marginalizing all other perspectives and silencing their voices, even though the alternatives possessed equal right to the title of normative Christianity. Bauer's influence still casts a long shadow on early Christian scholarship. Were heretical movements the original forms of Christianity? Did the heretics outnumber the orthodox? Did orthodox heresiologists accurately portray their opponents? And more fundamentally, how can one make any objective distinction between 'heresy' and 'orthodoxy'? Is such labeling merely the product of socially situated power? Did numerous, valid forms of Christianity exist without any validating norms of Christianity? This collection of essays, each written by a relevant authority, tackles such questions with scholarly acumen and careful attention to historical, cultural-geographical, and socio-rhetorical detail. Although recognizing the importance of Bauer's critical insights, innovative methodologies, and fruitful suggestions, the contributors expose numerous claims of the Bauer thesis (in both original and recent manifestations) that fall short of the historical evidence.

Book Heresy Crusade and Inquisition in Medieval Quercy

Download or read book Heresy Crusade and Inquisition in Medieval Quercy written by Claire Taylor and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2011 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigation of the development of the Cathar heresy in south-west France, looking at how and why its growth differed across the regions. The medieval county of Quercy in Languedoc lay between the Dordogne and the Toulousain in south-west France; it played a significant role in the history of Catharism, of the Albigensian crusade launched against the heresy in 1209, and of the subsequent inquisition. Although Cathars had come to dominate religious life elsewhere in Languedoc during the course of the twelfth century, the chronology of heresy was different in Quercy. In the late twelfth century, nearby abbeys were still the main focus of devotional activity; inquisitors' discoveries in the 1240s point to the previous twenty years as the period when Catharism and also the Waldensian heresy took a firm hold, most dramatically in its far north. This study deals with the cultural and political origins of the religious change. Its careful analysis offers a significant re-evaluation of the nature and social significance of religious dissidence, and of its protection and persecution in both the history and historiography of Catharism. Dr Claire Taylor is Associate Professor, School of History, University of Nottingham.
