This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study takes a critical look at the impact of micro finance banks on poverty reduction in Nigeria. The objective being to determine if the credits or other ancillary services provided by them have had any significant effect upon the livelihoods, homes and standard of living of the teaming economically active poor in Nigeria. To specifically understand the relationship between micro finance activity and poverty assessment indicators, we adopt some selected explanatory variables like Microfinance banks aggregate asset, Deposit liabilities and loan advances; while the dependent variable was decomposed into life expectancy index, education index, gross domestic product per capital and human development index. In other to evaluate the hypotheses of the study we employed the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression technique. This is especially important for a better understanding of the impact of microfinance banks activities on the selected poverty assessment index in Nigeria. Our findings reveal that loans and advances of microfinance banks had a significant impact on education and life expectancy index. Also, microfinance banks asset base had a negative impact on human development index and its components; while deposit liabilities of microfinance banks also had a negative impact on human development index and its components. Some of the recommendations to increase impact of microfinance banks on poverty reduction in Nigeria are more efforts at increasing loans and advances given to the economically active low income groups to enable them engage in economically viable entrepreneurial activities which helps reduce their level of poverty. Others include the provision of adequate infrastructures such as functional roads and electricity in the rural areas and city slums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Miscellaneous, University of Freiburg (Global Studies Program, Institute fur Soziologie.), language: English, abstract: [...] The poverty question is a global phenomenon. It is perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing Mankind today, especially in most parts of the developing world. This Perhaps explains why the eradication of poverty was listed as the first of the eight issues of the millennium development goals. The problem of poverty is more disturbing giving the fact that there is abundant and enormous wealth in the world to adequately meet the needs of every one. Poverty may be defined as a condition of lack and inability to meet adequately the basic needs of life such as Shelter, food, education and health care. Similarly, according to a United Nations statement: Poverty is a denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It means lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society. It means not having enough to feed and clothe a family, not having a school or clinic to go to; not having the land on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living, not having access to credit. It means insecurity, powerlessness and exclusion of individuals, households and communities. It means susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living on marginal or fragile environments, without access to clean water or sanitation.(UN,2008 quoted in Ucha,2010). 2 In other words, the problems of poverty is more worrisome in Sub-Saharan Africa with 47.5% of the people living on less than $1.25 and 70% living on less than $2 per day in Sub-Sahara Africa (World Bank, 2008).The figure may have become worse considering the drought that hit parts of horn of (East) Africa in 2011 and the problem of maladministration or poor governance bedeviling the region. In Nigeria the high level of corruption, poor leadership has contributed to exacerbate the problem of poverty. Ucha, 2010 puts it thus: “Unemployment, corruption, non diversification of the economy, income inequality, laziness and a poor educational system can be considered to be some of the key factors contributing to poverty in Nigeria”(p.46). Given the fact that Nigeria is a country with rich human and natural resources, it is disturbing that majority of her citizens are still very poor. The government has over the years formulated a lot of programs and policies geared towards poverty reduction; however it remains a controversy whether those programs and policies have actually achieved their desired objectives.[...]

Download or read book Microfinance and Poverty Reduction in Nigeria written by Cecilia Nwigwe and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book attempts to provide a critical assessment of microfinance as a strategy for poverty reduction in Nigeria. It argues that while microfinance has developed some innovative management and business strategies, its impact on poverty reduction remains in doubt. Microfinance, however, certainly plays an important role in providing safety-net and consumption smoothening. However, for any significant dent on poverty the focus of public policy should be on growth-oriented and equity-enhancing programs, such as broad-based productive employment creation. There is also need to design financial sustainable models that increases outreach and scale up operations for the poor. More so, financial inclusion agenda should be considered and adopted in a concerted manner.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is one of the leading economies in Africa with vast oil reserve and abundant human and material resources at disposal. Despite these resources, poverty among the populace is widely spread. The national commission in Nigeria in 2012 reported that more than 75 million are trapped by poverty. Several efforts have been put forward at various points in time by successive governments, private entrepreneurs and other development partners to overcome the menace of poverty among the populace. Recently, microfinance becomes another mechanism through which poverty is being challenged and the last decade had witnessed tremendous contribution of microfinance institutions in various parts of the world. The main purpose of the study is to assess the availability, awareness, acceptance as well as the socioeconomic impacts of microfinance programmes on poverty alleviation in Northern Nigeria. The study used 400 samples drawn from the Islamic and conventional microfinance clients through simple random sampling technique. Self developed questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. The findings show that both conventional and Islamic instruments are available in the microfinance institutions for clients irrespective of gender, geographical location and types of business engaged by the client. Moreover, Islamic products are accepted among clients engaged in different types of businesses. The findings also revealed that both conventional and Islamic microfinance affect the socio-economic well-being of clients thereby reducing poverty. Implications of the study for microfinance institutions, policy regulators as well as recommendations have been provided in line with the major findings.

Book Impact of Credit Risk Management Practices on Micro Financing the Poor for Poverty Alleviation in Africa

Download or read book Impact of Credit Risk Management Practices on Micro Financing the Poor for Poverty Alleviation in Africa written by Victor Yawo Atiase and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Africa has experienced encouraging economic growth over the past decade, the livelihood and living conditions of most on the continent does not reflect this trend. Ghana is no exception. Even though Ghana has made modest gains in economic growth and productivity, livelihoods, unemployment, diseases and above all the number one enemy poverty among the Ghanaian population continue to soar above acceptable limits. In most developing countries like Ghana, microfinancing the poor for them to engage in entrepreneurial activity has been used to fight this number one enemy, poverty. To protect their investment, microfinance institutions (MFIs) apply credit risk management. Although credit risk management is essential to safeguarding the credit portfolio, deposits and improve loan recovery, it is essential that MFIs adopt pro-poor credit risk management practices in order to provide access to entrepreneurial finance to these ‘bottom of the ladder’ who are often marginalised from access to finance from mainstream banks. The problem is that, when credit risk management practices are too stringent, it creates the potential of denying the poor access to entrepreneurial finance, with consequences for poverty reduction. In fact, some commentators strongly suggest that financing the poor to engage in entrepreneurial activity is hampered by less than pro-poor credit risk management practices of lending institutions. This assertion has yet to be tested on MFIs in the developing country context including Ghana where microcredit has become a flourishing business. A knowledge gap therefore exists insofar as the impact of credit risk management practices on poverty alleviation through microfinancing the poor to engage in entrepreneurship is concerned. To bridge this gap, this study investigated the microfinance credit risk management practices of MFIs operating in the Greater-Accra Region of Ghana to assess the extent to which such practices hinder the poor from accessing entrepreneurial finance and impact thereof on poverty alleviation/ reduction. In the study, the Greater Accra Region is used as a test case for Ghana by involving respondents from purposefully selected 141 MFIs in the region comprising of 378 officers of MFIs and 1,235 MFI loan beneficiaries. The results reveal that stringent credit risk management practices exist among MFIs. It was also found that most of the poor who are willing to engage in entrepreneurship are unable to obtain finance due to credit risk management practices that they perceive as are too stringent. Furthermore, it was found that MFIs that adopt pro-poor credit risk management practices attract more poor clients, and such clients become successful in their businesses. Based on the above and other findings, recommendations are made which if carefully implemented can make microcredit risk management pro-poor, while minimising credit risk for MFIs. Recommendations are also made for further research.

Book Financial Performance of Microfinance Institutions in Ghana and Uganda

Download or read book Financial Performance of Microfinance Institutions in Ghana and Uganda written by Johannes Flosbach and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2015 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the determinants of financial performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Ghana and Uganda, against the backdrop of the public and academic debate over the financial and social implications of microfinance. In the absence of a conceptual model, the study chooses an inductive research approach with the objective of defining and developing a conceptual model with the capacity to explain, quantify, and compare the performance of MFIs. The research is particularly relevant in the African context where microloan interest rates regularly exceed 100% per annum and where the microfinance industry is lacking behind its global peers in regard to financial and social performance. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is one of the major critical issues in most of the African countries; Tanzania being inclusive. The majority who are productive poor (especially women) had been denied of access to financial institutions such as banks in order to get loans to increase their working capital. It is because of this (gap) that is why since early "90 s" there has been an emergence of micro finance institutions (MFIs) to bridge the gap and join with micro-entrepreneurs in combating poverty and it is expected that (together with other things) poverty will have been reduced by 50% and completely eliminated by 2015 and 2025 respectively.Despite the existence of MFIs no systematic studies have been done to assess the impact of MFIs on poverty alleviation. In this book the author tries to explore the whole issue of impact assessment in micro-finance institutions looking at one micro-finance program as a case study for more insights. This book is useful to all micro-finance practitioners, evaluators, researchers, policy makers, academicians and donors.

This book was released on 2018-07-14 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 75.00, University of Geneva, course: Master of Business Administration, language: English, abstract: This project presented an investigation into the impact of microfinance banks (MFBs) on the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Abuja between the periods of (2005-2017). To achieve this, a comprehensive analysis was undertaken regarding the development of Microfinance as an economic tool, and the relevance of SMEs to the achievement of widespread economic empowerment and the alleviation of poverty in Nigeria. Aside from conventional banking services such as the acceptance of deposits and provision of credit, findings from primary research disclosed that the provision of capacity building and other supportive services were designated by the CBN as necessary for adequate development of SMEs. However information on the existence of some of these service or information regarding the measures of success experienced by SMEs in terms of growth through access to these services were difficult to ascertain. Therefore, a secondary research was undertaken on twenty-one (21) MFBs and forty-eight (48) SMEs all based in FCT Abuja, Nigeria with the aim of investigating the factors surrounding the rendering of capacity building and other core microfinance services as prescribed by the CBN. Findings revealed that only a fraction of identifiable CBN-described capacity building services were offered to SMEs by MFBs - services such as credit application training were focused on while other important capacity building services such as 'book keeping', 'quality assessment' and 'sales/marketing' were largely ignored. Conclusive results revealed that there was not a significant indication of growth impacted on SMEs by MFBs. Findings rather suggested that there is a lot more that needed to be done in order for MFBs to effectively make an impact on the growth of SMEs. In conclusion, ca

Book The Role of Micro finance in Alleviating Poverty in Rural Areas in Nigeria a Case Study of Oriade Local Government Osun State

This book was released on 2018 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite abundant natural resources, such as agricultural, petroleum, gas and mineral resources, the poverty situation has been on the rise. Particularly worrisome is that the country earned over US$300 billion from one resource - petroleum - during the last three decades of the twentieth century. But rather than record remarkable progress in national socio -economic development, Nigeria retrogressed to become one of the 25 poorest countries at the threshold of twenty-first century whereas it was among the richest 50 in the early-1970s. An important reason could be the disparate distribution of gains from production and trade. A closer look at the industries that did well in the past three to four decades suggests that utilizing these resources required large investments which only drew large companies. Without a good social distribution model, the gap between the haves and have-nots have only widened. Despite gains in the GDP, the poverty rate continued to slide, and is currently around 40%. Nigeria has strived to reduce poverty and increase participation of ordinary citizens in the economic development. Some of the earlier efforts by the government focused on education, then on increased farm production, and finally on microfinance. To encourage very small business owners to make investments and to foster a small business-friendly environment, the government initiated a series of microfinance programs. Microfinance refers to loans, savings opportunities, insurance, money transfers and other financial products targeted at the poor; micro-credit refers specially to small loans. Three features distinguish microfinance from other formal financial products. These are: (a) small loan principals of the loans advanced or savings collected; (b) absence of asset based collateral; and (c) simplicity of operations. In 2005, the federal government implemented a policy that led to the establishment of microfinance banks operating in two-tiers. At the local level, the microfinance banks would provide capital of up to 20 million naira [special character omitted]. At the state level, the microfinance banks had to provide capital of 1 billion naira. In 10 years or so, the number of micro-lending organizations had risen to more than 7,000 (Mohammed and Hasan, 2008). The main goals of these efforts were to reduce poverty status of the people by providing them self-employment opportunities, focusing especially on access to credit facilities to enable them to establish their own business. Since banks had high stakes on the borrower's business success, they regularly enquired about the financial aspects of their business and specifically about the use of the borrowed funds. The questions specific to microcredit program recipients that we answer in this study are: (a) did the program increase microcredit access to poor people; (b) did the program reduce poverty and improve the standard of living; and (c) did credit-constrained recipients experience increase in profitability. To answer the research question, a survey questionnaire was designed and administered to a sample of households in the Oriade local government within Osun state. The survey instrument was tested for validity and reliability. Product Moment Correlation (Pearson) method, which tests the questionnaire validity, showed a value of 0.717, which is larger than the critical value in the Pearson table at the 5 percent significant level. Cronbanch-alpha method, which is used to test the reliability of a survey instrument, showed a value of 0.564, which is larger than the benchmark value of 0.50. The questionnaire was administered to two hundred business owners who availed microfinance. This research also sheds light on the financial aspects of microcredit. Important credit characteristics include loan size, maturity date, timeliness of loan disbursement (delayed time index), and interest payments. We assess borrower characteristics and evaluate the impact of microcredit on business profits, poverty status and consumption patterns. A key finding is that access to credit has a larger effect on improving the standard of living than that of education.
