Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drawing on a comparative study of hospital records, Charity and the London Hospitals investigates how and why Victorians contributed in order to show that benevolence was rarely amenable to a single form or reason. Community hospitals will need to be able to enhance infrastructure, technologies, and services to remain competitive and appealing to patients. Research indicates that to reduce the burden this can put on capital budgets, some small independent hospitals are utilizing fund development and philanthropy as strategic options to improve financial stability. This literature review explores the current research on the financial status of community hospitals and community hospital philanthropy, and will document how community hospitals can use philanthropy to improve financial stability and remain independent, locally governed organizations.

Book Community Chest

Download or read book Community Chest written by and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voluntary contributions by private citizens and corporations in amounts ranging from a few coins to millions of dollars are a major factor in the maintenance of the American way of life. It is difficult to imagine the consequences if this source of support for the work of religious bodies, health and welfare agencies, and educational and research institutions were materially reduced. This case study, focused on Indianapolis, examines a critical mass fund-raising and giving program. Community chests in many communities evolved into the present-day United Way. In design, scope, and detail this study was without precedent when it was initially published in the 1950s. But "Community Chest "is more than an examination of local problems of fund raising. It also makes a decisive contribution to knowledge of philanthropic practice that is of general relevance to the social sciences. The book asks and seeks answers to the most ticklish issues of philanthropic fund raising: What may agencies expect in contributions from different social segments? How does one begin to estimate the need for philanthropic dollars in a given community? How can the public guard the interests of both ultimate recipients of assistance and donors? In short, what elements are crucial to success or failure in financing voluntary agencies, not merely in terms of money but with full regard for the needs and potentials of citizens and the community as a whole? Sociologists, welfare personnel, and professionals involved in financial development will find in this book an extraordinarv amount of material, both factual and interpretive, suggesting new approaches to the perplexing problems of community fund raising. A new introduction prepared by Carl Milofsky is a fascinating study of the tensions involved in the selection of the senior author, John R. Seeley, and of the critical response to this controversial study. This new material itself uniquely contributes to the sociology of knowledge.

Book Payment and philanthropy in British healthcare 1918 48

Download or read book Payment and philanthropy in British healthcare 1918 48 written by George Campbell Gosling and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book is available as an open access ebook under a CC-BY-NC-ND licence. At a time when payment is claiming a greater place than ever before within the NHS, this book provides the first in-depth investigation of the workings, scale and meaning of payment in British hospitals before the NHS. There were only three decades in British history when it was the norm for patients to pay the hospital; those between the end of the First World War and the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948. Payment played an important part in redefining rather than abandoning medical philanthropy, based on class divisions and the notion of financial contribution as a civic duty. With new insights on the scope of private medicine and the workings of the means test in the hospital, as well as the civic, consumer and charitable meanings associated with paying the hospital, Gosling offers a fresh perspective on healthcare before the NHS and welfare before the welfare state.
