Book The Fourteenth of September

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rita Dragonette has written a strong-hearted and authentic novel about a naive young girl and her struggle to reconcile the dissonance between the world she sees and the world she was raised to believe in. Judy is truly a quiet hero; you won’t forget her.” —Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean An enthralling historical novel set during the peak of the Vietnam War and told through the rare perspective of a young woman, who traces her path to self-discovery and a “Coming of Conscience.” Perfect for fans of Kate Quinn and Heather Morris. On September 14, 1969, Private First Class Judy Talton celebrates her nineteenth birthday by secretly joining the campus anti-Vietnam War movement. In doing so, she jeopardizes both the army scholarship that will secure her future and her relationship with her military family. But Judy’s doubts have escalated with the travesties of the war. Who is she if she stays in the army? What is she if she leaves? When the first date pulled in the Draft Lottery turns up as her birthday, she realizes that if she were a man, she’d have been Number One―off to Vietnam with an under-fire life expectancy of six seconds. The stakes become clear, propelling her toward a life-altering choice as fateful as that of any draftee. Judy’s story speaks to the poignant clash of young adulthood, early feminism, and war, offering an ageless inquiry into the domestic politics of protest when the world stops making sense.

Book excerpt: Set in a time when the sun is about to super nova and although the people of Earth feel they have plenty of time in celestial years there is very little time if the world is to be saved for posterity. Influenced by 3 young scientists the people of Earth device an initial plan to protect the planet from consistent and damaging elongated sun flares. While the plan they devise will not alone save the world it will buy time for technology to catch up with ideas and to overcome the squabbling of academics. The estimation is that it will take three extended generations to do so. The second generation devices the plan that together with Mars, Uranus and Titan one of Jupiters many moons, to involve the moving of planets and satellites. A very daring and dangerous plan in which the world could be prematurely destroyed. In this period the Solarians as they are now known come into contact with some very unsavoury aliens and war ensues with many expected results. The buck now passes to the third generation who get the responsibility of flying their massive star ship into space in search of lebensraum. The size of their mobile world, almost a solar system in its own right, intimidates different species and no matter what the Solarians do they can find no sympathy among the inhabited worlds. The Solarians are considered to be the most technologically advanced species in the universe but the Platyrrhines are possibly even more advanced in a different direction. The emphasis shifts from physical competitiveness to intellectual manipulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... an astonishing work of speculative non-fiction." - from the Foreword by John Robert Colombo "... a Grail tale to beat them all." - Mike Strobel, The Toronto Sun Swords at Sunset is Michael Bradley's bestselling non-fiction exploration of Holy Grail adventurers in North America from 1398 to 1571 (the author's research skills were also put to good use in the movie The Da Vinci Code). Bradley draws on evidence in The Book of Mormon and recently discovered artefacts from Lake Memphremagog and Niagara region to offer a convincing argument that communities of Grail refugees - who had fled the Inquisition in Europe - were established in Niagara and Vermont before being defeated by Native tribes in 1571. Swords at Sunset also examines the origins of man and the concept of the Holy Grail, offering a new and different perspective of the Western religious history that has shaped so much of the entire world's history. The book presents a thought-provoking interpretation that will astonish and intrigue.

"Apart from a brief return to the Foreign Office after the Prime Minister's retirement in 1955, he remained with Churchill - as adviser, amanuensis and assistant - until Churchill's death in January 1965. He served as companion on the official foreign visits and the holidays with Max Beaverbrook and Aristotle Onassis, helped with the great literary works, and became his closest intimate as well as speech-writer and spokesman in Churchill's last decade." As a young man Anthony Montague Browne fought in the Second World War as a pilot with distinction and was awarded the DFC, and after 1965 he served in the Royal Household." Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A delightful sampler plate of our national parks, written with charisma and erudition.”—Nick Offerman, author of Paddle Your Own Canoe From CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Conor Knighton, a behind-the-scenery look at his year traveling to each of America's National Parks, discovering the most beautiful places and most interesting people our country has to offer NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY OUTSIDE When Conor Knighton set off to explore America's "best idea," he worried the whole thing could end up being his worst idea. A broken engagement and a broken heart had left him longing for a change of scenery, but the plan he'd cooked up in response had gone a bit overboard in that department: Over the course of a single year, Knighton would visit every national park in the country, from Acadia to Zion. In Leave Only Footprints, Knighton shares informative and entertaining dispatches from what turned out to be the road trip of a lifetime. Whether he's waking up early for a naked scrub in a historic bathhouse in Arkansas or staying up late to stargaze along our loneliest highway in Nevada, Knighton weaves together the type of stories you're not likely to find in any guidebook. Through his unique lens, America the Beautiful becomes America the Captivating, the Hilarious, and the Inspiring. Along the way, he identifies the threads that tie these wildly different places together—and that tie us to nature—and reveals how his trip ended up changing his views on everything from God and love to politics and technology. Filled with fascinating tidbits about our parks' past and reflections on their fragile future, this book is both a celebration of and a passionate case for the natural wonders that all Americans share.
