Book Implementation of the Final Rule on Work Zone Safety and Mobility

Download or read book Implementation of the Final Rule on Work Zone Safety and Mobility written by Tom McDonald and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Highway Administration published the final rule updating 23 CFR 630 Subpart J in September 2004. The revised rule requires agencies using federal funding to address both safety and mobility in planning and construction of roadway improvements. The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) requested the assistance of the Center for Transportation and Research in developing guidance for a policy and procedures to comply with the final rule. This report describes an in-depth examination of current Iowa DOT project development processes for all types of improvements, including maintenance, as well as a detailed characterization of work zone impact considerations throughout project completion. To comply with both the letter and perceived intent of the final rule on safety and mobility, the report features a suggested work zone policy statement and suggested revisions in the Iowa DOT project development processes, including a definition of the key element: significant projects.

Book Guidelines for Developing Transportation Management Plans in Virginia

Download or read book Guidelines for Developing Transportation Management Plans in Virginia written by Benjamin H. Cottrell and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transportation management plan (TMP) is a comprehensive program of traffic control, communication, operation, and demand management strategies designed to maintain acceptable levels of traffic flow in work zones. A systematic procedure and/or checklist is needed for developing plans to lessen the impact of construction projects that restore or improve highways. The purpose of this research was to establish guidelines for developing TMPs for construction projects. Three questions were addressed by the guidelines: When should a TMP be developed? How should a TMP be developed? What should be in a TMP? The Federal Highway Administration published the Final Rule on Work Zone Safety and Mobility on September 9, 2004. It facilitates the comprehensive consideration of the broader safety and mobility impacts of work zones across project development stages and the adoption of additional strategies including TMPs that help manage these impacts during project implementation. Guidelines for TMPs were derived from a draft implementation guide for the final rule with minor revisions. TMPs may consist of up to three components: (1) a temporary traffic control plan that describes traffic control measures used to facilitate road users through a work zone; (2) transportation operations strategies that will be used to ease work zone impacts; and (3) public information strategies to inform those affected by the project of the expected work zone impacts and changing conditions. At a minimum, each TMP should have a temporary traffic control plan. It is recommended that the Virginia Department of Transportation implement the guidelines developed in this study.

This book was released on 2018-11-14 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards - Rear Visibility (US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Regulation) (NHTSA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards - Rear Visibility (US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Regulation) (NHTSA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 To reduce the risk of devastating backover crashes involving vulnerable populations (including very young children) and to satisfy the mandate of the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act of 2007, NHTSA is issuing this final rule to expand the required field of view for all passenger cars, trucks, multipurpose passenger vehicles, buses, and low-speed vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of less than 10,000 pounds. The agency anticipates that today's final rule will significantly reduce backover crashes involving children, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and other pedestrians who currently have the highest risk associated with backover crashes. Specifically, today's final rule specifies an area behind the vehicle which must be visible to the driver when the vehicle is placed into reverse and other related performance requirements. The agency anticipates that, in the near term, vehicle manufacturers will use rearview video systems and in-vehicle visual displays to meet the requirements of this final rule. This book contains: - The complete text of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards - Rear Visibility (US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Regulation) (NHTSA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section

(iii) If providing accessibility in conformance with this section to individuals with certain disabilities (e.g., those who use wheelchairs) would be structurally impracticable, accessibility shall nonetheless be ensured to persons with other types of disabilities, (e.g., those who use crutches or who have sight, hearing, or mental impairments) in accordance with this section.
