This book was released on 1985 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS PAPER DEMOSNTRATES A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO STUDY THE FAILURE BEHAVIOR OF COMPUTER SYSTEMS. Particular attentions is devoted to the analysis fo permament failures. a number of important techniques which have general applicability in both failure and workload analysis are brought togehter in this presentation. These include smeared averaging of the workload data, clustering of like fialures, match merging and joint analysis of workload and failures of workload. Approximately 17% of all fialures affecting the CPU were established to be permenent. The manifestation of a permanent failure was found to be strongly correlated with the level and type of workload rpior to the failure. Athough, in stict terms, the results only relate to the mainfestation of permement fialures and not the otheir occurrence, there are strong indication that permanent failures are both caused and discovered by increased activity. More measurements and experiments are necessary to determinethair respctive contributions to the workload/failure relationship. Caution should be exercised in direclty extrapolating the absolute numbers obtained here to other non-similar systems. Such extrapolation na be considered valid only if supported by a similar anlaysis of data. Keywords: Fault tolerant computing; Central processing units.

Book The Measurement and Statistical Modeling of Computer Reliability as Affected by System Activity

This book was released on 1985 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the research performed during a three year study of computer reliability as affected by system activity. Data collected over an eight year period on three generations of computers was analyzed to determine what relationships exist between failures and activity. The activity included type of utilization, as well as amount of activity (or load) on the computer at time of failure. The failures included both software and hardware (transient, intermittent, and permanent). Another aspect of the research was an evaluation of the fault tolerance provided by the computer system as indicated by software error detection and recovery rates. A third major area of research was the development of a methodology for analysis of failure prediction data. Keywords: Reliability Modeling; Failure/Load Relationship; Failure Prediction; Fault Tolerance; Computer Utilization Rates; Error Detection; Error Correction.

This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high percentage of defense systems fail to meet their reliability requirements. This is a serious problem for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), as well as the nation. Those systems are not only less likely to successfully carry out their intended missions, but they also could endanger the lives of the operators. Furthermore, reliability failures discovered after deployment can result in costly and strategic delays and the need for expensive redesign, which often limits the tactical situations in which the system can be used. Finally, systems that fail to meet their reliability requirements are much more likely to need additional scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and to need more spare parts and possibly replacement systems, all of which can substantially increase the life-cycle costs of a system. Beginning in 2008, DOD undertook a concerted effort to raise the priority of reliability through greater use of design for reliability techniques, reliability growth testing, and formal reliability growth modeling, by both the contractors and DOD units. To this end, handbooks, guidances, and formal memoranda were revised or newly issued to reduce the frequency of reliability deficiencies for defense systems in operational testing and the effects of those deficiencies. "Reliability Growth" evaluates these recent changes and, more generally, assesses how current DOD principles and practices could be modified to increase the likelihood that defense systems will satisfy their reliability requirements. This report examines changes to the reliability requirements for proposed systems; defines modern design and testing for reliability; discusses the contractor's role in reliability testing; and summarizes the current state of formal reliability growth modeling. The recommendations of "Reliability Growth" will improve the reliability of defense systems and protect the health of the valuable personnel who operate them.

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.
